Ocean View Holiday House, near Turnberry (102)

Guests have been known to sit in this lovely house all day and just watch the magnificent view of Ailsa Craig, and the way it seems to change colour all the time.

This delightful country house enjoys great views across to the easily recognisable and distinctive Ailsa Craig and to the Atlantic Ocean beyond, with easy access to the nearby golden beaches and links golf courses of Ayrshire. This is a stylish large holiday home, only a short drive from Glasgow, which takes its inspiration from one of Scotland’s most famous artists in Charles Rennie Mackintosh, with high backed chairs and fine Scottish art throughout. Whilst the house was built in 1791, there is more of an Art Nouveau feel within, giving this holiday house a distinctive style. With an elegant drawing room with an open fire and dining room with wood-burning stove, there is also a well-equipped modern kitchen and games room. The bedrooms and bathrooms are on the two floors above, with each bedroom having a TV.

Set within 5 acres of grounds and with private access via a farm road, the grounds are private and there is plenty of parking for 6 vehicles. This popular country house is ideal for a family holiday or those wishing to base themselves within this popular golfing area. Turnberry is only a few miles away and is famed for hosting the British Open Golf Championship and a game played here when the wind blows is a challenge of any golfer. The local area, with its rugged terrain of hills and over sixty miles of sheltered coastline provides the perfect location for a family holiday.

Truly beautiful period house in a peaceful setting. Mark the host was charming and very helpful, making sure we had everything we needed. The house is very well equipped and all the rooms are clean, comfortable and the sculptures and furniture are amazing. Our party of 11 had a great family weekend celebrating a 70th birthday. The weather was warm so we made good use of the BBQ and outdoor chairs. Plenty of interesting places nearby. Culzean castle, Heads of Ayr Farm Park, and the Robbie Burns museum are all worth a visit. We all agreed it would be a lovely venue for a Christmas/New Year gathering with the cosy rooms and log burning fires.

We have just returned from celebrating my parents' 50th Wedding Anniversary. Our group ranged in age from 4 to 76.

The house itself is lovely. It comfortably sleeps 12 and the rooms are all large and spacious. The rooms at the front all have unobstructed views of Ailsa Craig so you can sit in the living room (or at the front of the house if the weather's nice) with great views of the rock and the sea. The house sits in 5 acres of grounds, so there was plenty of room to play tennis and football (sports equipment is provided in the house) as well as space for the kids to ride their bikes. When it's not so good, there's a snooker table and board games inside to keep everyone occupied.

The location is suberb. It sits about 2 miles from Turnberry (where the golf resort is located), a few more to GIrvan where there's a supermarket, beach and restaurants, less than 30 minutes from Alloway (Robert Burns' birthplace) and an hour from Glasgow. A car is a must for exploring the area, although there is a train station in Girvan.

The owner, Mark, was a fountain of knowledge about places to go and see. There wasn't a question that he couldn't answer, usually with multiple options. He met us at the property when we arrived and gave us a tour of the house and grounds.

Having such a large a varied group, we didn't struggle for things to do. When the weather was sunny, we walked to Dow Hill farm (about 25 minutes), visited Turnberry Lighthouse and spent an enjoyable afternoon at Girvan beach (which we didn't even know existed). On the one bad day of our break, we visited the Burns Birthplace and Discovery Centre in Alloway.

All in all, we had a great break in a lovely house located in a stunning setting. We now just need another excuse to go back and stay again!"

Beautiful house, stunning views!

We've just returned home from a week away and what a fantastic week we had! We were a group of 13 from children to grandparents. The house is absolutely beautiful - spacious rooms and a well stocked kitchen, and the pool room was a real bonus. I'd read about the views from the house but actually nothing can really prepare you for it, photos don't really do it justice. We were lucky with the weather and had several clear evenings and just sat out watching the sky change for hours.

Mark was very welcoming when we arrived and showed us around the house, including some of his amazing designs which are in the house - he also gave loads of tips for local places to visit. He was even very accommodating of our need to squeeze in an extra child and provided a bed for us.

The extensive grounds are immaculately kept and the kids spent hours outdoors playing badminton and rounders on the lawns. Dogs are allowed at the property and ours had a ball. A BBQ was also provided and we certainly made good use of it!

