Description

If you require modern comforts wherever you stay, then it can be found at this beautifully restored Scottish castle, which combines luxury with loveliness.

Located in the Lammermuir Hills to the south of Edinburgh can be found this distinctive Peel Tower, which has been restored in recent years to provide upmarket castle accommodation. With dates that go back to 1350, this is predominantly a 15th century tower with unusual rounded corners and oblong in shape. Its dimensions are 40 foot by 26 foot with thick walls, to a height of 65 foot, with four storeys, all accessed by the turnpike stairs.

The front door is located on the west side of the castle and leads directly into the impressive dining room with kitchen, with under-floor heating and a wood-burning stove, so a warm welcome awaits. The Great Hall is located on the second floor where there is a magnificent drawing room with a feature fireplace, which is a very comfortable place to be settled after a day’s sightseeing or walking. A smaller sitting room is located in the suite on the first floor, and the accommodation is on this floor, the third floor and the fourth floor, with four well-appointed bedrooms and three modern bathrooms. This is a castle that has been made-over to a luxury standard with modern comforts whilst retaining the essence of yesteryear and ancient history. All of which makes this is an ideal base to discover Edinburgh and the Lothian and Borders area, and a perfect retreat to take the time to enjoy the charm of this wonderful castle.

  • Reception Rooms
The elegant drawing room is located on the second floor and takes up the whole floor space. With an impressive feature open fire, with decorated mantle with armorial crests, the room is full of large comfortable sofas and armchairs. The interior decoration is stylish and elegant, and this is very much a room for grown-ups. To the rear of the room is a snug area with desk, library of books and a wood-burning stove, which is ideal for some quiet reflection. There is a small bar area with glasses and a wine fridge. On the floor below is an en-suite sitting room with a comfortable sofa-bed, to the first floor bedroom, between the bedroom and the bathroom.

    Kitchen & Dining
On entering the castle, you are led into the large expansive dining room with kitchen. Whilst the walls are thick, it is not a vaulted room and there is plenty of headroom. The dining area houses an impressive large wooden table with matching chairs, which can seat up to 10 people in great comfort. This room has under-floor heating and a wood-burning stove, so should be a very warm room, and with this heat is very pet friendly. The kitchen area has a substantial range-master cooker with 5 gas hobs and an electric double oven. There is plenty of storage for dry goods and refrigerated items. Outside of the castle is a building that houses a laundry room, where you will find the washing machine and tumble dryer.

  • Set within 2 acres of grounds, the castle is surrounded by a lawn and accesses a private garden area, which is a former walled vegetable and decorative garden. Beyond this is a working farm and a private house, but there is good privacy with the surrounding trees. Positioned on a hill, south of the Lammermuir Hills, it is in a rural setting between Haddington and Duns, 44 miles from Edinburgh airport. Edinburgh is 35 miles away, with the historic Edinburgh Castle a highlight. Duns, which is 10 miles away, is the nearest place where you can find a supermarket, hotels and pubs.

This area is perfect for walkers with the Southern Upland Way in the vicinity and great access to the Lammermuirs. Golf courses are plentiful in the East Lothian area, with championship courses at Gullane and North Berwick. This is the ideal venue for golfing break or just to gather a group of friends in a stunning castle environment with an emphasis on quality.
