Description

With a heated indoor swimming pool, a games room and some of the most outstanding scenic views of Scotland from the front door, this could be your perfect holiday house.

This west facing former dower house, set above a private bay on the east side of Loch Fyne, enjoys stunning views across to the Mull of Kintyre and Arran beyond. It is located a few miles along a private road in a secluded part of what is known as “Argyll’s secret coast” and makes an ideal venue for a Scottish getaway with family and friends. In WWII the house was used as a base for the Norwegian commandos who went on the 'Heroes of Telemark' raid, which was one of the most successful acts of sabotage in the whole war.

This is a holiday house that has tripled in size over the years and has been designed specifically for your enjoyment, with the inclusion of an indoor swimming pool and a games room. Even the large drawing room has larger picture windows so you can enjoy the views across the loch in maximum comfort. The kitchen is well equipped and the spacious dining room can seat up to 16 people in comfort and style. The bedrooms are a good mix of double, twin and triple rooms, making them ideal for a family group.

Set in a beautiful location in 50 acres of grounds the sloped lawns lead down to the bay in front of the house. Access to the beach could not be easier for children out with their bucket and spades or those seeking shells. For more activity minded, there is a motor boat moored in the bay for guests’ exclusive use, subject to conditions (see below) or it is possible to bring your own boat to use from the jetty. However you wish to enjoy your break here, this is a superb venue for those wishing a family holiday in a beautiful coastal location.

If you want to have a truly relaxing holiday, where time both flies and stands still in this unspoilt, unfettered pocket of Scotland - you'll have come to the right place!

The very large sitting room is located at the front of the house and the two bay windows offer stunning views across Loch Fyne, With a wood-burning stove and comfortable seating at one end and a TV with further seating, this is a room that you can spread out in or be as one.

A door leads through to the front facing games room, which houses a pool table and a table tennis table. Access from here can be out to the decking area or through to the indoor swimming pool next door. Here there is a 30ft by 15ft heated pool, with sun loungers, a sauna and a shower, with further access to the decking area. Additionally, there is a cloakroom, which is perfect for storing all your outdoor footwear and where you can find life-jackets for trips out on the boat. Pet friendly with two dogs allowed.

    Kitchen & Dining

The dining room is a light airy spacious room, next door to the kitchen, with a long table that seats a maximum of 16 people. Gathering the group in one place for all the meals could not be easier, and there are two high chairs available for younger children. There is excellent light coming in as the larger west facing windows look past the games room across to the sea view.

Direct access takes you to the well-equipped modernised kitchen with work-island. Cooking is all electric, with 5 hobs, 3 ovens with a grill and a microwave oven, as well as 2 dishwashers. A utility room is next door with washing machine, tumble dryer and chest freezer. In the summer months, dining can take place outside at the various tables.

  • Set within private grounds, access is via a long 3-mile (seems longer) single track drive which terminates at this house.

Your journey to the property will take you down an unsealed track. The final stretch of the road belonging to the owner has been sealed with tarmac for ease of access. The track leading down to this section belongs to the surrounding estate and is continuously monitored and repaired.

Standard vehicles driven with care and common sense can easily navigate the track, albeit slowly. This may mean not always driving centrally down the road but directing your vehicle left or right as you come across a change of contour in the central reservation. Cars ranging from BMW’s to Mini’s have managed to drive to and from the House & Lodge without issue. We do not recommend low slung sports vehicles or cars with similarly low suspensions try navigating the track given the changing contours of the road.

    Location

It is positioned to the South of the Cowal peninsula between Kinfinan and Tighnabruaich, as part of “Argyll’s secret coast”. Surrounded by a rocky outcrop with mixed woodlands and heather, there is a sloped lawn that leads down to a small bay, which consists of pebble and sand.

    Day Trips

This is an excellent location for day trips, with a ferry service to East Loch Tarbert available locally. Golf is available in Tighnabruaich.  Alternatively you could enjoy a trip the Isle of Bute and do a House and Garden Tour at Mount Stuart. The trip takes about an hour and 15 minutes which includes the ferry crossing.

Want a spin on the boat?

A motor boat is available to your group, with one tank of fuel provided, as part of the booking – on provision of an RYA level 2 powerboat (coastal) qualification or higher. All certificates need to be checked in advance and brought on holiday. If you wish to arrive by boat or bring your own boat, that is possible, but please check in advance to confirm.