The beach is just a short drive from the house where you can park and walk down to Turnberry Lighthouse (there is a cafe there open to the public so you can have refreshments before walking back!).

If you love Scotland as much as we do, this place is a must - there's loads to do locally like the beaches and Calzean Castle and Park and within easy driving distance of places like Galloway Forrest and Isle of Arran.

And if you don't fancy going out, you can just stay at the house and enjoy the view

A very happy base for golfers, the village of Turnberry in Ayrshire is home to the iconic and famous Trump Turnberry Golf Resort. With a number of courses, including the Open Championship course, the resort offers luxury golf on its beautiful coastline setting. The beautiful coastal setting of the village offers a number of sites to explore, including the 19th Century Turnberry Lighthouse, built partially on the ruins of Turnberry Castle. The early history of the Castle is mostly unknown, but during its fractious past, it was home to the young Robert the Bruce. The granite island of Ailsa Craig provides lovely views and bird watching from pretty much anywhere along the coast.

Located on the west coast, Ayrshire offers a diversity of landscapes for the discerning traveller. The shores of the Firth of Clyde offer beaches and a range of watersports, and the rolling Galloway Hills to the south offer a haven for nature lovers and walkers. Ayrshire is historically a diverse industrial county, and most famous for its production of the worldwide favourite Scotch Whisky, Johnnie Walker, in the town of Kilmarnock. The namesake town of Ayr is a bustling seaside resort. With its long esplanade and sandy beach it is a popular tourist town. Further north along the coastline the town of Irvine is home to the main site of the Scottish Maritime Museum. Other places of interest in the county include the Ayr suburb of Alloway, birthplace of Scotland’s poet Robert Burns. Ayr Racecourse, which hosts the Scottish Grand National is a great day out. Turnberry Castle claims to be the possible birthplace of Robert the Bruce, and is an interesting historical attraction. Just a ferry trip across the Firth is the Isle of Arran. Boasting geologically diverse High and Lowlands the island has been inhabited since Neolithic times and has a range of attractions with mountain ranges, rolling countryside and sandy beaches, there is a range of things to do here. If you are a golfer, the area offers over 42 courses including three Open Championship links courses at Royal Troon, Prestwick and Turnberry.

Southern Scotland

Stretching across the border with England, and reaching up to the central belt from Glasgow to Edinburgh, the Southern Scotland region is a popular location for short break holidays. Although you may not find the monumental mountain ranges of the Highlands, don’t think that this region lacks the traditional Scottish landscapes. The famous 7Stanes mountain biking routes can be found across the Border counties and Dumfries and Galloway, as there is an abundance of hills, glens and forests to challenge even experienced bikers. The region has plenty of fishing opportunities too, most popular perhaps is the River Tweed, well known for its salmon, and miles of coastline, ideal for walking and bird spotting. Golf can be found in abundance in this area too. For gentler activities, visit the Four Borders Abbeys, magnificent tributes to the religious history of the area, at Kelso, Jedburgh, Dryburgh and Melrose.

Very nice property with a great view over the firth and of Ailsa Craig. There was plenty of room even for 11 of us helped by a dining room and a separate living room. My only criticism was there was sometimes a problem with a lack of hot water in some of the showers,

29th August 2016 Excellent

This property was excellent. The location was very good with views to Ailsa Craig and to the Campbeltown peninsular. There was plenty of space around the house with well tended but not precious gardens, the dogs were very happy with the grounds and with the walk to the beach. The accommodation on three split levels was very well appointed with good quality bedding and furnishings, The kitchen was well appointed and had ample cookware, tableware and glassware to cater for a party of twelve.
Girvan is a short car ride away, Ayr a very pleasant drive about 30mins, and there is a farm shop within easy walking distance. Highly recommended

Service rating : Many thanks for your feedback and we would be delighted to help with any future holiday plans.

This was a last minute booking for a family of 10 and we could not have wished for a more perfect stay. The house is wonderful and beautifully furnished. Our personal welcome by the owner was wonderful and a friendship that will be maintained in years to come. The beds are extremely comfortable, the kitchen very well equiped and the whole house very well appointed. The roaring fire commands that you sit beside it for quality family times with a glass of wine. Beautiful local walks and fresh air fill the day time and the local farmer is more than happy to stop and chat. A holiday experience that the whole family will never forget.
