15th Century Castle, near Inverurie (031)

This medieval castle, with its stone turnpike stairs and turrets, is everything an authentic castle should be. Here you can be king or queen of your own Scottish castle!

Sheltered within its own grounds, this is a typical late fifteenth century tower house built to a simple L-plan, with three storeys, a garret and a stone turnpike circular stairway. A further wing was added in the eighteenth century, and the castle is filled with antiques and period furniture. Owners of this castle over the centuries have included many of the old Aberdeenshire families including Forbes, Hay, Duff, Leith and Leslie. Today it is available for let on a self-catering basis for a week or weekend.

Within there is a formal drawing room, a snug, a sitting room with TV, a kitchen with breakfasting area and a wood panelled dining room that can seat up to 14 adults. The wide turnpike stair with a stone-clad wall gives the castle a distinct historic flavour. Whilst there is one bedroom on the first floor, the others are on the floors above, and include a four poster room, double rooms and twin-bedded rooms. The grounds consist of lawns and mixed woodlands with some nice walking areas. The property is only thirty minutes from Aberdeen and within the castle trail region. It is ideal for family occasions, wedding groups or for corporate events.

Entering the elegant first floor drawing room is like stepping back in time Located to the rear of the drawing room is the snug The spacious atmospheric dining room with family portraitsThe second sitting room has a TV and is a comfortable space for children The well equipped kitchen is located at ground levelThe cosy breakfast area within the kitchenThe hallway on the first floor

Living Space

Reception rooms

Accessed via a wide stone spiral staircase, what would have been the Great Hall on the first floor is now the drawing room. This is a painted wood panelled room with large open fire with formal seating and ancestral pictures on the wall. Definitely a room that takes you back in time. There is a snug area with books and a card table in one corner, with a small bar area in another corner. Beyond is the “withdrawing room”, the second sitting room, which is a blend of formal and comfortable. There is also an open fire, but here you will find more comfortable seating and the TV. This room is ideal for all the family or for children taking a break.

Kitchen / Dining

The dining room is to be found on the first floor and has a formal feel, with its wood panelled walls, family portraits and traditional dining table and chairs. The table comfortably seats up to 14 people and there is a back stairs that takes you down to the kitchen on the ground floor. Here you will find a practical kitchen with plenty of granite work surfaces. A traditional AGA with 2 hobs, double ovens and 2 warming ovens, along with a gas cooker, integral oven and microwave. There are additional larder rooms and utility rooms off the kitchen. The breakfasting area has part of the original stone wall showing and there is seating for up to 8 people.

Aberdeenshire

Aberdeenshire, located on the north east of Scotland’s mainland, boasts a unique array of landscape and heritage.  The historic county of Banffshire on the north coast is now commonly considered to be part of Aberdeenshire. The many miles of easterly coastline offers rugged cliffs as well as sandy beaches and appeals to watersport enthusiasts. 2nd February 2017 Great

The castle met all our expectations; nooks and crannies, cosy, a little cold but it soon warmed up with the roaring log fires throughout. Felt beautifully secluded although only a few minutes away from a village. Both old and young had a fantastic Hogmanay weekend with plentiful blankets, kitchen equipment and logs to keep us happy.

1st August 2015 Great

My family really enjoyed our week at Lickleyhead. The grounds were very pretty - especially the walled garden. The castle was clean and the kitchen was well stocked. The owner was very helpful. There was a bit of a problem with dampness in one of the bathrooms. The great room and dining room are perfect for holding large parties around log fires.

Service rating : Thank you for the great comments, glad we were able to help with the holiday plans and we would be delighted to help with your next Summer break!
Product : Glad to hear you found the castle perfect for your celebrations. Owners are always on site to assist with any minor issues during your stay but we will certainly pass your comments on.

6th November 2014 Excellent

appreciated the well stocked wood and kitchen. Think that the room above the snug has a leak in the chimney as it was too smokey to sleep in some nights when the snug fire was lit

Thank you for your feedback, glad you found both our service and the castle to be excellent!

We did try to catch you by telephone yesterday as we’ve spoken with the owner, who is most grateful for your feedback. She was not aware of an issue and although the chimney is regularly swept and checked, she will certainly investigate further.

We hope we can welcome you back to Scotland again in the future, please don’t hesitate to contact us if we can ever be of help with future plans!

25th August 2014 Excellent

Our family spent a wonderful fortnight at Lickleyhead Castle, thoroughly enjoying exploring historical and cultural sites nearby and farther afield. We were kindly welcomed by the owner upon arrival, who helped us with all practical details and generously stayed in contact during our stay. The kitchen is well equipped and it was a treat to cook with an Aga; bedrooms had fresh linens and towels, which were replaced half-way through our stay; and, we were grateful for the generous supply of wood for the fireplaces. This is an ideal place for a family or group of friends looking for relaxation in a peaceful historical setting. Our young daughter was thrilled to be at Lickleyhead. Many thanks indeed for such a memorable time -- Sam and Ingrid from the United States

5th August 2014 Sad

VERY dirty, a few cobwebs is fine, but this castle looked like no one had knocked down a cobweb or spider nest in at least 10 yrs, MOST of all in desperate need of repair; smell of rotted wood in bathrooms, and mouldy walls in bedroom, all sinks/tubs tile moulded, large water stain walls from leaky roof. We were able to ignore dirty carpets and grimy curtains, peeling paint from walls, etc. But strong rot smell is hard to ignore. Please note this is not our first time renting a castle in Scotland or other countries…this one is neglected, overpriced for its state, and maybe should not be rented out until properly maintained.-

8th May 2013 Great

Great castle, excellent location, well-equipped but cold on arrival. Took a while to warm up, but was fine by our third and last night. Electric blankets or more than 3 hot water bottles would be good. Additional firewood would have apparently cost £50. That seemed a little pricey if we only used a few additional logs. Suggest a sliding scale for additional firewood. May wish to consider adding scales and a rolling pin as we cook a lot and assumed these would be there. We thought the breakages charges were very expensive - a small amount of breakages should be included in the cost. This is feedback, which you asked for. Overall we had a great time and it was a fantastic castle.

I’m so pleased to hear you had a great time at Lickleyhead Castle, thank you for your feedback this is always appreciated. I’ll pass this onto the owners.

Please don’t hesitate to contact us if we can help with future holiday plans, and claim a discount under our returning client scheme (T&C’s apply)

12th January 2013 Great

An extremely quirky castle, rooms on multiple levels and a great kitchen. Lots of spiral staircases to get to higher floors, these are difficult at times with luggage. The heating could be on all day as you can tell by the air temp drop when it is off (Winter it felt cold and damp for a day or so). The firewood supplied is only enough for one fire 24 hrs, but the castle has multiple communal areas with fireplaces where all gather. There was a 50 pound charge for extra wood. The breakage rule was extreme, 5 pound per item, appears many previous tenants didn't own up, as there were many chipped plates, mugs, cups, glasses etc. Generally it was a fabulous stay and memories will be with us forever.

Delighted to hear you enjoyed your holiday and thanks for the lovely feedback. Your comments re the wood and breakage fee are being investigated with the owner as we were not made aware of them during our inspection of the castle last year. If we can assist with any future visits to Scotland, please do not hesitate to contact us.
