Restored Fortified Castle, near St Andrews (058)

With contemporary works of art, carvings and wall paintings, it certainly has its own story to tell of heaven and of hell! But the castle itself is just heaven.

On offer is a stunning holiday house venue within a unique castle, which dates back to medieval times, which was rebuilt from a ruin and restored to its former glory incorporating modern twists in 1996. Set above woodland on one side and an agricultural setting on the other, the castle has a large lawn area and an orchard within the 8 acres of private grounds, with a wonderful tree-lined driveway that leads you up to the castle. Above the doorway is a motto in Latin - “Dilexi Decorum Domus Tuae” which translated means – “I have loved, oh lord, thy beauty of the house” and your guests will indeed be bowled over when they see what this castle has to offer.

On entering via the steps at the turreted entrance, is the “Great Hall”, with minstrel’s gallery, which houses the living space and dining area, with kitchen next door. Here you will find a warming wood-burning stove and the beginning of the modern and ancient history of the castle. Spread over 5 floors, the accommodation is below this floor and on the floors above and sleeps up to 12 adults and 2 children. There is also a gallery on the top floor which is a great room to gather in for your guests or for an event. The grounds consist of a herb garden, orchard and open area, open garage and walled viewing tower, with parking by the castle for about 8 cars. This is an amazing fortified tower house which has been lovingly restored in an authentic and contemporary manner and is ideal for family holidays, family occasions and for golfers.

Living Space

Reception rooms

The Great Hall can be found on the main floor level of this tower, which is accessed by steps up into the castle on arrival. Within this large space is housed the dining area and the main seating area by the wood-burning stove. With large windows and a minstrels gallery above it is an impressive room by any standards, but with modern carving and paintings throughout, it has a more modern touch. The compass room, which is a small ante room, is to be found at this level. On the floor above is a smaller sitting room with wide-screen TV, which is ideal for children or just for a more cosy setting. On the top floor is a vast space the length of the building which known as the gallery. It is ideal for hosting a drinks party for your group or an event for up to 30 guests on occasion by request. There are two water closets available for guests.

Kitchen / Dining

Within the Great Hall is housed the dining area and the main seating area by the wood-burning stove. The dining table is ideal for seating between 10/12 people and is a great oak table with dining chairs. According to previous visitors the atmosphere is amazing once you put on with some candles, bring out your feast and add your guests to the mix, which all creates a very special occasion. The kitchen is located next door and is a well equipped kitchen, with traditional AGA. Whilst there is also a separate electric hob as well to cater for all your cooking needs. For less formal dining, there is a table in the kitchen where informal breakfasts or children can be fed. There is a utility room next door and access to a back door, which leads outside to some steps into the castle.

LocationSt Andrews

Perhaps the most well known town in Scotland, St Andrews is world famous! The historic town is home to the oldest  University in Scotland, the distinguished St Andrews, and the town is very much centred around the elegant university buildings. If this wasn’t enough St Andrews is also the renowned Home of Golf. Visitors come from far and wide to experience the links courses, and the Old Course is perhaps the most eminent and prolific. Investigation is a must before visiting, as there is just so much on offer. There is more to discover in the town however; the majestic ruins of the Castle sit atop the headland, jutting into the sea, and just a little further along the coast are the magnificent ruins of what was once the largest Cathedral in Scotland. Climb to the top of St Rule’s Tower for splendid views of the town. The Botanic Gardens are a little piece of paradise; exotic and native species of all kinds are arranged in the glasshouses and 18 acres of mature landscaped gardens.

