Castle by Arbroath, near Arbroath (181)

This stunning fairytale castle would be a perfect getaway for anyone looking for an authentic historic holiday

In continuous occupation since it was built in 1545, this is a fine example of a 16th century Z-plan tower house with a distinctive feature pepper-pot turret. With a red sandstone finish and a pink-wash exterior, the reddish hue seems to change colour whilst you are there. Particular castle-like features include the gun-loops and shot-holes, as well as the vaulted entrance and Great Hall. Set in open countryside, within 10 acres of grounds, surrounded by lawns and mature woodland, the castle is accessible by a drive on each side. On entering, the corridor takes you to a vaulted entrance hall, with a games room off it. Beyond, the rooms are more traditional, and there is a dining room that has the capacity for up to 14 people, a breakfasting room, utility room and a country style kitchen.

On the first floor, there is a Great Hall which is the large drawing room, a sitting room, a TV room, a small libary and the first bedroom and shower room. The majority of the bedrooms and bathrooms are to be found on the second floor. Also available is an eco-friendly (with no added chemicals) rustic wooden barrel hot tub, heated by a wood burning stove. There is plenty of parking to the front and side of the castle. Weddings are currently not allowed, except for groups of 14 who are using the castle on a normal booking basis. Two dogs are allowed, at ground level only. This is an ideal large holiday home to have a family holiday to discover the Angus and Tayside area and enjoy being king or queen of this castle.

Reception rooms

Entering this castle via the tower section takes you into the oldest part of the castle. If those stone walls could talk they would have some tall tales to tell. This takes you through the stone-clad vaulted entrance hall, as well as the vaulted games room with its table football table and small fold-able pool table. Whilst the kitchen and dining room are beyond, the reception rooms are to be found on the first floor. The Great Hall is the drawing room with comfortable seating at each end of the room, with one working open fire. A small library is located in the corner turret. The sitting room is next door, which is another large room and this is where you will relax in cosy surrounds by the wood-burning stove with the TV on. Additionally there is a smaller room with TV, which may be more suitable for children.

Kitchen / Dining

The dining room is a large room with a selection of sizes of dining tables, which can be added together if required or left as they are. Next door is they large kitchen, which has an old fashioned feel about it, in the country kitchen style. With plenty of cooking capacity with a traditional AGA and two additional electric cookers with 4-ring hobs and ovens, this is a castle that is used to cooking for large numbers. The country table can seat up to 6 in the kitchen or you can choose the breakfast room next door, which can dine your group in a less formal environment. There is a utility room next door. There is a side door which may be easier to deliver your foodstuffs from car to kitchen.

Located on the west coast of Angus is the historic harbour town of Arbroath, renowned for its 'Arbroath Smokies' (smoked haddock to you and me!). With sandy beaches, and rugged cliffs the coastline at Arbroath is perfect for walking, there are nature trails with plenty of wildlife to spot too! Visit the ruins of the impressive 12th Century Arbroath Abbey, a Tironensian monastery, located in the town centre, set in beautiful grounds. The Visitor Centre provides information on the historic site. Located at waters edge, by the harbour, is Arbroath Signal Tower Museum, the exhibit tells the story of the maritime and industrial heritage of the town and the lighthouse tower. Take the children to Kerr’s Miniature Railway, where there is a range of miniature engines to see, and take a trip on the ride-on train along the seafront railway.

From pristine sandy beaches, rolling agricultural landscapes and the majestic heather clad hills and lush forests of the Angus Glens, Angus offers a range of breath taking scenery to soak up. Out in the countryside there are many Munros which offer superb walking opportunities or there is some of the best salmon and sea trout fishing in Scotland. The city of Dundee has a vibrant and lively centre; a great family day out, with fantastic shopping facilities! The harbour is home to the Discovery Point Visitor Centre, home to the spectacular ship RRS Discovery. Arbroath is an old fishing port famous the world over for its smoked fish, the Arbroath Smokie. It was here, in the Abbey, that the Declaration of Arbroath was signed in 1320. The coastal town of Montrose offers beautiful sandy beaches, and is home to a large nature reserve known as the Basin, a haven for wildlife, a special favourite for wading birds due to its muddy nature! There are also wonderful beaches at Lunan Bay and St Cyrus. The spectacular Glamis Castle, which was the childhood home of the late Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, is a fantastic family day out, and golfers must pay a visit to the famous Carnoustie championship golf course.

17th November 2018 Excellent

We stayed in Colliston Castle and loved it. The castle is very old but well equipped, warm and comfortable and the owners were very welcoming. There was the odd technical issue in such an old buiIdling but this did not stop us from having an enjoyable weekend. They are dog friendly which is also fantastic. Would highly recommend this venue to anyone wanting a special stay in a real castle!

25th May 2016 Excellent

We had a great time at the castle and are looking forward to booking again for another trip we have also let other WI's Know how fab it is and in a beautiful setting. Sue and John had left a lovely welcome pack and Kenny met us and showed us round it was very useful to have the little manual about the castle and everything we needed for our stay.
The castle is very well equipped, lovely beds and lots of outdoor seating for when the weather is nice as it was for our stay.
The only negative I can add was when booking I felt the emails and the process was a bit abrupt.

Service rating : Great that you all enjoyed the castle experience and I’m sure you have lots of lovely memories from the trip. When guests would like to book a property, our arrangement with all of our property owners is that dates are placed on a provisional hold usually for 3 days however had we known your committee would need a little longer to finalise plans and arrange the deposit funds then we would have been very happy to reach an agreement with the owners of the castle on your behalf. Glad that we were able to re secure the dates for you.

Product : Many thanks for taking the time to leave us feedback on your holiday experience and so glad to hear your stay at the castle was a success and that the nice weather meant you could make the most of the lovely grounds.
