Living Space

Reception rooms

The reception area of this church conversion is accessed via the central glass stairway to a vast 54 foot by 34 foot open-plan living space. With the arched beams, flower roundel window and stained glass window juxtaposed with the modernity of a semi-glass floor and striking use of space, this is very much a “wow” room. There are four distinct areas within this large space on the first floor and they are the seating area, the games area, the dining area and the kitchen area. At the far end of the building, with a flat screen TV on the wall, there are a number of large comfortable sofas around a coffee table, with a wood-burning stove to the side, which makes up the living space area. To the side is a pool table. There is also access to an external balcony, where you can enjoy views over the local Borders countryside.

Kitchen / Dining

At the near end of this impressive first floor open-plan space is a well designed kitchen with granite work-tops and stainless steel throughout. There are six bar stools to the side where more informal dining or socialising can occur. The dining area is opposite which consists of an old oak refectory table with two pews on either side, and two oak chairs, which comfortable seats 10 people to a maximum of 12 people.

LocationKelso

The beautiful country town of Kelso is nestled in the Border countryside of Roxburghshire. Sat on the river Tweed, where it meets the Teviot, the town is surrounded by beautiful landscapes and scenery, and there is much to explore on foot or by bike. The ruins of Kelso Abbey lie in the town, a short distance from the river. Once the richest abbey in Scotland, the remains are still awe-inspiring! Floors Castle is home to the Duke and Duchess of Roxburghe, and exhibits some fine historic collections, fantastic gardens and grounds, and an exciting adventure playground for the kids! If you have a few minutes spare whilst visiting, take a turn around the beautiful War Memorial Gardens, the formal gardens are well maintained and a peaceful and tranquil place.

Roxburghshire

The Borders region of Scotland, offering spectacular sceneries and beautiful towns and villages, is the ideal destination for visitors. The historic county of Roxburghshire borders England to the south, and is a welcoming gateway to Scotland. The area is attractive to walkers and cyclists thanks to its sweeping hills and valley landscapes. With the rivers Tweed and Teviot running through the county, fishing is within easy reach, and the Tweed particularly is famed for its salmon. An excellent number of golf courses can be found in the area too.  The largest town, Hawick is renowned for its textile industry, in particular knitwear, and the town’s shopping centre is testament to this. For visitors in the months of May and June, the town is also the starting point of a fantastic celebration of local history, the Border Common Ridings celebrated across the towns of the Borders.  At Melrose, on the river Tweed, you can find Abbotsford, the ancestral home of Sir Walter Scott, a lasting monument of its owners life and achievements. Kelso, at the junction of the rivers Teviot and Tweed, also boasts its own abbey ruins, and set nearby is the magnificent Floors Castle, the largest inhabited castle in Scotland. Jedburgh, can be found just 10 miles from the English border, and its proximity to England has provided it with a rich history of national battles, and it too is home to a fascinating ruined abbey. For those looking for city life, then Edinburgh and all its attractions are only one hour away.

Scottish Borders

Popular as a short break destination, the Scottish Borders offer peace and tranquillity in the beautiful landscapes, and traditional towns and villages. Behind the scenes, the Borders tell of a turbulent history; there is much to learn of the Scottish wars from this area. Fishing, golf, walking and cycling can be found in abundance, so make sure you see the best of the region!

Southern Scotland

Stretching across the border with England, and reaching up to the central belt from Glasgow to Edinburgh, the Southern Scotland region is a popular location for short break holidays. Although you may not find the monumental mountain ranges of the Highlands, don’t think that this region lacks the traditional Scottish landscapes. The famous 7Stanes mountain biking routes can be found across the Border counties and Dumfries and Galloway, as there is an abundance of hills, glens and forests to challenge even experienced bikers. The region has plenty of fishing opportunities too, most popular perhaps is the River Tweed, well known for its salmon, and miles of coastline, ideal for walking and bird spotting. Golf can be found in abundance in this area too. For gentler activities, visit the Four Borders Abbeys, magnificent tributes to the religious history of the area, at Kelso, Jedburgh, Dryburgh and Melrose.

Beautiful conversion of an old church, with open plan living area upstairs, using the whole length and width of the building, and 5 double bedrooms downstairs, some with extra beds . Had worried the open space might be cold, but it wasn't at all. Kitchen very well stocked with pretty much everything you could possibly need. Owners live in vestry at the back of the church - very approachable and helpful. An amazing place to stay with a large group. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay.

We all had a lovely 3 night stay at Cairns House. Such a treat to stay in an old church full of character. The modern design was beautiful and cosy. There were 13 ladies for my Mum's 50th and the open plan living area was perfect for everyone getting to know each other a mix over good food and wine. The owner was on hand to contact for any questions we had. Could not fault this beautiful church for a fantastic stay!
