15th Century Castle, near Inverurie

This medieval castle, with its stone turnpike stairs and turrets, is everything an authentic castle should be. Here you can be king or queen of your own Scottish castle!

Sheltered within its own grounds, this is a typical late fifteenth century tower house built to a simple L-plan, with three storeys, a garret and a stone turnpike circular stairway. A further wing was added in the eighteenth century, and the castle is filled with antiques and period furniture. Within there is a formal drawing room with a snug, a sitting room, a kitchen with breakfasting area and a wood panelled dining room that can seat up to 14 adults. Whilst there is one bedroom on the first floor, the others are on the floors above.

The grounds consist of lawns and mixed woodlands and are private. It is ideal for family occasions, wedding groups or for corporate events. The property is only thirty minutes from Aberdeen and within the castle trail region.

Entering the elegant drawing room on the first floor is like stepping back in timeLocated to the rear of the drawing room is the snugThe dining room is atmospheric with wood panelling and family portraitsA further sitting room is located beyond the dining roomThe well equipped kitchen is located at ground levelStone turnpike stairs are a classic character feature of Scottish castles

Living Space

Reception rooms

Accessed via a wide stone spiral staircase, what would have been the Great Hall on the first floor is now the drawing room. This is a painted wood panelled room with large open fire, with formal seating and ancestral pictures on the wall. There is a snug area with books and a card table, as well as a TV. There is a secondary sitting room available, beyond the dining room on the first floor, which is known as the “withdrawing room”. Again this is quite a formal room with an open fire.

Kitchen / Dining

The dining room is to be found on the first floor, and with its wood panelled walls, traditional dining table and chairs, it has a formal look. The table comfortably seats up to 14 people and there is a back stairs that takes you down to the kitchen on the ground floor. Here you will find a practical kitchen with plenty of granite work surfaces. On offer is a traditional AGA with 2 hobs, double ovens and 2 warming ovens, along with a traditional gas cooker, integral oven and microwave. There are additional larder rooms and utility rooms off the kitchen. The breakfasting area has part of the original stone wall showing and there is seating for up to 8 people.

Bedrooms & Bathrooms - Sleeps 14

There are seven bedrooms, with one four poster bedroom, but all are eclectic and different in style. Whilst there is one double bedroom on the first floor, all the others are accessed off the main stone spiral staircase on the floors above. With a selection of double beds and twin-bedded rooms, each has its own character. The bathrooms are all different from each other, with a mix of antique baths, situated at ground floor to turret space on the third floor. Some are hip baths and due to regulations regarding altering rooms in historic houses, some of these bathrooms are quite compact.

Nestled in the valley of the River Don, in Aberdeenshire, the small town of Inverurie is known as the Heart of the region of Aberdeenshire called Garioch.  The town is home to the Glen Garioch Distillery, open to visitors who wish to learn more about the great Scottish whisky. Inverurie Golf course offers pleasant parkland and 18 holes for visiting golfers. A few miles south of the town is the striking Castle Frazer, where you can wander the baronial tower and attractive grounds and gardens. For keen walkers and explorers, the town is close to Bennachie, offering gentle walks or hikes to the top, the countryside has beautiful scenery and abundant wildlife. The Bennachie Centre offers a lovely starting point to your exploration, where you can learn about the heritage of the place and people who lived in the area.

Aberdeenshire

Aberdeenshire, located on the north east of Scotland’s mainland, boasts a unique array of landscape and heritage.  The historic county of Banffshire on the north coast is now commonly considered to be part of Aberdeenshire. The many miles of easterly coastline offers rugged cliffs as well as sandy beaches and appeals to watersport enthusiasts. The inland westerly border incorporates the Cairngorm National Park, attracting walkers and explorers. The region is home the Lecht Ski Resort, and Glenshee Ski Resort, so really can cater for a massive range of sports! Investigation of the Castle Trail is a must – the trail takes in 17 of the best castles Aberdeenshire has to offer, including Balmoral Castle, seasonal home to the Royal Family. Aberdeen plays a part in the oil and gas industry forming a land base for the North Sea oil rigs, however don’t be deceived by what you may find here – the city has won the ‘Britain in Bloom’ award a record breaking 13 times, thanks to its incredible number of parks and gardens, and is home to a beautiful stretch of sandy beach. Its nickname the ‘Granite City’ is courtesy of its quarrying history, and the famous 'Granite Mile' (Union Street) is home to many shops. The traditional neighbouring towns of Banff and Macduff sit on either side of the River Deveron, a popular fishing river, and nearby you will find the magnificent Duff House. Other large towns in the area include Peterhead and Fraserburgh, both fishing towns on the north east coast, and the market town of Inverurie.

Product : Sounds like another fantastic time was had by all, and I’m sure you have lots of happy memories from your holiday at this beautiful, quirky castle!

1st August 2015 Great

My family really enjoyed our week at Lickleyhead. The grounds were very pretty - especially the walled garden. The castle was clean and the kitchen was well stocked. The owner was very helpful. There was a bit of a problem with dampness in one of the bathrooms. The great room and dining room are perfect for holding large parties around log fires.

Service rating : Thank you for the great comments, glad we were able to help with the holiday plans and we would be delighted to help with your next Summer break!
Product : Glad to hear you found the castle perfect for your celebrations. Owners are always on site to assist with any minor issues during your stay but we will certainly pass your comments on.

6th November 2014 Excellent

appreciated the well stocked wood and kitchen. Think that the room above the snug has a leak in the chimney as it was too smokey to sleep in some nights when the snug fire was lit

Thank you for your feedback, glad you found both our service and the castle to be excellent!

We did try to catch you by telephone yesterday as we’ve spoken with the owner, who is most grateful for your feedback. She was not aware of an issue and although the chimney is regularly swept and checked, she will certainly investigate further.

We hope we can welcome you back to Scotland again in the future, please don’t hesitate to contact us if we can ever be of help with future plans!

25th August 2014 Excellent

Our family spent a wonderful fortnight at Lickleyhead Castle, thoroughly enjoying exploring historical and cultural sites nearby and farther afield. We were kindly welcomed by the owner upon arrival, who helped us with all practical details and generously stayed in contact during our stay. The kitchen is well equipped and it was a treat to cook with an Aga; bedrooms had fresh linens and towels, which were replaced half-way through our stay; and, we were grateful for the generous supply of wood for the fireplaces. This is an ideal place for a family or group of friends looking for relaxation in a peaceful historical setting. Our young daughter was thrilled to be at Lickleyhead. Many thanks indeed for such a memorable time -- Sam and Ingrid from the United States

5th August 2014 Sad

VERY dirty, a few cobwebs is fine, but this castle looked like no one had knocked down a cobweb or spider nest in at least 10 yrs, MOST of all in desperate need of repair; smell of rotted wood in bathrooms, and mouldy walls in bedroom, all sinks/tubs tile moulded, large water stain walls from leaky roof. We were able to ignore dirty carpets and grimy curtains, peeling paint from walls, etc. But strong rot smell is hard to ignore. Please note this is not our first time renting a castle in Scotland or other countries…this one is neglected, overpriced for its state, and maybe should not be rented out until properly maintained.-
