Castle Tower Apartment, near Inverurie (055)

Staying at this celebrated castle allows you to experience centuries of history in comfort and style, which those before you like Robert the Bruce could only imagine.

This is one of Scotland’s great castles and dates back to the 13th century, with five towers, each built and named after one of the five families who owned it in succession; of which one tower is now available to let for family and group holidays within easy drive of Aberdeen and the Moray Firth coastline. 

It is run by the National Trust for Scotland, and the main section of the castle is available for guided tours by the public, whilst the garden and grounds is open all year round. The letting apartment was refurbished in 2015 and comfortably accommodates a group of 16 guests, spread over four floors accessed via steep central turnpike stairs.  All the rooms have an old school charm and castle-like feel, and there is never any doubt you are staying in a real castle. Set amidst open parkland, with a loch and beautiful mature gardens, which all provide beautiful spaces for short or long walks in the country.

Living Space

Reception rooms

Set over 5 floors, the impressive  receptions rooms are to be found on the 2nd floor of this tower, which is accessed via the turnpike stairs. The large elegant drawing room forms an L-shaped room, with windows overlooking to the front lawn of the castle and to the other side, the inner courtyard. With comfortable sofas and armchairs, there are period antiques and fine pictures throughout. Next door is a snug area, which is a library, which is ideal for children to play in peace and quiet or to get away for a moment to read the paper in your own space.

Kitchen / Dining

Set beside the drawing room on the second floor can be found the dining room, which is a very elegant room, with ornate ceiling work and tall windows with impressive curtains. The fine mahogany table and chairs seats everyone in great style and is ideal for a fine feast or special occasion meal.

The well equipped kitchen is next door, which was modernised in 2015, is more modest in scale and style, but is adequate for the needs of the group size. There is everything you would expect with an electric cooker, microwave, dishwasher, washing machine, tumble dryer and upright fridge freezer.

Grounds & Surrounds

Located 23 miles north of Aberdeen, at the edge of the village of Fyvie, within its own walled grounds and gardens, which are open to the public. With a general store, pub and hotel in the village, the nearest major superstore can be found in Inverurie, which is 10 miles away.

Golf courses can be found locally at Oldmeldrum or further afield at Cruden Bay or Royal Aberdeen. Fishing on the river Ythan or Deveron can be arranged locally. The Castle Trail is a draw in this area.  The nearest distillery is Glendronach. There is easy access to Aberdeen with its restaurants, clubs and shops. A falconry centre can be found near Huntly.

Whilst the apartment is completely private, the main section of the castle is available for guided tours by the public, and the garden and grounds are open all year round.

The turnpike stairs are steep running over 4 floors, which means children and guests with walking difficulties should take extra care.

Travelling with a baby? The cot and highchair are not stored in the apartment. If you'd like to use them please make this known when you confirm your booking, so the owner knows to bring them out on arrival. 


Nestled in the valley of the River Don, in Aberdeenshire, the small town of Inverurie is known as the Heart of the region of Aberdeenshire called Garioch.  The town is home to the Glen Garioch Distillery, open to visitors who wish to learn more about the great Scottish whisky. Inverurie Golf course offers pleasant parkland and 18 holes for visiting golfers. A few miles south of the town is the striking Castle Frazer, where you can wander the baronial tower and attractive grounds and gardens. For keen walkers and explorers, the town is close to Bennachie, offering gentle walks or hikes to the top, the countryside has beautiful scenery and abundant wildlife. The Bennachie Centre offers a lovely starting point to your exploration, where you can learn about the heritage of the place and people who lived in the area. 


Aberdeenshire, located on the north east of Scotland’s mainland, boasts a unique array of landscape and heritage.  The historic county of Banffshire on the north coast is now commonly considered to be part of Aberdeenshire. The many miles of easterly coastline offers rugged cliffs as well as sandy beaches and appeals to watersport enthusiasts. The inland westerly border incorporates the Cairngorm National Park, attracting walkers and explorers. The region is home the Lecht Ski Resort, and Glenshee Ski Resort, so really can cater for a massive range of sports! Investigation of the Castle Trail is a must – the trail takes in 17 of the best castles Aberdeenshire has to offer, including Balmoral Castle, seasonal home to the Royal Family. Aberdeen plays a part in the oil and gas industry forming a land base for the North Sea oil rigs, however don’t be deceived by what you may find here – the city has won the ‘Britain in Bloom’ award a record breaking 13 times, thanks to its incredible number of parks and gardens, and is home to a beautiful stretch of sandy beach. Its nickname the ‘Granite City’ is courtesy of its quarrying history, and the famous 'Granite Mile' (Union Street) is home to many shops. The traditional neighbouring towns of Banff and Macduff sit on either side of the River Deveron, a popular fishing river, and nearby you will find the magnificent Duff House. Other large towns in the area include Peterhead and Fraserburgh, both fishing towns on the north east coast, and the market town of Inverurie. 

Highlands and Islands

This region takes in Inverness-shire, Ross-shire, Sutherland, Caithness and the islands include the Inner and Outer Hebrides as well as Orkney and the Shetland islands. For spectacular scenery the Highlands of Scotland provides some of the best, with a huge expanse of area full of mountains, lochs and glens full of romance, wildlife and scenic beauty. The heritage of this area includes Culloden, taking the ferry to the Isle of Skye or just taking in one of the many castles like Eilean Donan. There is also an immense range of wildlife to be found.
