Description

Speed bonny boat like a bird on a wing over the sea to Skye. Whilst Bonnie Prince Charlie fled in a hurry, you can choose how long you stay here on the Isle of Skye

Positioned on the northwest section of the Isle of Skye, at the end of a single track road past a working farm, is this delightful large holiday home, which enjoys stunning views across the loch to Dunvegan Castle. Formerly the dower house to the castle, it is set in 3 acres of its own land, at the end of a peninsula, in open coastal countryside, and is very much a family home type of accommodation. Within, the main living space provides a kitchen, dining and a seating area in a large open plan design. Beyond is a sitting room and music room, whilst on the floors above are a games room with table tennis table and a library area. The property sleeps 12 people comfortably in 6 bedrooms, spread over the first and second floors.

There are enclosed grounds to the front and adequate parking to the side and rear. Outside, is a front lawn that overlooks the loch to the jetty at Dunvegan and the castle itself. This is a comfortable home-from-home holiday house with a relaxed atmosphere, which is ideal for families to get-together to enjoy quality time with each other and explore the island and its heritage. What better place to find breathtaking scenery, stunning landscapes or just take a delightful walk along the shoreline hoping to spy an otter. Indeed, this is truly a special place to go on holiday.

  • Reception Rooms
Entering at the front entrance takes you straight in to the large open-plan living space that combines, kitchen, dining and living space. This room has the front view across the sea loch in front over to Dunvegan, and the living space in front of the wood-burning stove with leather chesterfield sofas and assorted chairs, makes this room the hub of the house. There is a main sitting room to the rear of the house, which is a modern bright room with TV, sofa and chairs, but unusually it is not necessarily the principal reception space. Next is the reception hall, which combines access to the stairs with the “music room” with a piano and a space to play music. The piano is not tuned on a regular basis, and is more a decorative item than a functional playing piano, guests are welcome to play it but for those wishing to arrange a musical event, then the provision of a professional keyboard may be more appropriate.  On the first floor there is a small games room with a table tennis table and table football table.

    Kitchen & Dining
This large open-plan kitchen/dining room, with front view across the sea loch to Dunvegan, is the hub of the house. The kitchen area is all about space and this extends to the dining section, which consists of a large pine table and matching chairs that can seat up to 12 people. As mentioned earlier there is also a utility room with washing machine and tumble dryer.

  • Accommodation is provided for a group of 12 adults in 6 bedrooms with 2 bathrooms and 1 shower-room, as follows:

    • 3 Double Bedroom/s With Shared Bathroom
    • 3 Twin Bedroom/s With Shared Bathroom

Ground floor - shower room, with shower cabinet, w.c and wash hand basin.

First floor – room 1, double room, with double bed; bathroom, with bath with shower attachment, separate shower cabinet, w.c and two wash hand basins; room 2, twin room, with two single beds; room 3, twin room, with two single beds

Second floor – room 4, twin room, with two single beds; room 5, double room, with double bed; bathroom, with bath with shower attachment, separate shower cabinet, w.c and wash hand basin; room 6, double room, with double bed; w.c, with w.c and wash hand basin.

  • Set in 3 acres of its own land at the end of a peninsula in open coastal countryside, including a front lawn. Located on the north west section of the Isle of Skye, 50 miles from Kyle of Lochalsh and 3.5 miles from Dunvegan. It is in a rural setting beside a working farm overlooking Loch Dunvegan and Dunvegan Castle beyond. There is a general store and some hotels in Dunvegan, otherwise the main shopping location is in Portree, which is 25 miles away. It is ideally located for water based activities, with both sea and river fishing being available locally. Boat trips for whale and dolphin watching are also available. Isle of Skye has a 9-hole golf course, and the Talisker Distillery is the local distillery.

All in all the size house was perfect for our large family reunion. The beds were comfortable.
However the furniture in the dining area and the sitting areas was inadequate, very shabby and uncomfortable. Many of the kitchen chairs were falling apart. We had to repair the bracing on some of them.
Kitchen utensils, saucepans etc should be replaced. Refrigerators & freezer could be larger for larger groups. The house is quite far out so we were doing a lot of cooking instead of eating out. Cooking was a challenge.

We’ve just had a chat with the owner, Clare, and she wanted us to say a huge thanks for giving her nearly top marks and most importantly glad to hear you had a great holiday.

In relation to your other comments, the property was last inspected in February and the kitchen chairs were all solid but the housekeeper has now been asked to check them again. There have been incidents where children of previous guests have been a little too rambunctious with the furniture which caused issues, but they’ve all since been resolved. As far as storage goes, it’s considered more than acceptable for a property of this size to provide two fridges and a freezer for a group of 12, but sorry if you felt this wasn’t enough. Certainly, properties accommodating groups of 12 on the Isle of Skye are unique in their rarity and we hope we’ve described this holiday home to do ‘exactly what it says on the tin’, marketing it as a delightful family home rather than something modern and pristine. Clare hopes to welcome you again next time you plan a trip to this beautiful part of Scotland and thanks you again for your helpful feedback.

