Large Country House, near Tarbert (096)

The Mull of Kintyre, the mist rolling in from the sang this former west coast resident, Paul McCartney. Come and see for yourself what he loved about this area

Once a country hotel, this refurbished Victorian large holiday home is situated in seven acres of grounds, with a south westerly aspect and offers spacious accommodation, which is perfect for entertaining friends and family. Beautifully decorated, retaining many original features, such as wood panelling and open fires, the large front facing drawing room is a lovely example of this. Year on year it is being improved and it has become one of the best party houses on the west coast and well worth travelling to.

With one bedroom at ground level, the additional bedrooms and bathrooms are on the two floors above, which can sleep 24 adults and 6 children in total. This delightful country house is ideal for a family holiday, an event, a wedding, or for those just wishing to base themselves within this wonderful part of the west coast of Scotland. There have even been rumours of a resident ghost, but you will only be able to judge for yourselves if this is fact or fiction.

For wedding or events to be held here – then the initial booking would be made on a standard self-catering basis and all other costs would be advised over the enquiry/visit. Wedding fees apply over and above the maximum occupancy.

*A newly installed hot tub was made available from 17th August 2019**

Reception rooms

The reception rooms are the largest rooms in this beautiful house and they mirror each other, one above the other. At ground floor, with large bay window, is the drawing room with wood panelled walls, ornate ceiling and open fire. The seating is all comfortable leather sofas and this is a superb room to gather and catch up with the events of the day.

The sitting room above is a little more elegant and is lighter in touch with whites and softer coloured sofas, as well as TV. There is also a play room opposite which is great for children. The SKY TV has sports and childrens packages.

The games room is the conservatory room (also used for functions) with pool table, table tennis top and a piano (that is regularly tuned). There's a bluetooth speaker and docking station available for guests to connect their iphones/pods to with a cable. Guests are advised to bring a spare connecting cable as the one the owners leave out often disappears, so the owners cannot guarantee one will be made available during your stay.

Back on the ground floor, the old lounge bar is still in situ (un-stocked) and this is also a great place to have a quiet drink. There are pipes for real ales. Many guests bring a keg or order one from Loch Fyne Ales for delivery prior to arrival. The owners are happy to put it in place if delivered a few days before (it should be allowed a few days to settle). Pipes are left clean and cleaning fluid is made available, however guests will need to connect the key to the pipes as the owners do not have anyone on site to does this.

The sun room opens out to the patio or you can stay inside and play a game of pool. A ‘ladies’ and ‘gentleman’ dual cloakroom is available at ground level.

Kitchen / Dining

The country style kitchen is a delightful space with modern fitted units, an island with plenty of work space and an area of seating for a few people in a less formal fashion. With 3 ovens - one large, one small and one combo/microwave oven, there is plenty of cooking capacity for the numbers advertised. Additionally you'll be provided with all the equipment you'll need plus there's breakfasting for up to 10 people around the pine table.

There are two dining areas, both at ground level, and which one you use will be dependent on your group size. The main Victorian dining room is opposite the kitchen of proportionate size for that era, with a table that can comfortably seat 18, or up to a maximum of 22 people. Previous guests have managed to squeeze 30 around the table by adding tables to the main one in a T-shape. It works but is cosy so we're told!

Events above capacity of the house

The other dining area forms part of a later extension (a conservatory) which can seat up to 50 people if required. The conservatory room is the games room with pool table, table tennis top and piano.

Whilst this area is only used for events in reality, there is also a commercial kitchen off this room, which can be made available to cooks if they are cooking for larger numbers than the capacity of the house, otherwise this is not available to use. The catering kitchen will only be made available to professional cooks.

If you wish to gain access to the catering kitchen and conservatory to host an event, additional charges will apply as these areas will need to be staffed.

This area is ideal for walkers, ramblers and cyclists, with routes taking in places of archaeological interest and coastal scenery. Notes & Warnings

There is a private water supply at this property, which is checked on an annual basis by the local authority. After periods of heavy rain the water is prone to discolour due to the peat, which takes some getting used to if you have not experienced this before.

