Description

Outlander eat your heart out. This magnificent 400 year old Highland Castle is steeped in stories of romance and revenge

Once through the gates of the 200 acre policy of mixed woodlands, the drive sweeps through the grounds, over the “lover’s bridge” and up to the front of this impressive fortress. The original castle was built in 1607, with later additions in the 18th century, which has belonged to the same family continuously since inception. It is a unique looking castle structure, with a tall imposing 5-storey central double-tower, with two projecting wings.

Today the castle is available on a self-catering basis for exclusive use for up to 12 people. Traditionally decorated with period furniture and antiques throughout, there is a wonderful blend of family history and uniqueness in style. All the bedrooms are individual in character and have their own allocated bathrooms. The grounds include a croquet lawn, a decorative pond and interesting walks within the enclosed policy. A housekeeper lives in a separate wing of the castle and looks after the house and grounds on a daily basis, discreetly going about her business on behalf of the house.

  • Reception Rooms

On the first floor is a large grand drawing room with panelled ceiling and open fire, comfortable sofas and additional seating, with large picture windows overlooking the lawn to the rear. This is a wonderful room to entertain in style, whatever the occasion. The ante drawing room adjoins this room, which is accessed by massive wooden panelled doors. Beyond is the Queens room which is a secondary sitting room with TV.

    Kitchen & Dining

The small dining room is to be found on the first floor beyond the drawing room and is a small elegant room, which can seat up to 10 people in comfort. There is also a larger dining room on the ground floor with a table that seats 28 people. Next to the small dining room on the first floor is a small butlers pantry with a dumb waiter to bring food to the table. This is because the vaulted kitchen is on the ground floor below the dining room and the dumb waiter is the quickest means of transfer.

The kitchen is fully equipped and has a gas range with 5 hobs and double oven. This is a simply furnished room with traditional whitewash and arched ceiling. A long table can seat up to 12 people for more informal meals. A larder is next door for further storage of foodstuffs and cooking equipment.

    Catering
The owners can help you source a private chef to cater for a meal/meals during your stay.  Dates are fundamental to be able to confirm the service (cost according to chef, number of meals and menu etc).

  • Accommodation is provided for a group of up to 12 guests in 6 bedrooms with 3 bathrooms and 3 shower rooms, as follows:

    • 1 Twin Bedroom/s With Private Bathroom

  • Set within 200 acres of enclosed grounds, including a lawn to the front and rear, there is plenty of parking for your group at the front of the castle. There is a burn (stream) and pond in the grounds where parents of small children will need to be vigilant and keep them under supervision at all times.

Access in and out is by a separate driveway, whilst another driveway services the cluster of cottages that is just out of sight. Located 38 miles north of Aberdeen (approx 1hr 20 mins drive), near Turriff, where there is a supermarket and plenty of other facilities available.

Golf courses can be found locally or further afield at Cruden Bay, Trump International or Royal Aberdeen. The nearest distillery is Glendronach distillery. Access to beaches and the Moray Firth is within 12 miles.

I organised a driving holiday round Scotland for my Father’s 75th Birthday. To round off our trip I organised a nights stay in Craigston Castle. From the first contact with the property manager I was made to feel welcome and none of my many requests were too difficult. Elisabetta helped me organise a stunning Black tie dinner catered by the Fife arms and an archery competition in the grounds of the castle. Rounding off a fine evening with a whiskey in the grand drawing room the whole event was truly special and memorable. The Castle is simply stunning. Makes sure to request a trip to the roof to see the views. It’s obviously ancient but still manages to be warm, homely and comforting. I could not recommend a stay here more highly.

Delighted we were able to recommend this 'one night' stay for your father's milestone birthday. Sounds like it was a memorable trip and a night worth remembering! If you're ever you're in need of help finding somewhere suitable to stay for your next trip, we'd be only too happy to help!

We stayed in this castle at the end of August in a small group of six with two children. We had an excellent time and we only regret not having enough time to visit and do all the different activities in the surrounding area. Elisabetta was very efficient to organize a day at the farm while we were busy playing Golf in the magnificent course near the castle. We really enjoyed that time and we will be back soon.

Outstanding holiday castle rental with exceptional service from Elisabetta at the castle who went out of her way to ensure we were well looked after. When we mentioned that several people in our group played the piano she even went so far as to ensure the lovely grand piano in the drawing room was tuned just before we arrived, especially for our visit. Staying at the castle with its rich heritage and history was a rare privilege for us and worth every penny. We couldn't have wished for a more memorable and inspiring holiday.