    Will we be bored?

If you're worried about it being isolated, think again. Once most guests get down to the property they don't want to leave.  There's so much to keep you occupied, a week will whizz by.  You've got walking, the beach, fishing, boat excursions, the indoor swimming pool, a games room, a huge garden and day trips to places like the Isle of Bute and Tarbert. You can also use the Visitcowal website and download a map on the touring routes around the quiet roads of this beautiful peninsular or check out their events page for things to see and do.

Where can we shop & eat?

There's an excellent village store 20 minutes away (Kames Village Store) run by an extremely accommodating proprietor called Andy.  He can pre-order groceries and dry goods and arrange a click and collect style service.  The meat, veg & fish will all be locally sourced.  The local butcher delivers to the village on a Friday and there's also a local fish monger.  On prior arrangement, the caretaker will be happy to collect and unpack provisions prior to your arrival.  Best to have a chat with her first so she can give you an idea of collection & delivery times.

In addition to this a local restaurant (Botanica Restaurant & Rooms) can provide pre-cooked tray-bakes or help with catering one or more meals, so in-house fine dining can be made possible!  Or how about booking a table and dining out - the restaurant is in nearby Tighnabruaich.

If you want to have a truly relaxing holiday, where time both flies and stands still in this unspoilt, unfettered pocket of Scotland - you'll have come to the right place!

Propert as expected. Very poor private road to property, not really suitable for any vehicle bar 4x4

Glad to hear you had a nice time. I agree about the drive. It's why we've always mentioned it may not be suitable for low slung vehicles in the Grounds & Surrounds section of our web description. However it would be helpful to know where else we might mention the drive so it doesn't get missed.

Got answers to all our questions.

Glad to hear we were able to answer all your questions. We try our best to be as helpful as possible in the decision making process.

A beautiful house, fabulous views, peaceful, tranquil and very comfortable. Pool was gorgeous, house was well kept and well stocked for large groups. We had a wonderful stay.

We think this is one of the West Coast's best-kept secrets! Glad to hear you had a great time. Please don't forget to ask about our Loyalty Discount next time you'd like to book a holiday with us.

Pleasant welcome from those who answered enquiries, a helpful and efficient service

Great to hear, thank you!

The house is a great escape being on a remote loch side location with lawn running down to the water front. The house inside feels much grander than the photo impression of a small dormer bungalow. The children loved the pool and was great for the adults for a morning swim. The pool is about 30ft long and about 4ft to 8ft deep. The pool shower lights up with blue LED's. You feel that you have your own holiday complex. The only issue is the 3 mile drive is quite rough. We managed with a Mazda 3 with a couple of scrapes. At least is keeps out people just having a snoop around!

The new caretakers are friendly and helpful and live about 100m from the property. The owner also greeted us on our arrival. The caretaker Andy took our children out on the boat to see seals and to go fishing, which the children really loved. If your party desires complete isolation from other people this property may not be for you.

If we were to go again we would get a certificate so we could use the boat. This would have transformed the whole holiday as it would have given us much more freedom to explore the area including going across to Tarbet to go shopping, site seeing and go to reasturants and bars with no need for a car.

Wow, sounds like you all had a great time at the house. It’s great to hear that the swimming pool was a big hit for all and what a lovely bonus that the caretaker was able to offer the boat trip for the children. I will certainly pass your comments on and we would be more than happy to help in the future if you wished to visit another stunning property, or return to this Lochside house with a boat certificate in hand – what a great idea!  Thank you once again for your feedback

The staff at Scotts Castle Holidays were always friendly and helpful and would reply to any queries quickly. Their web site is clear and easy to use with a good range of photos and details. The search facility is as good as most other holiday companies. The reason for losing a star is because Scotts had to get hold of the owner to confirm the booking when it should have been instant.

Thank you for all of your comments, so glad to hear you found everything to your liking. As all of our properties multi list we do need to reconfirm with the owners before proceeding and usually this is received within 24 hours however I understand that on this occasion the house manager was away when you enquired, but glad that we could hold your dates over the weekend until the diary was confirmed on Monday for you.  If we can temp you back in the future just let us know. Oh and don’t forget - we offer a loyalty discount to our Scotts guests. T&Cs apply
