16th Century Castle, near Grantown-on-Spey

With stunning views over to the Cairngorm mountains, this quirky castle is the perfect place to choose to unwind and relax in a wonderful setting.

This castle is a 16th century tower house, which was fully restored in 1985, built to an L-plan, with central stone turnpike stairs. It is available as a stand-alone holiday house for up to 6 adults and 4 children on a self-catering basis and is a very popular property. The kitchen and dining area is in the ground floor vaulted room, whilst the large room on the floor above would have been the Great Hall, which is now the sitting room, with open fire. The bedrooms are located on the second and third floors, and consist of a four poster double room, two twin rooms and two bunkrooms. The castle is set in an acre of garden, and enjoys fantastic views over Strathspey and onto the magnificent Cairngorm mountain range.

The sunroom offers a larger picture window than the rest of the historic castleThis vaulted ground floor room houses the kitchen and dining roomThe Great Hall is located on the first floor and is now the sitting roomAn open fire is welcome in any weather

Living Space

Reception rooms

Accessed via a stone spiral staircase, what would have been the Great Hall on the first floor is now the sitting room. This wood panelled room with open fire has comfortable seating and a TV. Whilst the windows are small as you would expect for a 16th century castle, the views are tremendous. At ground level, beyond the vaulted kitchen/dining room, there is an additional room, which has been added in the space created between the castle and an outbuilding. This is a sun room, with a glass roof and side panels, which warms up nicely in the summer months, but less so in the winter.

Kitchen / Dining

The vaulted kitchen is located at ground level and consists of a kitchen/dining room. With a traditional whitewash arched vaulted ceiling, a modest clad-pine kitchen has been fitted to the shape of the room. There are electric hobs and an integral oven and grill, with dishwasher and fridge freezer – in fact everything you would expect to facilitate 8/10 people. A large pine table and matching chairs can seat the group in comfort during your stay, whether it be a simple supper or a medieval feast. There is a utility room beyond the sun room.

LocationGrantown-on-Spey

The picturesque town of Grantown-upon-Spey was formed in 1765 and is located on the edge of the Cairngorm National Park between Aviemore and Elgin. The highlights of the area are many but the river Spey defines this area. Fishing for salmon is very popular, as is walking the Speyside Way and of course, there is the Malt Whisky Trail to visit as many of the famous Speyside whisky distilleries as you can. The town offers a range of activities to suit all the family with an 18-hole golf course and an outdoor centre at Craggan Mill. The Landmark Forest Adventure Park and the Steam Train to Aviemore offers further family activities. Travelling to Aviemore and gaining access to the Cairngorms for winter sports or summer walking, could not be easier.

Morayshire

Located in the Highlands on the north coast of Scotland, Moray is one of the smaller of Scotland’s counties. There are some mountainous features including Bin Hill, but its main draw is the magnificent coastline, along the Moray Firth. Dolphin watching is most popular, with boat trips available to spot the many sea creatures that frequent the area. Seals, porpoises and the occasional whale have been seen in the Firth. The area of Culbin Sands, Culbin Forest and Findhorm Bay is a Site of Special Scientific Interest, and the Sands are an RSPB Reserve. The county is in the heart of Whisky country, with a vast number of distilleries in the area, including the historic Dallas Dhu, pristinely preserved and open to the public. For real enthusiasts, the Whisky Trail takes in many of the local distilleries in this area and is worth investigating! Towns and villages in the county include the fishing town of Lossiemouth on the north coast; Elgin, the historic city, home to the dramatic Elgin Cathedral ruins; and Forres, home to Brodie Castle and the Falconer Museum. Other attractions in the area include Spynie Palace, the former residence of the Bishop of Moray, Knockando Wool mill at Aberlour.

Highlands and Islands

This region takes in Inverness-shire, Ross-shire, Sutherland, Caithness and the islands include the Inner and Outer Hebrides as well as Orkney and the Shetland islands. For spectacular scenery the Highlands of Scotland provides some of the best, with a huge expanse of area full of mountains, lochs and glens full of romance, wildlife and scenic beauty. The heritage of this area includes Culloden, taking the ferry to the Isle of Skye or just taking in one of the many castles like Eilean Donan. There is also an immense range of wildlife to be found.

