Lodge On The Moor, near Blair Atholl (183)

Hidden away in a moorland setting, this Highland holiday house is an escape from it all, yet well placed to explore Perthshire and beyond.

Accessed via a private woodland, yet only one mile off the main A9 road, this holiday house, set within an 18,000 acre estate, can be found in a secluded spot with open moorland views. Built in 1996 as a stylised version of a shooting lodge which has an excellent use of light and space in the main reception rooms, as well as being practical. It is approached via an uphill private road with hard surface track, which takes you to the back of the house.

The lodge offers all the facilities required for a self-catered holiday, with a large well equipped kitchen, and with the addition of a larder, utility room, TV room and a large drawing room, with picture windows. Access to the TV room and drawing room is via six steps, whilst there are two bedrooms at ground level, the rest of the bedrooms are on the floor above. The combination of comfort and elegance, with a wonderful view, makes for a great holiday house for up to 12 people. It is enclosed by a deer fence. With garden furniture to the front of the house, it is an ideal setting on a summer evening. This is an ideal base to have a family holiday to discover Perthshire and beyond.

Living Space

Reception rooms

The entrance hall takes you to a large reception hall, which is the central thoroughfare of the house. The large drawing room is accessed by some steps and is located to the front of the house, with views overlooking the moor on three sides. This is a fabulous room with floor to ceiling windows bringing in so much light and offering wonderful moorland scenes. With an open fire at one side of the room, surrounded by comfortable sofas and armchairs, at the other end there is further comfortable seating with a bay window. There is easy access to the outside area, where in the summer months sitting outside would be delightful. Next door is a small TV room, which is functional rather than stylish. Upstairs in the central landing space there is a small seating area above the gallery overlooking the dining room, making this is a pleasant place to socialise in comfort.

Kitchen / Dining

The kitchen is situated centrally next door to the dining room. It is a well designed and planned kitchen with distinctive work area and informal seating area. The cooking area is set within an L-shaped semi-enclosed area and houses an impressive large stainless steel cooking range, with 6-ring gas hobs and double oven. There are plenty of work surfaces and this kitchen could cater for many more than the 12 people advertised. The seating area can house 4 people. Additionally there is a substantial larder and a separate utility room. The dining room is an amazing room, with a high ceiling and a gallery above. The matching table and chairs can seat 10/12 people. With a front view, it also enjoys wonderful views across the moors.

Grounds & Surrounds

Set within 18,000 acres of sporting estate, it is accessed off the main Inverness – Perth route, the A9, onto a hard surface private road that takes you through forest and after 1 mile comes to the lodge. This is located beyond the woodland with the open moor to the front. Blair Atholl is the nearest village, with a village store, pub and hotel. Pitlochry, which is 18 miles away, has a major Coop, shops and restaurants. Nearby is Blair Castle and the Atholl Estate, which offers as extra, a Ranger service and additional activities, like pony trekking, guided land rover tours, fishing on the river or hill lochs can all be arranged. For golfers the nearest golf course is at Blair Atholl. Blair Castle and the House of Bruar are nearby for outings.

LocationBlair Atholl

Blair Atholl is a village that gets a lot of traffic coming through it, even though the main Perth – Inverness route, the A9, by-passes this popular location. Whilst it is an attractive village in its own right, the main focus of attention is visiting the historic Blair Castle, the ancestral home to the Dukes of Atholl. The Blair Estate also offers guided tours by rangers on the estate and there are a number of other activities that are great for all the family, including pony-trekking. For walkers there is access to Glen Tilt, which takes you all the way to Braemar. The House of Bruar shopping emporium is nearby and always proves a major hit for shoppers.