The tranquil town of Tarbert is built on the edge of the isthmus linking Kintyre with Knapdale. With Loch Fyne to the east, and West Loch Tarbert to the west, the town is the gateway to the Kintyre peninsula. Set around the attractive natural harbour and marina the town enjoys lovely views across the water, best appreciated from the hill-top ruins of Robert the Bruce’s Castle, located a short walk south of the harbour. Further west the ferry terminal offers important links across Loch Fyne. Tarbert has its own 9 hole course for a spot of leisurely golf, and the Kintyre Way walking route passes through the town. There are a number of other walking routes around the area, taking in the rugged landscapes of the peninsula.

Argyllshire is one of the larger of the Scottish counties. Located in the west, Argyll incorporates the coastline and isles between the Mull of Kintyre up to Ardnamurchan. The area’s biggest attraction is its immense range of landscapes; with miles of rugged cliffs and mountainous highland scenery to discover, as well as beautiful woodlands, the area is a dream destination for nature lovers. Why not visit the magnificent volcanic rock island of Staffa, where the puffins make their summer home? Or join the Beaver Trail to spot the elusive mammal recently reintroduced to the area. You could also take in the Gulf of Corryvreckan on the island at Jura, the third largest natural whirlpool in the world! Island hopping tours are a great way to discover the isles of Argyll, and for keen walkers, the mountainous landscapes of the likes of Ardgour, and the westerly range of Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park are well worth a visit. Towns to take in include Oban, a resort town nestled on the Firth of Lorn; Dunoon, home to the famous Cowal Highland Gathering, an annual highland games; and Campbeltown, the county’s historic centre for whisky, fishing and ship-building.

Highlands and Islands

This region takes in Inverness-shire, Ross-shire, Sutherland, Caithness and the islands include the Inner and Outer Hebrides as well as Orkney and the Shetland islands. For spectacular scenery the Highlands of Scotland provides some of the best, with a huge expanse of area full of mountains, lochs and glens full of romance, wildlife and scenic beauty. The heritage of this area includes Culloden, taking the ferry to the Isle of Skye or just taking in one of the many castles like Eilean Donan. There is also an immense range of wildlife to be found.

31st August 2017 Great

Fabulous mansion. Only comment is that such early check out and late check in are not appropriate for visitors travelling from afar, or overseas. The company and owners need to take this point into consideration. If someone hAs spent 6 to 10 hours travelling then they would surely prefer an earlier check in. Otherwise no complaints

Service rating : Thank you so much for your review, we are glad to hear your group enjoyed the house, it’s location and overall rated the service highly. We understand that you have already been in touch with the owners who have investigated these points you’ve raised and improvements have been actioned for future guests.

Product : Sounds like you had a fabulous time at this mansion, for what was a very special trip! The standard check in times are advertised on the website prior to booking and we can see an earlier check in was discussed with you before arrival, which the owners were unable to confirm until nearer to the time. As with all of these large holiday houses the window for changeover is quite short in between groups and the housekeeping team require the usual time to prepare the property to standard for the next guests, however where possible this is accommodated.

We can see the owners did try their best to facilitate this for you and we hope you found it helpful dropping of your luggage and groceries early after a long trip.

Thanks again for your review, all guest feedback is greatly appreciated and should you wish to visit another property with us in the future we would be more than happy to help.

31st August 2016 Excellent

From the excellent tour and welcome from the housekeeper, to the stunningly well-equipped kitchen and dining room, to the comfortable living rooms and beautifully-decorated bedrooms, this was a wonderful house to bring the entire family to. We all fit around the dining room table for some incredible meals, and gathered in the large living room for games, all managing to fit most comfortably on sofas and armchairs by the fire. There was a piano and other musical instruments, which allowed us to play music together. And the bar was a lovely place to hang out in the evenings. The garden was great for playing sports, and the sunsets from the view down the road were stunning. Our day trip to Gigha was a high point, and so easy and close to travel to. We couldn't have been happier and are definitely planning on returning!

Service rating : So pleased to hear your excellent feedback, glad you found our service helpful and we would love to be of assistance again in the future.

The house is magnificent, and yet homely, with lovely extra touches like fresh flowers in the living rooms and hairdryers and kettles in the bedrooms.
