The pretty, traditional seaside town of North Berwick enjoys sandy beaches and beautiful coastal scenery, along the shores of the Firth of Forth in East Lothian. Rising behind the town is the dramatic Berwick Law. The massive hill is a volcanic plug, and bears the remnants of Iron age settlements and later military buildings. The town is home to the Scottish Seabird Centre, and the Discovery Centre is an entertaining outing, with a number of exhibits. You can watch the bird colonies on Bass Rock through the high tech cameras, or if you would rather, take a boat trip out instead! Nearby is the formidable cliff top Tantallon Castle. Explore the magnificent ruins from underground prison to the top of the tower, where you can enjoy the view across to Bass Rock. Compare Tantallon with the romantic ruins of Direlton Castle and Gardens, visit the longest herbaceous border in the world, in the renowned arts and crafts gardens.
