Ilfracombe Museum is filled with items of natural history as well as cultural relics, the Chapel of St Nicholas is worth paying a visit to and the little ones will love wandering around the aquarium and observing the marine life. Ilfracombe is a great base from which to explore the North Devon coastline; follow the South West Coast Path in a westerly direction and pass a collection of small bays and the 19th Century Bull Point Lighthouse, before reaching Woolacombe and its stunning sandy beach, surrounded by rugged cliffs and dunes and excellent for surfing those large Atlantic waves, while heading east from Ilfracombe will lead you to Combe Martin, a charming village on the edge of the Exmoor National Park with excellent hiking trails, beaches and a fascinating dinosaur museum. Head further into the national park and visit Dunster Castle, a former motte and bailey castle on top a steep hill that has more than 1000 years of history, the idyllic dry valley of The Valley of Rocks, where you can see goats roaming and glorious panoramic coastal views, and for more excellent coastal views, take a trip on the Lynton & Lynmouth Cliff Railway, a water-powered funicular railway that joins the towns of Lynton and Lynmouth and at the top, enjoy a cream tea at the Grade II listed Cliff Top café.
