Description

Step back in time in this seventeenth century tower house, where you can be lord (or lady) of all you survey in your very own Scottish castle for a week or weekend.

Built as a fortified Laird’s house, to an L-plan design, this impressive stand-alone seventeenth century tower house is located in a rolling countryside setting with outstanding views across the Glenkens. Particular castle-like features include the winding turnpike stairs, walls that are four foot thick and the large Inglenook fireplace in the first floor Great Hall. Over the door is a panel bearing the arms of MacLellan and Gordon, with the date of 1648, when the tower house was built. The annexe section was added at a later date.

On entering at ground floor level is the beautiful traditional country kitchen with dining area, making this room the hub of the castle. On the first floor, there is the Great Hall, with inglenook fireplace and open fire, comfortable seating and a TV. The bedrooms and bathrooms can be found elsewhere, with one on the first floor of the annexe section, whilst the rest of the accommodation is located on the second and third floors of the castle section. There is parking available to the side and rear of the castle. Weddings are currently not allowed, except for groups of 9 who are using the castle on a normal booking basis. This is an ideal base to have a family holiday to discover Dumfries and Galloway area and be part of the history of this castle.

With a wooden floor and  beamed low ceiling there is an authentic atmosphere of bygone times, whilst today’s modern needs are catered for with a TV and a broadband connection.

    Kitchen & Dining
At ground level is a beautiful traditional country kitchen with dining area. The kitchen has an AGA and an electric oven, grill and hob for the cooking requirements, with a microwave, large fridge freezer and dishwasher. There is a table which can seat up to 10 people comfortably, allowing for fine feasts or simple suppers in some style.

Beyond the covered rear porch in the annexe section, there is a utility area with a washing machine and tumble dryer available.

This house is perfect for our group when we make our annual visit, 14 people has been our largest group, we faced no challenges and enjoyed our stay immensely. It is a very cosy and comfortable house of generous size, exactly as the photos show. We would not hesitate to recommend it!

Pleased to hear you had another great time and we look forward to welcoming you back again next year.

Always well administered, deposits received back quickly.

Thanks for the feedback

The property was well prepared and all in order, warm on arrival (and this was February). The castle is cleverly designed inside with comfortable cooking and eating, arrangements, the great hall made a super place for the family to relax together, and the bedrooms and bathrooms provided all wee expected and needed.

Sounds like you had a great time at the castle, I'll make sure the owner receives your feedback.

Booking this holiday was easy despite a hiccough with the property owners but this was resolved by Scott's Castles as swiftly as they could.

Thanks for your feedback, we look forward to welcoming you back in the future

Lovely spacious old property, but had to do a bit of our own cleaning (eg the garden furniture was filthy, but we cleaned it up, and the barbecue was too dirty for us to use. (Obviously the owners didn't expect the weather in Scotland to be that good that we could sit outside soaking up the sun all day!) The housekeeper was very friendly and polite.

Thanks for leaving feedback, the housekeeper would have been happy to deal with these small items for you, but I'll pass the comments on so they can ensure they're not missed again. Look forward to welcoming you back to Scotts in the future

Are at the end of the phone if any queries or issues in relation to their website and payments. Would have given them five stars except they have increased the time for receiving back the good housing keeping deposit, it now takes over one full week to be released.

So glad we were able to help. The bond is held for a full 7 days (although we are always happy to ask owners for an early return) unfortunately we have no control over the receiving banks processing time, apologies this took a little longer than usual.

A delightful house but now needs some fairly extensive repairs. This fact did not in any way detract from our enjoyment. It has first class facilities and very helpful caretaking staff in a cottage across the lane

The owners will be delighted to hear you enjoyed yourselves. Their caretakers really do bend over backwards to help guests which makes all the difference we find. They'll both appreciate your kind words which we'll be sure to pass on.

Delightful staff and always prompt help

Thank you!

We've been holidaying in Scotland for 30 consecutive years and without doubt this house is the best property we have stayed in - spacious, peaceful/quiet, excellent amenities and full of character (not to mention the full size snooker table). We were a party of 11; the dining kitchen was of decent size for us all, as was the dining room, add 2 lounges/sitting rooms, large entrance hall & 11 bedrooms and you're set for an excellent holiday. The recent addition of a shower room was a great boost. All in all, excellent accommodation with a very helpful housekeeper who welcomed us on arrival, showed us around and was always available to help. The fact we had no rain (or midges) helped make our holiday, but I would recommend the house if you're a large party looking for special accommodation in the New Galloway area and don't mind having to use transport whenever you leave the property (it's the best part of a mile to the nearest road).

Sounds like you had a super time, I've passed your comments onto the owner, who I'm sure will be glad you had such an enjoyable trip, until next time...

It was easy, both on-line and on the phone. The staff were always pleasant & helpful.

Thanks so much, we look forward to welcoming you back in Scotts

Great house and website doesn't do it justice

Delighted you had a good holiday. I've taken on board your comments over more images showing the areas above the main lounge and other areas and will see if we can get more added to the website. Nice to hear you thought the bedrooms were all a great size and there was plenty of room with the two smaller lounges and main area downstairs for the whole group to enjoy without feeling you were on top of each other.  Hopefully we might welcome you back another time!

Nothing has been too much trouble for the staff at Scotts castles
A pleasure to deal with
Thanks again

Always a pleasure helping customers with their holiday bookings, particularly returning guests!

First class property a bit tired in places, but the experience was not diminished in any way. Actually thought that by putting double beds in and changing the dining table, the property accommodate 22 people.

Thanks so much, glad to hear you rated the property as excellent and we hope you all have lots of great memories from the get together.

Booking was very good, but had to wait too long to be told if some of my additional requests were ok.

Many thanks for the feedback for our service, apologies the owners of this property were away themselves the week leading up to your stay but we’re glad we managed to catch up with them for you before the holiday to finalise the arrangements for a few extra ‘non-standard’ requests your party had raised.

We had a wonderful time staying at the house. The gardens and grounds are stunning and the house itself is full of character and charm. The kitchen is exceptionally well equipped and the bedrooms are all beautifully decorated and have a lovely homely feel to them, despite the grandeur of the house.

Many thanks for your feedback and we are delighted to hear that you had a fantastic holiday, we bet you have many special memories to hold onto! It sounds like Barscobe House was just what you wanted and needed for such a special break.

Our guests had a fabulous time and we cannot recommend the house and those who look after it highly enough. Such a lovely warm welcome and a most memorable break.

Thank you so much for the lovely comments, glad we were able to help with your holiday plans for a memorable get together!