Perthshire is a natural choice for visitors as geographically it is in the very heart of Scotland. Its popularity is no wonder; with the lush lowland pastures of the south meeting the rugged grandeur of the Highlands, this county is beautifully rich in scenery and magnificent landscapes. The old county of Kinross-shire is now generally considered to be part of this region, and the local council area is now called Perth and Kinross. Kinross sits beside the beautiful Loch Leven, with Lochleven Castle nearby. The central point is the city of Perth, the fair city bustles with life, with the river Tay running through it. The impressive Scone Palace is nearby, which was the crowning place for Scottish Kings. Perthshire is also home to the world famous Gleneagles Hotel and leisure complex. This is also Big Tree Country, with the world's highest hedge at Meikleour, Europe's oldest tree, the widest conifer in Britain, the sole survivor from Shakespeare's Birnam Wood and many more fascinating trees. Why not visit Glenshee and take part in some skiing, or try mountain biking through the many hills and glens. Blair Castle is an impressive site, and with expansive grounds and an adventure playground, will entertain the whole family. 

Highlands and Islands

This region takes in Inverness-shire, Ross-shire, Sutherland, Caithness and the islands include the Inner and Outer Hebrides as well as Orkney and the Shetland islands. For spectacular scenery the Highlands of Scotland provides some of the best, with a huge expanse of area full of mountains, lochs and glens full of romance, wildlife and scenic beauty. The heritage of this area includes Culloden, taking the ferry to the Isle of Skye or just taking in one of the many castles like Eilean Donan. There is also an immense range of wildlife to be found.

5th January 2018 Sad 

I'm not going to lie. We absolutely love the house. It's incredible. We have stayed twice now. The latest was a stay over christmas. We had an incredible time. The day prior to leaving and the departure day was spent cleaning. Above and beyond what is normal for a holiday home. We thought the place was as it was when we arrived. But alas we were hit with charges. The most ridiculous of which were:
Beds not being stripped (what the hell? Do they expect us to do the cleaners job for them)
And sofa wasn't returned to proper position (90 degree turn)
Bins were overflowing (it was christmas). They also lied about not using the bins and emptied them before taking a photo with the rubbish outside of the bin!
Bathroom bins weren't emptied (house cleaners feeling a little bit lazy?)
The oven needed a ''deep clean'' (the picture provided a smudge of grease. We're we not suppose to use it?)
We were also told after arriving that the water was unsafe to drink, we were supplied with a massively inadequate amount of bottled water meaning having to leave to go and buy more, something basic that we should have bean told before we left.
If they wanted these preposterous rules followed they should not have hidden the rule book on a book shelf amongst a thousand other books. I feel like we've been scammed. Such a disappointment. I have seen multiple reviews highlighting this kind of thing since getting home. We have no issue in paying for damages and if we had been told about the rule book maybe we would have moved the cutlery to the correct drawer (another unexpected issue) but the break down of the bill was beyond excessive. Making out like we had gone wild in the place - a toddler marking the wall equalling to £50 damage and approx 15 hours of total cleaning time!? Summing, conveniently, to the deposit amount of £245!
Sad to have a holiday ruined by such sharks.

Product : Many thanks for your comments, we're very sorry to hear you're unhappy with the decision following the claim raised by the estate after your stay, whilst all of our properties are contracted to be thoroughly cleaned in between groups the property manager at the lodge had confirmed that unfortunately their standard departure guidelines were not followed on this occasion and additional housekeeping was required over and above the usual amount (as detailed in the cost breakdown/images sent to you by email)   

Whilst we are very happy to mediate claims as best we can, ultimately your contract is between yourself and the owners, who have received a copy of all of your comments and are better placed to discuss this being onsite. Whilst we have closed claim closed following our usual Good Housekeeping Deposit policy accepted by you at booking stage, the estate manager has confirmed that they would have welcomed any communication from your group before finalising the claim and they're still happy to speak with you should you should you require further clarification, please let us know if you require another copy of any contact details.

Apologies for any misunderstanding about the water supply during your stay, we were unaware of this at the time and are unsure who you spoke with about this onsite. We're sorry to hear you ran out of bottled water. We have been in touch with the estate who have reconfirmed that whilst the water is safe and drinkable, the UV filter was being replaced and the housekeeper has advised that more can be provided if requested.

