Edwardian Country House, Stranraer (486589LA)

Described as an Edwardian time capsule, and with limited Internet coverage or mobile phone signal, you can step back in time and digitally disconnect at this destination.

This traditional Edwardian lodge is to be found in an isolated, but accessible location on the moors of Galloway situated on a 7,000 acre estate. Surrounded by mature trees with an open outlook across the moors, this is a location where the house is the holiday. A comfortable family home where you take your friends, enjoy each other’s company, go for long walks and then all muck in when it comes to the cooking and dining, a true escape!

On offer is a large sitting room with piano and wood-burning stove, an elegant dining room and a large breakfasting kitchen. Additional spaces are available with a table tennis table and small pool table for indoor entertainment. The accommodation consists of 11 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms and 2 separate shower units, with five of the bedrooms enjoying views across the moors to the front. This is an ideal base for a family holiday or weekend away, in the heart of the Galloway hills.

Living Space

Reception rooms

The large sitting room with wood-burning stove and grand piano, can comfortably seat up to 16 people in tradtional splendour and style. The bay window overlooks the bridge and drive, with the other window with a front view. The TV is available to view in this room. Beyond the entrance hall is a larger hall with pantry area, which houses an antique pool table which has been a popular pastime over the years and well used. Likewise a smaller room also houses a table tennis table which will keep children further entertained. What was the old gun room is now a larger boot room, meaning that you can store all your hats, coats, boots and any other equipment you need on holiday in one space.

Kitchen / Dining

The dining room, with an open fire, is an elegant traditional room with two dining tables. The main table is normally set-up for 8/10 people with the smaller one for 6 people, though both can be combined to form one larger table for 16 people. The kitchen is located next door and is a large room housing a kitchen and a separate breakfasting room. Within the kitchen there is a traditional oil-fired Esse cooking appliance as well as a separate gas fired top with 4 hobs. The work-island allows for excellent working space for preparation and there is an additional larder and utility spaces for superb food storage, dry, refrigerated and frozen, that you would expect in a former shooting lodge, where everything has to be brought on arrival. The breakfast room houses a table and benches that can seat up to 10 people comfortably.

Stranraer is known as the gateway to the hills of Galloway and as a busy ferry port serving the South West of Scotland to Northern Ireland. The town is a busy place with lots of restaurants, hotels, pubs, local shops and supermarkets. There is also a museum and a castle in the centre of the town. Nearby Castle Kennedy gardens are an attraction as well as Logan Botanic gardens. The ruined Glenluce Abbey dates back to the 12th century and is open to the public during the tourist season. The Southern Upland Way travels through coast-to-coast from East to West and 212 miles long. The dark skies in Galloway Forest Park make this area excellent for studying the night sky.

Dumfries and Galloway

From shores to hills, Dumfries and Galloway is an area of magnificent landscapes, and natural beauty, and a paradise for walkers and cyclists, thanks to the rolling hills, and verdant forests. 200 miles of coastline offer beautiful beaches and seaside towns, and thanks to the Gulf Stream, a unique climate here, a perfect setting for a beach holiday.

Southern Scotland

Stretching across the border with England, and reaching up to the central belt from Glasgow to Edinburgh, the Southern Scotland region is a popular location for short break holidays. Although you may not find the monumental mountain ranges of the Highlands, don’t think that this region lacks the traditional Scottish landscapes. The famous 7Stanes mountain biking routes can be found across the Border counties and Dumfries and Galloway, as there is an abundance of hills, glens and forests to challenge even experienced bikers. The region has plenty of fishing opportunities too, most popular perhaps is the River Tweed, well known for its salmon, and miles of coastline, ideal for walking and bird spotting. Golf can be found in abundance in this area too. For gentler activities, visit the Four Borders Abbeys, magnificent tributes to the religious history of the area, at Kelso, Jedburgh, Dryburgh and Melrose.
