Monumental Castle, in Helensburgh

Looking for a castle on the west coast of Scotland with views overlooking the sea, which can take up to 20 people and within one hour of Glasgow airport? Look no further!

This is a large Victorian Baronial castle situated on a high promontory with stunning views overlooking Loch Long and the Firth of Clyde. Set within four acres of private grounds, the castle dates back to 1852 and was designed by the renowned architect, Alexander “Greek” Thompson. An imposing six storey structure built into the rockface with a central tower, with ground, first and second floors are available on this basis for 16 adults and 4 children. The lower three floors form one apartment, which is available as extra. City life can be located in Glasgow, which is 36 miles away, or head further west to see more hills and lochs. With good reception rooms and a large selection of bedrooms, this is ideal for larger gatherings looking for a big old castle to have fun in.

Property Manager Note: the castle is vulnerable to strong westerly winds and heavy rain, and after heavy downpours, the loch facing single pane sash windows (and stone facings), which by law cannot be replaced with modern windows, can let in a little water. Speaking to the guests afterwards this has not detracted from the enjoyment of the stay as a whole. In summary this is an old castle with a "fading grandeur" air, with the odd draught, which forms part of the charm, rather than a modern hotel version of a castle.

Living Space

Reception rooms

Decorated with a mixture of period and modern furniture, the castle offers quirky accommodation. Entering at ground level, there is the large L-shaped drawing room with open fire, which is ideal for hosting larger gatherings as it is 800 square foot in size. Known as the Music Room, with Greek pillars, with white walls and gold banding, it is a bright space which feels modern, which includes a piano (which is decorative only). Next door is a secondary sitting room, which is completely different in style. This room has traditional dark wood panelled walls with red sofas, red wallpaper and motifs above the doors. With an open fire it is a warm cosy room. Additionally, there is a less formal room, a TV room, with comfortable seating, which is ideal for children.

Kitchen / Dining

The kitchen and the dining room can be found next to each other at the rear of the castle. The kitchen is a small to medium size room which is adequately equipped. The cooking apparatus is a commercial stainless steel range with 7 hobs and 2 double ovens, which is ideal for cooking for up to 20 + people. There is adequate wall and drawer storage and the kitchen table that can seat 4/6 people. The dining room has a robust table and feature chairs which allows for a maximum of 22 people to be dined in this room.

LocationHelensburgh

Built as a holiday resort in the late 18th Century by the local Sir James Colquhoun and named after his wife Helen, Helensburgh became the favoured residence of tycoons and merchants, and at one point, was home to one quarter of Britain’s millionaires! The pleasant Victorian town has a number of attractive parks and gardens to enjoy, and is a tranquil and peaceful setting. The seafront is edged with a long esplanade, and offers a range of shopping and dining facilities. The art deco Hill House, sitting high above the river Clyde and enjoying commanding views is run by the National Trust for Scotland and is cited by many as one of the finest works of the Scottish architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh. The formal gardens at Hermitage Park are worth viewing, and the woodland gardens at Glenarn are home to an extensive collection of rare rhododendrons.

Dunbartonshire

Found to the west of the central belt, the unusually shaped Dunbartonshire is mostly surrounded by water, with the great river Clyde to the south, Loch Long running the west edge, and Loch Lomond bordering a long stretch of the north-east.  The south east of the county meets Greater Glasgow, and the cultural city is always worth a daytrip if staying in the area. Dunbartonshire has many interesting places to offer. The town of Helensburgh is a custom built holiday town, and boasts the NTS’s Hill House; an iconic Charles Rennie Mackintosh architectural masterpiece. Its location on the banks of the river Clyde has made the county town of Dunbarton a popular destination, and the town claims fascinating historical connections, being a seat of great power in Britain until the Viking invasion. The town of Clydebank skirts Greater Glasgow, and is home to the Titan Crane, a 150 foot high cantilever crane which is almost as old as the town itself.  After falling in to disrepair in the 1980’s the crane was refurbished as one of the most unusual tourist attractions in Scotland.

Central Scotland

Incorporating the two largest Scottish cities of Glasgow and Edinburgh, Central Scotland is a hive of activities and attractions for visitors, and there will be plenty to entertain you on your trip. For a family outing try Edinburgh Castle, for a day at the beach try the Firth of Forth coastline, for shopping you can’t beat either city centre, or if you just want soaking up some Scottish landscapes try Perthshire’s rolling southern lowlands, and wilderness of its highland. Whatever takes your fancy, the central counties can offer it all. Airports at Edinburgh, Glasgow and Prestwick offer great transportation links for those coming from afar.

10th April 2016 Excellent

The castle was excellent. Plenty of space so no-one got under anyone's feet but also plenty of room to all get together as a group. The whole atmosphere of the castle was fantastic. Homely but also grand. Lots of rooms and corridors with nooks and crannies perfect for hide and seek. Eating in the big dining room was the perfect way to be in each other's company. Lots of candles and log fires added to the experience. Plus every room was warm and cosy the whole time thanks to some excellent central heating. I would thoroughly recommend it and definitely would go back again.

Product : Sounds like an excellent time was had by all at this magical castle! Totally agree there is lots of room for everyone to spread out here, with plenty to see and do in every corner of the castle. Sounds like some lovely times were spent around the dining table and in front of the open fires - we look forward to hearing from you again in the future when you wish to return!

6th July 2015 Excellent

More than I could have dreamed of. We were thrilled with the castle, the views, the town and townspeople. It was a fabulous vacation with privacy and space for everyone, and wonderful gathering spaces for all of us. The kitchen was beautifully outfitted as were the rooms and bathrooms, and the owner was easy to reach and very helpful. We had a few small issues with power and appliances, but nothing very troublesome or out of the ordinary for a rental. I couldn't be more pleased!

Service rating : Thanks so much for your comments, we do try and be as helpful and prompt as possible when helping with bookings so this is great to hear!

19th June 2015 Excellent

We had a wonderful time at this venue, The views were wonderful, the castle itself was clean, homely and we were welcomed by the housekeeper who we could call upon at any time if we needed to.
The castle is set high overlooking Loch Long, it is in easy reach of Loch Lomond and the Trossachs.
There were 16 people in our party and we booked the Hotel for a week, Self Catering. The facilities were wonderful and the Dinning hall majestic.
I can only rate our stay the property, facilities as wonderful. Thoroughly recommend the property and Scotts Castle Holiday.
The owner although not readily available, kept in touch either by phone, text or the housekeeper to ensure our stay was good. Which it was.
