Description

The Property is a rare find amongst Lakeland holiday properties and is without doubt one of the most elegant period properties available in the area. A rare example of the Art Deco design of the 1930’s The Property is still offering a real wow factor today. The moment you step inside you will immediately feel like you are on an Agatha Christie film set, a theme which continues throughout the house. With stunning views from all the principal rooms, the position is one of the most beautiful in the Lake District and now having been lovingly restored by the current owners it is a great choice for special occasions and extended family holidays offering superb accommodation in breathtaking surroundings.

The living accommodation comprises of bright and extremely spacious living room welcoming log burning stove and large screen TV, a family friendly, elegant, open plan kitchen diner and a cosy snug offers a place to retreat with a good book. The unique curved staircase rises to the first floor where there is a choice of six bedrooms, three with en-suite facilities, one with private patio and one with feature bath. The bedrooms are complemented by further bathroom and additional shower room. A large terrace wraps around the front of the house and from here the mature gardens slope away with the shrubs and trees beautifully framing the view

The excellent location on the slopes below Skiddaw offers great access to the stunning scenery of the north western Lake District with Derwent Water, Lake Bassenthwaite Lake and Ullswater all within easy reach and offering a myriad of walks of all levels from the door of the house, mountain biking, and watersports. Keswick, with its award winning, twice weekly market is just a five minute drive from the house and this lovely town offers a great choice of restaurants, cosy pubs and local shops.

Accommodation in detail

The Property is a very imposing property however the property does not reveal itself until you have parked on the drive and walk round to the front of the house, pausing to take in the beautiful view. The front door opens to an imposing hall way with an impressive curved staircase leading to the first floor bedrooms, and a hallway running through the ground floor linking the social space.

The large sitting room is bright and airy, with the lovely views perfectly framed by the Art Deco Crittall windows, that are used through out the house. Beautifully furnished to reflect the period design of the house with a mixture of paintings, antique and modern pieces, comfortable sofas and armchairs are arranged to benefit from the views but also allow guests to relax in front of the large screen TV and cosy log burning stove. The sitting room is complemented by a welcoming snug with additional TV and log burning stove and small library, which is a super retreat with a good book or the weekend papers. The large open plan kitchen diner, again benefiting from the spectacular views, places a contemporary twist on a traditional theme. The high quality fitted kitchen, with marble work tops and large breakfast bar incorporates both an Aga and modern appliances including five ring electric induction hob, electric double oven, American style fridge/freezer, separate wine fridge and dishwasher all of which are complemented by a high-quality kitchen inventory. The large dining table plays host to everything from family friendly breakfasts to special celebration dinners with family and friends. French doors open from here to the patio and garden and to the side a utility and laundry room is equipped with washing machine and tumble drier.

Reaching the first floor is an experience in itself as the elegant staircase curves upwards reflecting the beautiful architecture of the house. The landing links the six bedrooms, all of which benefit from expansive views across the valley. The rooms are all named in homage to Agatha Christie and her famous Belgian detective. Poirot can be presented with twin or superking size bed and incorporates an en-suite shower room. The path from the back garden provides access to Skiddaw and there are several less demanding paths to Latrigg, and Keswick is a 2 mile walk away by lovely country footpaths.

The nearby market town of Keswick is one of the Lake District’s most popular destinations. This friendly town hosts the very popular twice weekly market that has recently won the coveted “Best Outdoor Market” in the Great British Market Awards. Keswick also offers a fantastic array of shops offering everything from craft bakeries and local produce, antiques, crafts, outdoor clothing and much, much more.

If you are looking for somewhere to eat and drink, a week just won’t be long enough to sample the great range of pubs, restaurants, bistros, cafes and wine bars! Or try Cottage in the Wood, only 10 minutes drive, one of the Lake District’s best restaurants and recently awarded a Michelin star. For a great evening out why not visit the 100 year old Alhambra offering first class cinema entertainment in traditional surroundings or enjoy an evening at “the most beautiful and friendly theatre in Britain”, the 400 seat Theatre By The Lake on the shores of Derwentwater.

Enjoy a cruise on Derwentwater, walk onto the fells; - Cat Bells, Skiddaw, Coledale Horeshoe and Blencathra are all nearby; head underground at Honister Slate Mines or take the Via Ferrata challenge; enjoy mountain biking or follow the walking trails and Go Ape in Whinlatter Forest. For steam train enthusiasts there is the little train at Threlkeld Mining museum or the L’al Ratty which heads up into the hills from Ravenglass on the West Coast.

For day trips, Ullswater is a short drive away offering lake cruises, great walking and the beautiful Aira Force Waterfall and Buttermere and Crummock Water offer sublime scenery. Ashness Bridge and Surprise View, situated above the Borrowdale Valley, should not be missed and perhaps even a cup of tea and homemade cake in the unspoilt village of Watendlath. Shepherd’s Café at the foot of Shepherd’s Crag, a favourite venue for climbers, is a tearoom run on High Lodore farm serving delicious homemade lunches and teas, just 10 minutes walk from the launch jetty at Lodore and well worth a visit. For those interested in pampering, The Spa at Underscar is less than a mile away or the Spa at Armathwaite Hall is a 10 minute drive.
