With a backdrop of the Cairngorms and views over the Spey valley to the front, this luxurious Highland retreat also has its own golf course to add to the beauty of the place.

This former sporting lodge has been beautifully restored and upgraded in 2016 to become one of the premier luxury holiday houses in Scotland. Occupying a prominent site within the Cairngorm National Park and overlooking the river Spey, it is surrounded by woodlands and a private golf course to the front of the house. If you are looking for a holiday (house) of your lifetime in Scotland, then this is hard to beat.

What used to be a set of smaller reception rooms to the front is now the expansive impressive drawing room which has the “wow factor” that you and your guests will enjoy, whether in black tie or plus two’s. Beyond is the ideal sitting room to be less formal and chill out in, which then leads to the amazing dining room, with wooden beams and impressive chandeliers. The kitchen is fully modernised and extremely well equipped and catering for a large group is made very pleasurable indeed. The accommodation consists of a bedroom with en-suite bathroom on the ground floor, with the remaining bedrooms and bathrooms located on the first floor, to the front and the back of the house. The emphasis has been on style throughout, and the high-end quality shown in the bathrooms are particularly pleasing.

Approached through stone entrance gates, the drive is flanked by mature woodlands on either side, before opening out into attractive grounds, which include a fully maintained '9-hole' golf course and a tennis court. With a sleeper train service from London to Kingussie, access could not be easier by train, air or by road. Behind the house is a separate bothy (small cottage) which can be made available for those bringing a cook or additional staff. It is not let separately and is only available by arrangement.

  • Reception Rooms
At the front of the house is the impressive drawing room, with fine chandeliers and comfortable sofas, with wonderful views out to the front over the golf course and Spey valley. In fact this room is so large it has open fires at each end of the room, and is an ideal room for socialising. Beyond is a sitting room with TV to the side of the house, which has sofas, tables and comfortable seating. Above inscribed in the wooden lintel is a quote from the Poems of Ossian, which reads: Tell him that we are mighty in war; that the ghosts of our foes are many. All stirring stuff! At the side entrance there is a small reception hall with a wood-burning stove. To the rear of the house, there is a separate access to a cloakroom, boot-room and drying room, which then takes you back into the house, which means that those with wet boots can take them off here and get them dried.

    Kitchen & Dining
To the side of the house is a very impressive dining room with hanging chandeliers, fine dining table and chairs, with a floor made from Caithness stone. In the summer months, access to the decking area may be more suitable for al fresco dining. Next door is the large impressive modern kitchen, with a variety of cooking appliances, with Miele induction hobs, electric double ovens and an electric 5-door AGA. There is plenty of cooking capacity as well as storage for dry and chilled items. Beyond is a utility room, a cloakroom and a drying room.

This place was amazing. I feel like the pictures do not do it justice. When they said they had a private golf course, I expected something very basic. The course was legit. I was wonderful that our whole family (good golfers and bad golfers) could enjoy it. The house was warm and welcoming. The grounds were just beautiful. We traveled from Chicago, and the house and grounds were everything we were hoping for in our Scotland experience. We had several children with us, and they enjoyed the house and grounds as well.
Willy the grounds keeper was very friendly and helpful. The greens keeper was AWESOME! My husband lost his wedding ring on the golf course and the greens keeper got a medal detector and FOUND IT! It was such a kind act. I highly recommend Old Milton, especially for large groups. I don't know when we will return to Scotland, but if we do, I'd love to stay here again.

This is a lovely story and you're right, sometimes the pictures just don't do it justice. However your honest feedback will, I'm sure, be useful when conveying to other potential guests how stunning this property actually is. We'll look forward to welcoming you back one day!

Everyone was very friendly and helpful. We were traveling from Chicago and had never been to Scotland, so we had several questions. They were very helpful and got back to us right away.

When travelling so far it's always helpful to have someone physical to speak to which is why we're on the end of the phone to help when needed. So pleased to hear you found our service helpful and thank you for rating us so highly.

The house was so much more than we anticipated. The interior was very well built and absolutely beautiful with every detail thought through and executed well. We could not have been more please with the beauty of the interior, the well manicured grounds and the well stocked and appointed kitchen. Upon arrival we were very please to see each fire laid with wood ready to be lit and the wood bin well stocked. The staff we encountered, Willie, was a delight and their friend Alan could not have been more welcoming. We did not want to leave and I hope that I will return again to experience its beauty.

We are delighted that you found the house and grounds beautiful, it sounds like you had an excellent time overall and had everything you needed onsite. Totally agree it’s always nice to be welcomed by a warm fire. Your comments will be most appreciated by the staff onsite who will be very pleased you had such a wonderful time and that is was more than you had anticipated. Thanks again your feedback and we hope to welcome you back in the future to this luxury venue.

Everyone that I spoke to at SCH was well informed and most pleasant. They responded to my questions quickly and thoroughly. I will definitely use them again to book stays in the UK.

So pleased to hear your review, we’re always happy to go the extra mile and it’s great to know our guests feel they’re well looked after. We also offer a loyalty discount so if you visit Scotland again in the future be sure to mention your last visit and we’ll get this applied for you. Thanks very much for your comments.