Beautiful castle and stunning location. The master bedroom complete with 4 poster bed was superb. Everything we needed and the town nearby, Grantown on Spey had a lovely range of shops and cafes. Weather could not have been better too. Would certainly use Scotts Castles again and maybe even the same castle!

15th August 2015 Excellent

The castle looks great when you first see it from the main road and turn up the dirt track.
It is an interesting and atmospheric place to stay but also well equipped for modern living. The kitchen is spacious and well kitted out and the upstairs living room has a large open fire and is great for use in the evening. The top shower is a little weak and the building feels dark inside - but then it is a castle! The sunroom makes up for the lack of light in the main building. It feels splendidly isolated but is handy for everything in the northern cairngorms area and the supermarket in Grantown. The restaurant in the hotel nearby is very good for a night out. One criticism is that although there is a washing machine, there is no dryer and no where to dry anything.
We had a great time and would highly recommend it.

Service rating : Glad we were able to help find your perfect castle holiday, and that all the relevant booking information along the way helped with the plans for the trip.
Product : Sounds like a great stay was had by all in this quirky tower, and glad to hear you also made the most of the fantastic mountain walks nearby! All feedback is very appreciated so that we may pass on any suggestions to our owners, and if you are interested in re-booking for your next trip please don’t hesitate to get back in touch.

We absolutely loved the castle. The kitchen and great hall provided lovely gathering space for our group yet there were plenty of bedrooms to allow individual privacy. POOR TO OK BUT NOT GREAT. First of all, they have a 4 star from Visit Scotland. Based on my vast experience in tourism and hospitality, and having stayed at numerous accommodation, including other castles, they should only have a 3 star! Here is why:
1. INTERIOR: The only room to have any thought put into the decor beyond very basic is the 4-post bed room. The other bedrooms and the main hall / sitting room and the sun room are very BLAND and even under decorated. Everything is lack lustre. You don't FEEL like you're in a castle in these rooms. The main hall simply has OLD furniture, not nicely decorated. Very dark room and dark furniture.
2. UN-MAID BEDS: We were required to put the sheets and blankets on the beds in the bunk beds room OURSELVES. The woman who cleans the interior said her knee was bad, BUT she also said she had young women doing the cleaning... I suggest their knees were NOT bad. There was no reason they could not make up this room themselves.
3. BATH TOWELS: In every room but the 4 poster, the bath towels were very TINY and very OLD. I'm 5 ft 6 inches and a size 10 and the towel did not reach around me.... it ended 4 inches short! It was thin and tatty. As I said, most of the towels were like this.
4. KITCHEN: The kitchen was well equipped and easy to use.
5. SUN ROOM: It would be nice to have a high table, even a folding table to use in this room to eat at, instead of always having to eat in the kitchen. I would not recommend Muckrach to anyone looking for a 'Castle EXPERIENCE' or looking for 'quality'.

In other words - Good and 3 stars, which is what I would agree with for this quirky castle. Thank you also for your email - and these reviews are public for everyone to base their opinions before booking and we are judged accordingly. How Visit Scotland grade a property is another matter, but I appreciate each person will have their own views, and like you, I would go slightly lower at the 3 stars. For those booking the bunkroom as extra, we can let them know in advance the sheets and bedding are provided on a self-make basis. Likewise we will be recomending new towels - though I will have to double-check this has not already happened, as your stay was back in June 2013. I will also now check some wording on the site to ensure that expectations are met. Thank you for your review.

29th January 2014 Excellent

The one area which could be improved upon concerns the equipment. There are for example only 13 forks (small and large) yet the castle could have 10 guests so should have at least 20.There are only 2 serving spoons. A small tray would also be useful. The fire still smokes! This is making the curtains somewhat sooty looking.

Nice to speak with you following your birthday celebrations at the castle, I am so pleased the family enjoyed the return visit.

Thank you for the additional comments regarding the chimney and equipment available at the castle, we will catch up with the castle administrators and hopefully with your feedback they can investigate fully, I’ll update you when I hear back from them.

Look forward to welcoming you back next year.