We're delighted to hear that you enjoyed your second stay at the lodge and had an incredible Christmas and hope as an agency, that the result of the claim hasn't fully tarnished any happy memories.

Great house; easily accommodated our party with excellent and comfortable bedrooms. Kitchen and dining facilities were spacious, well equipped and easy to use. Only major suggestion would be to bring your own cork-screw - the one available was strictly semi-pro and not really fit for purpose! (Needed straightening with pliers!)
Great views and we were lucky with the weather and able to sit outside watching deer and eagles with a gin and tonic
The living room was a great social space with comfy couches.A piano would have been nice but not essential!

What can you say when the Lodge was quite literally perfect?? Everything was exceptional - the rooms, the kitchen, the garden, the view out of the back, the walks, and even the weather! Best treat was the living room FULL of barca-lounger chairs - enough for all of our group to have one each!

The price cannot be beat for what you get, and Susan is extremely helpful and kind. Stunning walks along the track (complete with magnificent stags!). Truly one of the best lodges I have visited, and one of the best weekends I've ever had!

We are already making plans to return in the autumn/winter, and cannot wait!

Good value. Very spacious house with everything you need for family holiday. Rural and peaceful with lovely views. Saw deer every evening. Good log supply for everyone we came across was very friendly and helpful. Only thing they could improve is by having a proper dishwasher and en fire every evening. better tumble drier. The house is amazing. Plenty of space, kept nice and warm and everything you need for a nice weekend. The kitchen is very well stocked with cookware. There are games and books in the lounge area (including a couple of murder mystery games!). The views from the house are beautiful and having the moors right on the doorstop gives you an easy, relaxing walking spot.

Fantastic house in an amazing setting. The lodge is extremely clean, warm and very well equipped. The bedrooms are huge and have very comfortable beds. The views from the main lounge are great. There are plenty of places to walk, we managed to spot a few red squirrels which was a bonus. I cannot recommend this lodge enough and will definitely return in the future.

28th January 2015 Excellent 

This has been one of the best weekend myself and my whole family have enjoyed together, we go away together reguarly but this was special, and it was the sceanery and the lodge that made it.
We were warned before we went that the snow was pretty bad, and they weren't kidding, Susan, Kev and another man (sorry I can't remember his name) met us in landrovers and unloaded all our luggage and food to take up to the house. They were a massive help thoughout the weekend, coming up to take the men back to the cars for shooting and then again to take us for some food provisions - they were so helpful and we can't thank them enough.
Where the house is situated it is breathtaking, and the house itself was amazing, It has amazing features, the livingroom and dinning room especially!! There was plenty room for all 12 of us not to get on top of each other. We had 5 children and a dog with us that were running in and out from the snow all the time but the house had a relaxed feel where you didn't feel you had to be on their backs making sure they were taking their shoes off etc.
We are booking again to go up in the summer, an amazing place and amazing people who run it!
All in all fantastic weekend and great value for money!!!

The lodge is undoubtedly in a fabulous spot. The design and construction is fantastic and there are acres of space. Sadly however, it is in need of much maintenance. Paint is peeling on the exterior, interior finishes are very poor, furniture is threadbare, pine furniture is all old and badly worn, the kitchen is dirty and requires a real over haul. Bathrooms are large but again in need of some investment. The showers in particular are hopeless. Weak and cold.At this price point we were expecting much more. Per previous review the ovenware/utensils are sticky and need replacing. With such acres of space in the bedrooms it is very odd that there are 4ft6in standard double beds. We had a great stay, down to location and the fact that it was Xmas. Its a great place but don't expect luxury.

Beyond that, apart from the festive periods, it is offered as a value-for-money holiday house, which is practical rather than a luxurious venue. Beautiful setting and lovely house in need of some refurbishment. Fabulous views were not enhanced by the very dirty windows. Loved the fact that nearly all the bedrooms had en suites but slightly disappointed by the poor standard of cleanliness of cutlery, crockery and kitchen equipment. Having said that these are minor issues but thought you would appreciate the feedback. We all had a brilliant time and loved the house.
