Romantic Scottish Castle, in Aberdeenshire (219)

Voted one of the ten best castles in Britain by The Independent on Sunday, you won't want to miss the chance to stay at this unique destination.

In the centre of Banffshire, known for its Whisky Distilleries, Fishing, Castles and some of the most outstanding coastline in the world, you will find this charming castle located in 40 acres of grounds and gardens.

The interior of the 16th Century Castle is sympathetically furnished with an eclectic collection of art and antiques throughout. The previous Laird was an Art Dealer and his collection is very much part of what makes the Castle so special. The house is still the main family home, who move to a service wing when  guests are staying and are very happy to personally talk through the history of the Castle with anyone who may be interested.

There are plenty of reception rooms for guests to escape to, including the impressive Great Hall, with its distinctive Painted Ceiling, the Drawing Room, the Billiards Room, the Chapel and the Vaulted Dining Room.

There is an infinity pool for swimming and an external Pavilion that can be used for games on a wet day or for meetings, events or parties.

The Estate has its own fold of Highland Cows and a small muster of Peacocks.

Living Space

Reception rooms

On the reception floor are two large sitting rooms, the central reception room is the Great Hall with an open fire, panelling, medieval painted ceiling and three window seats looking out to the front Lawns and swimming pool. This is also where you will find the grand piano and there is enough room to dance a Scottish reel. There are sofas and comfy chairs arranged around the fire, and if you prefer to eat upstairs for any of your meals, we can arrange to have a table brought up.

The Drawing Room gets plenty of morning light through its Georgian windows, it also has a wood burning fire to keep to you warm in the evenings if you want to relax in front of the TV or enjoy some of the board games on offer.

The Library has an extensive collection of Art History Books and is used as a bedroom when there are 14 guests. When catering for fewer guests it can be reverted back to a Library.

On the Ground Floor is the Breakfast Room, large enough for your whole party to eat together, a Billiard Room with wood burning fire, Vaulted Dining Room (seating 6/8) and Chapel.

The Pavilion, a heated external games room is across the North Lawns and can be used for bigger parties, ceilidhs, ping pong and Yoga.

Kitchen / Dining

The Kitchen and Breakfast Room are located on ground level, next door to one another.

You’ll find the kitchen well equipped with a commercial electric hob and oven, dishwasher, freestanding freezer with ice maker, commercial fridge, panini maker, coffee maker, microwave, air fryer and bread maker.

The Breakfast room can seat up to sixteen people around a large refectory table.

Bedrooms & Bathrooms - Sleeps 14

There are seven bedrooms, five with en-suite facilities and two with private bathrooms.

Two bedrooms have four poster beds, one a double, the other emperor size. One has an ensuite bathroom wtih bath and walk in shower and the other has an ensuite shower room.

Three are two additional king size ensuites, one with a gilded Sleigh Bed, the other with a Brass bed. The other three rooms are twin bedrooms wtih two single beds in each.  One twin bedroom has an ensuite shower room, one has a private shower room and the other has a private bathroom. 

Six of the bedrooms can have T.V.s if requested. Most of the rooms are large enough to place an additional bed or cot if you are bringing children.

All bedrooms are above the ground floor, four are on the main reception floor and the three largest rooms are accessed by a medieval stone spiral staircase.

Grounds & Surrounds

The Castle sits in 40 acres of its own grounds and there are lawns to the front and the rear of the Castle, There is also a rose garden, a laburnham avenue, a rhododendron tunnel, a burn, a lochan, an orchard within a walled garden and ancient woodland to explore. The gardens are very sheltered and there is plenty of outdoor seating. Croquet and Badminton sets are available.

There is also a heated infinity pool.

Security Bond

The owner requires a fully refundable security bond to be paid within 7 days of the holiday start date.
This owner has chosen to use our secure online payment service to collect this bond from guests.

Check in / Check out

Guests are welcome to arrive from 4:00pm and are asked to depart by 10:00am on the day of departure.

Pets Welcome

A maximum of 2 pets are welcome at this property. Typically pet charges apply but please contact the office for details.

Cancellation Policy - Strict

Included in the rental

Linen, towels, electricity and central heating included within the rental. An initial supply of logs for the wood-burning stove is provided.

Notes & Warnings

COT & HIGHCHAIR
Whilst this property can supply a highchair. Please make sure you submit a note on your booking form to the bookings team requesting this item so the owner knows to put one out for you on arrival.

GROUP TYPES
Stag and Hen bookings may not book this property, unless discussed in advance for approval. Neither the Owner nor the Agent will accept any liability should a booking be confirmed as a consequence of non-disclosure of the above which may later result in a booking cancellation by the Owner. WEDDINGS
Please note that weddings need to be approved prior to booking as additional costs may apply.

PETS
Two dogs are welcome – restricted to the ground floor only, pet charges applicable, please advise the bookings team if you wish to take your pet.

Aberdeenshire, located on the north east of Scotland’s mainland, boasts a unique array of landscape and heritage.  The historic county of Banffshire on the north coast is now commonly considered to be part of Aberdeenshire. The many miles of easterly coastline offers rugged cliffs as well as sandy beaches and appeals to watersport enthusiasts. The inland westerly border incorporates the Cairngorm National Park, attracting walkers and explorers. The region is home the Lecht Ski Resort, and Glenshee Ski Resort, so really can cater for a massive range of sports! Investigation of the Castle Trail is a must – the trail takes in 17 of the best castles Aberdeenshire has to offer, including Balmoral Castle, seasonal home to the Royal Family. Aberdeen plays a part in the oil and gas industry forming a land base for the North Sea oil rigs, however don’t be deceived by what you may find here – the city has won the ‘Britain in Bloom’ award a record breaking 13 times, thanks to its incredible number of parks and gardens, and is home to a beautiful stretch of sandy beach. Its nickname the ‘Granite City’ is courtesy of its quarrying history, and the famous 'Granite Mile' (Union Street) is home to many shops. The traditional neighbouring towns of Banff and Macduff sit on either side of the River Deveron, a popular fishing river, and nearby you will find the magnificent Duff House. Other large towns in the area include Peterhead and Fraserburgh, both fishing towns on the north east coast, and the market town of Inverurie. 

Highlands and Islands

This region takes in Inverness-shire, Ross-shire, Sutherland, Caithness and the islands include the Inner and Outer Hebrides as well as Orkney and the Shetland islands. For spectacular scenery the Highlands of Scotland provides some of the best, with a huge expanse of area full of mountains, lochs and glens full of romance, wildlife and scenic beauty. The heritage of this area includes Culloden, taking the ferry to the Isle of Skye or just taking in one of the many castles like Eilean Donan. There is also an immense range of wildlife to be found.
