Description

Relax in the intimacy of the home that meant so much to Sir Walter Scott and his descendants and enjoy all the essentials of modern day comfort as you unwind in this historical and country retreat. Sitting in over 100 acres of Estate land bordering the River Tweed, this was part of a multi-million pound refurbishment programme across the whole site. The Wing can accommodate 15 guests in 7 en-suite bedrooms, each individually styled with wonderful furnishing and fabrics. This is the ideal location for those looking for luxury accommodation situated 1 hour south of Edinburgh, in the beautiful Scottish Borders. We also accept 3 dogs free of charge (basement level only).

The public rooms include a lovely sitting room, a formal dining room featuring one of Scott’s most treasured views over the Tweed, a reading room and a billiard room. There is also a spacious, interior-designed kitchen with plenty of room for informal dining and a private enclosed courtyard. As part of the refurbishment, many of the original features have been retained, as well as some of the family’s belongings, including original artworks and furniture.

The Wing offers a unique opportunity to experience the splendour of the surroundings that proved such an inspiration to Scott throughout his long and illustrious career. Our aim is to offer visitors a real sense of what it would have felt like to be a valued guest in Scott’s own home and is an ideal gathering place for families, groups of friends or colleagues celebrating a special occasion. It is also the perfect destination for those simply looking to escape to the Scottish Borders in relaxed style.

  • The garden is compact, fragrant, colourful and detailed. It is contained within high walls, with the facades of the house setting a scene which could be straight out of one of Scott’s historical romances. You can look up to Scott’s ‘Juliette’ balcony sited at his bedroom window, see across to a ‘Rapunzel’ tower which overlooks the river, and explore the gothic staircase leading to the meadow beyond. Find Scott’s greenhouse based on a medieval jousting tent, and spot the heritage vegetables and fruit growing in the kitchen garden. Sit back and enjoy the heady scents of the herbaceous borders, or take a stroll to the river.

The woodland paths all have accessible paths, which are wheelchair friendly.

    What We Love ...

    - that it embraces the less mobile; providing a fully accessible bedroom suite and lift to all floors

    - the walled flower garden; it's such a beautiful environment to walk around and gather ones thoughts

    - the big bathrooms; one even has a roll top bath which, with a good book and glass of wine, is the ultimate holiday indulgence