Very simple and straightforward to book, with good communication beforehand and swift return of deposit following our departure.

From the moment you enter the Castle you are transported back in time and greeted by the lovely Elisabetta who made us feel like castle owners for a weekend. We rented the Castle for a group of 10 friends that wanted to experience the Scottish atmosphere and traditional activities but got much more than we bargained for. The lovely surroundings of the castle are perfect for jogging and exploration and the local pub is full of stories. Here you will find something for everyone and it is the perfect getaway. We are truly indebted to William for opening up this house for others, Elisabetta’s hospitality and of course to the chef, Nelson, who made our stay most welcome and we certainly look forward to returning again in the not too distant future.

We hired the Castle for a long weekend with a group of seven ladies and had an absolutely wonderful time from start to finish. Everything was just perfect. From Betta’s warm and attentive hospitality, to the incredible rooms and very comfortable bathrooms, to the fully equipped kitchen, to the endless activities that we spent our days exploring. We tasted whiskies, visited a great nearby distillery, lounged about in front of the fire and had lots of delicious dinners. I couldn’t recommend it more, we’re already planning to go back again soon! A unique place, very fascinating and with a warm atmosphere. Beautiful furniture design, very gentle welcome, friendly family management that makes you feel at home. The castle is within a wonderful territory, wild and with a lot of nice animals: deer, sheep and cows. The surroundings are very nice, with many villages by the sea and other castles to visit. I suggest you make your next relaxing vacation there!

We selected this Castle to celebrate our 50th Anniversary with our children and grandchildren. I cannot imagine a better selection. From the moment we saw the castle, through the trees, on our arrival we knew our stay would be memorable. Barbara and Betta met us at the front door and gave us the grand tour and history of the castle. Their responsiveness to our needs and requests was amazing and enhanced our stay. Whether playing hide and seek in the castle or exploring the trails and meadows in the surrounding forrest there was no need for electronic entertainment, much to our grandchildren’s surprise. The castle is perfectly located for exploring the Northeastern Highlands and coast. However, we opted to spend most of our time at the Castle. Truly , a once in a lifetime experience.”

August at this Castle was amazing. We stayed for a week and soaked in the Scottish hospitality and warmth. The castle was well equipped for our large 12 person group, and we fitted in just perfectly. We had such a grand time playing games and singing around the piano at night and traveling the countryside during the day. The historic decor and feel of the place was like stepping into an episode of Outlander. Amazing art, carved doorways, stone windy stairs going up up up… my friends and I could not have asked for more. Great getaway from the burdens of life. Truly a magical place. Thank you so much for letting us stay.

Visiting the castle with a party of 10 colleagues from Sweden, we enjoyed the lovely atmosphere and wonderful hospitality of our hosts. We stayed at the castle for a week in total, some for the total stay and others for just parts of the week. The generous amount of flexibility and hospitality was out of this world! Nothing was impossible, and our hosts were always there for us whenever we needed anything or had any questions what so ever! The grounds were lush and perfect for jogging. It was wonderfully peaceful and quiet, with one of us spotting no less than 30 different breeds of birds during a morning stroll. The Castle was tidy and clean, the facilities were in perfect order, the kitchen was impeccably maintained and fully functioning. In short: Everything we needed was within reach! We warmly recommend anyone considering a getaway to the Highlands or planning a conference for the office team to choose the castle, as it is idyllic, both from location and facility point of view! Thank You so much”

The castle was impressive. It was comfortable and warm. Bathrooms were very good and linen and towels were excellent. The owners were very helpful, kind and interesting. Facilities were good although the TV was small (never used by us). Kitchen facilities were excellent and there were extra linen, blankets and pillows. The reason for only 4 stars was the lack of complete privacy. The owners came and went in some parts of the let part. They were very nice but coming into let areas without warning also extended to their visitors coming in through front door and into what I had assumed was our private areas. I think there needs to be a clear delineation between the let parts and the retained part of the castle with the visitors of the owners also recognising the letting. For instance, visitors arrived coming through front door and into the main living areas when some of our party were still in night clothes relaxing. I appreciated the changing of flowers and taking away rubbish but a balance needs to be reached

Many thanks for your review, any comments are helpful to provide improvements where possible. We are currently reviewing your feedback to improve the access situation as suggested.

The castle is located in one of the most the most beautiful country sides we have ever experienced. To be a part of their journey, restoration and preservation was priceless. Our family dinners sitting, around the farm table in the kitchen are what life is all about.