Kingdom of Fife

Located between the Firth of Tay and the Firth of Forth, the Kingdom of Fife has some of the finest beaches in Scotland. Where there are beaches you will find links golf courses and St Andrews is known the world over as the home of golf. Whilst the Old Course is the championship course, there are beautiful courses everywhere.  The beautiful coastal strip at East Neuk overlooks the Firth of Forth and has many quaint and picturesque fishing villages, like Anstruther, Crail and Pittenweem. the former historical county of Kincardineshire has been included within the boundaries of Fife, and the old county town of Kincardine can be found on the shores of the Firth of Forth. Dunfermline is an ancient Capital of Scotland, and is steeped in history. Seven Kings of Scotland are buried here, and the Palace and Abbey is worth a visit. The historic Royal Burgh of Culross is also a heritage site of interest, and for a family trip out, why not visit Deep Sea World at North Queensferry, which holds a million gallons of water and has one of the longest underwater tunnels in the world to watch the marine life.

Central Scotland

Incorporating the two largest Scottish cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh, Central Scotland is a hive of activities and attractions for visitors, and there will be plenty to entertain you on your trip. For a family outing try Edinburgh Castle, for a day at the beach try the Firth of Forth coastline, for shopping you can’t beat either city centre, or if you just want soaking up some Scottish landscapes try Perthshire’s rolling southern lowlands, and wilderness of its highland. Whatever takes your fancy, the central counties can offer it all. Airports at Edinburgh, Glasgow and Prestwick offer great transportation links for those coming from afar.

Dairsie castle was beautiful, very comfortable and well equipped. The perfect holiday for us (8 adults and 5 children aged 4 - 12). The Aga was so useful and the kitchen very cosy. The grand hall was perfect for our Christmas meal and for games and chatting in front of the fire. The castle was so cosy, even our Australian relatives weren't cold. The owner was lovely and very helpful and welcoming. We hope to stay at the castle again some day and we haven't stopped recommending it to friends and colleagues since we returned.

There could not possibly be any complaints about a stay at Dairsie Castle. The property has been renovated to a fantastic standard. It is very comfortable, spacious, perfectly equipped and clean. The owners can only be thanked by native Scots for restoring one of our most historic buildings to its original state with so much care and skill The Jack clan held their 6th clan gathering in November and hope to return next year to repeat the experience.

Great to hear you found our service professional and friendly, many thanks for taking the time to submit your feedback.

Scotts Castle Holidays

31st July 2013 Great

Dairsie Castle is a dream holiday if you are looking to stay in a castle! However, the owners could make the bedrooms/bathrooms more luxurious so that holiday guests could gush over them. The beds/mattresses in all the bedrooms could be updated. Two of the beds in two of the bedrooms were box springs with just a mattress pad covering them! Ugh, who knew and how embarrassing! The guests that stayed in those beds complained about their sleep everyday! Please, folks at Dairsie, update the beds! The bathrooms are in definite need of updating! Standing showers would be ideal! If there was a way to make the kitchen a little bigger then that should be done as well. It would have been nice to have a longer table in the kitchen, so that, if you had 11 people...then all 11 people could sit in there. You could probably knock out that island that the phone sits on. Maybe move the refrigerator into the laundry room. Finally, as we had elderly people with us...make use of that elevator! My father-in-law never stepped above the kitchen level as he couldn't handle the stairs. I would definitely return to Dairsie someday if it were updated!

Thank you for your message, Dairsie certainly is an authentic castle experience! I’m afraid the elevator is not advertised or included as part of the booking, however we are glad to hear you had an enjoyable holiday. All customer feedback is very important to us and your comments have been passed to the owner of the property.

29th May 2013 Excellent

We had an excellent stay at Dairsie Castle. what a setting! Facilities were all excellent. Very much liked the outdoor games/balls etc which were provided. Enjoyed being met at the property by the owner - it gave it a more personal feel and it was nice to meet the owner and tell them directly what a great weekend we had.

Thank you for your feedback, it is always helpful to gain first-hand experience from our clients and we are so pleased you found the website and booking process helpful!

Fantastic to hear that you enjoyed your holiday at the Dairsie Castle. We shall certainly pass your comments onto the owner and if you would like to re book again through Scotts Castle Holidays, don't forget to claim your loyalty discount next time! (T&C's apply)
