Description

Outlander eat your heart out. This magnificent 400 year old Highland Castle is steeped in stories of romance and revenge

Once through the gates of the 200 acre policy of mixed woodlands, the drive sweeps through the grounds, over the “lover’s bridge” and up to the front of this impressive fortress. The original castle was built in 1607, with later additions in the 18th century, which has belonged to the same family continuously since inception. It is a unique looking castle structure, with a tall imposing 5-storey central double-tower, with two projecting wings.

Today the castle is available on a self-catering basis for exclusive use for up to 12 people. Traditionally decorated with period furniture and antiques throughout, there is a wonderful blend of family history and uniqueness in style. All the bedrooms are individual in character and have their own allocated bathrooms. The grounds include a croquet lawn, a decorative pond and interesting walks within the enclosed policy. A housekeeper lives in a separate wing of the castle and looks after the house and grounds on a daily basis, discreetly going about her business on behalf of the house.

  • Reception Rooms

On the first floor is a large grand drawing room with panelled ceiling and open fire, comfortable sofas and additional seating, with large picture windows overlooking the lawn to the rear. This is a wonderful room to entertain in style, whatever the occasion. The ante drawing room adjoins this room, which is accessed by massive wooden panelled doors. Beyond is the Queens room which is a secondary sitting room with TV.

    Kitchen & Dining

The small dining room is to be found on the first floor beyond the drawing room and is a small elegant room, which can seat up to 10 people in comfort. There is also a larger dining room on the ground floor with a table that seats 28 people. Next to the small dining room on the first floor is a small butlers pantry with a dumb waiter to bring food to the table. This is because the vaulted kitchen is on the ground floor below the dining room and the dumb waiter is the quickest means of transfer.

The kitchen is fully equipped and has a gas range with 5 hobs and double oven. This is a simply furnished room with traditional whitewash and arched ceiling. A long table can seat up to 12 people for more informal meals. A larder is next door for further storage of foodstuffs and cooking equipment.

    Catering
The owners can help you source a private chef to cater for a meal/meals during your stay.  Dates are fundamental to be able to confirm the service (cost according to chef, number of meals and menu etc).

  • Accommodation is provided for a group of up to 12 guests in 6 bedrooms with 3 bathrooms and 3 shower rooms, as follows:

  • Set within 200 acres of enclosed grounds, including a lawn to the front and rear, there is plenty of parking for your group at the front of the castle. There is a burn (stream) and pond in the grounds where parents of small children will need to be vigilant and keep them under supervision at all times.

Access in and out is by a separate driveway, whilst another driveway services the cluster of cottages that is just out of sight. Located 38 miles north of Aberdeen (approx 1hr 20 mins drive), near Turriff, where there is a supermarket and plenty of other facilities available.

Golf courses can be found locally or further afield at Cruden Bay, Trump International or Royal Aberdeen. The nearest distillery is Glendronach distillery. Access to beaches and the Moray Firth is within 12 miles.

The castle was impressive. It was comfortable and warm. Bathrooms were very good and linen and towels were excellent. The owners were very helpful, kind and interesting. Facilities were good although the TV was small (never used by us). Kitchen facilities were excellent and there were extra linen, blankets and pillows. The reason for only 4 stars was the lack of complete privacy. The owners came and went in some parts of the let part. They were very nice but coming into let areas without warning also extended to their visitors coming in through front door and into what I had assumed was our private areas. I think there needs to be a clear delineation between the let parts and the retained part of the castle with the visitors of the owners also recognising the letting. For instance, visitors arrived coming through front door and into the main living areas when some of our party were still in night clothes relaxing. I appreciated the changing of flowers and taking away rubbish but a balance needs to be reached

Many thanks for your review, any comments are helpful to provide improvements where possible. We are currently reviewing your feedback to improve the access situation as suggested.

The castle is located in one of the most the most beautiful country sides we have ever experienced. To be a part of their journey, restoration and preservation was priceless. Our family dinners sitting, around the farm table in the kitchen are what life is all about.

Sounds like you had the perfect holiday at this impressive castle, enjoying the property and groupds! With some memories to share around dinner no doubt .. we do hope you may wish to return sometime!