The booking went smoothly from start to finish.

Absolutely wonderful property which we all really enjoyed. However, we did have a few problems...
1) one of the beds collapsed whilst my pregnant sister was sleeping in it (even pregnant she is not very big) and it looked as if a poor repair had been attempted in the past.
2) the kitchen chairs kept falling apart, again my very small niece ended up on the floor one day after a rather dramatic collapse.
Fortunately none were injured but did get rather a shock.

Oh dear, I'm glad to hear your sister was alright. Having passed this feedback onto the owner she confirmed the bed had been jumped on by some children earlier in the year who had dislodged some slats but those had been repaired and reinforced. The housekeeper has since reviewed the damage and taken appropriate measures. Many thanks for your feedback and glad to hear you had a wonderful time. Hopefully, we'll be able to welcome you back another year!

Great to have someone easily contactable by phone when things aren't working so well on the internet!

Lovely house and very well equipped

We love it when guests give our properties the full five star thumbs up!

Very friendly and helpful, but late in sending reminder emails for payments due

Oh dear! Our payment reminder emails are automated so not quite sure what happened there. We try to keep human error down to a minimum by automating things like that so really sorry for whatever reason they didn't seem to reach you. Hopefully we'll get the opportunity to 'wow' you, next time you book.

Comfortable lodge, well equipped. Warm & cozy with exceptional views. Enjoyed our stay very much over Christmas 2016.

Could do with additional comfortable seating; number of chairs broken. Exterior and garden area much in need of attention. Damp/mould in two rooms internally.

Thank you for your feedback and your email, and this has been forwarded to the owner and a maintenance plan for the house is scheduled in 2017. We were glad to hear that you enjoyed your holiday and look forward to assisting you again in the future.

Easy to book; clear communication throughout. Quick response to queries.

Excellent stay at the Lodge. Perfect for a large group of people. My only request would be to have hand soap at every sink ready for people to use. It really worried me that we didn't have enough soap for everyone and that people weren't washing their hands properly and that we may all get some nasty sickness.
The house is really lovely and enough of everything for everyone. We didn't use the games room at all as the wifi was enough to occupy the kids :0) and kidults. You most certainly need to be organised with food and supplies as it is very remote and not like I am used to nipping out for whatever is needed last minute. Great spot for accessing the whole of Skye.

Glad that you found this lovely lodge spacious and well equipped for a large group. The property is let on a self-catered basis but we do appreciate that this beautiful part of Scotland is quite remote so prior to the stay we are always very happy to help with any plans for a grocery delivery or providing details of local shops & restaurants to make life easier!

Hope you enjoyed your holiday on the Isle of Skye :)

A1 service from Scotts Castle Holidays. I would definitely use them again, mostly because my emails were answered really promptly !

Thanks so much for the fantastic feedback regarding our service, so nice to hear you found our team were friendly and gave prompt responses.

We loved our stay at Uiginish, from the minute we got to the house. The surroundings, the sheep, the quietness. Great quality of light everywhere. Couldn't have enough of those greens! And the house itself: beautiful bedrooms, each with its own character and colors, spacious landings on each floor with comfortable seating-- an extra place to read quietly between outdoor activities. And what fun to have a piano! The kitchen well appointed, lots of dishes, and of course the meeting point: a great farm table for family meals and games. Again, great colors everywhere.

We made the most of the island, and had lovely hikes. The house was perfectly located, nearby Dunvegan for shopping but convenient for all the other sights. And the roads quiet enough to calm our qualms about left-side driving!
The weather was quite good, the occasional rain not a problem. And no midges!
Now back in the summer furnace of Washington, we miss your cool weather.
Scottscastle was very helpful in suggesting restaurants and other pointers.

Great to see you rated the holiday excellent, many thanks for your comments.

We found the spaciousness of the rooms and the tall ceilings helped all of us to feel relaxed. The owners have certainly put a lot of effort to bring this old home to an exceptionally great comfort level.

The kitchen was well stocked with pots. Dishes, utensils and a great size for our large group.
We only had a small bit of rain so many walks could move forward as planned. The views from the house and all around the island were amazing!

Also we enjoyed the very modern bath/shower rooms and the large laundry room with the washer/dryer and drying rack! They had lots of games and movies to watch too!

Many thanks for your lovely comments, glad that the additional info we provided was helpful with making the plans for your trip. We would be delighted to assist with any future holiday plans, and look forward to hearing from you again!

The facilities of the lodge and gardens are very good. There is plenty of space in both the house and gardens for a large group of adults and children. Sky is a beautiful place in which to holiday.
