Description

This stunning fairytale castle would be a perfect getaway for anyone looking for an authentic historic holiday

In continuous occupation since it was built in 1545, this is a fine example of a 16th century Z-plan tower house with a distinctive feature pepper-pot turret. With a red sandstone finish and a pink-wash exterior, the reddish hue seems to change colour whilst you are there. Particular castle-like features include the gun-loops and shot-holes, as well as the vaulted entrance and Great Hall. Set in open countryside, within 10 acres of grounds, surrounded by lawns and mature woodland, the castle is accessible by a drive on each side. On entering, the corridor takes you to a vaulted entrance hall, with a games room off it. Beyond, the rooms are more traditional, and there is a dining room that has the capacity for up to 14 people, a breakfasting room, utility room and a country style kitchen.

On the first floor, there is a Great Hall which is the large drawing room, a sitting room, a TV room, a small libary and the first bedroom and shower room. The majority of the bedrooms and bathrooms are to be found on the second floor. Also available is an eco-friendly (with no added chemicals) rustic wooden barrel hot tub, heated by a wood burning stove. There is plenty of parking to the front and side of the castle. Weddings are currently not allowed, except for groups of 14 who are using the castle on a normal booking basis. Two dogs are allowed, at ground level only. This is an ideal large holiday home to have a family holiday to discover the Angus and Tayside area and enjoy being king or queen of this castle.

  • Reception Rooms
Entering this castle via the tower section takes you into the oldest part of the castle. If those stone walls could talk they would have some tall tales to tell. This takes you through the stone-clad vaulted entrance hall, as well as the vaulted games room with its table football table and small fold-able pool table. Whilst the kitchen and dining room are beyond, the reception rooms are to be found on the first floor. The Great Hall is the drawing room with comfortable seating at each end of the room, with one working open fire. A small library is located in the corner turret. The sitting room is next door, which is another large room and this is where you will relax in cosy surrounds by the wood-burning stove with the TV on. Additionally there is a smaller room with TV, which may be more suitable for children.

    Kitchen & Dining
The dining room is a large room with a selection of sizes of dining tables, which can be added together if required or left as they are. Next door is they large kitchen, which has an old fashioned feel about it, in the country kitchen style. With plenty of cooking capacity with a traditional AGA and two additional electric cookers with 4-ring hobs and ovens, this is a castle that is used to cooking for large numbers. The country table can seat up to 6 in the kitchen or you can choose the breakfast room next door, which can dine your group in a less formal environment. There is a utility room next door. There is a side door which may be easier to deliver your foodstuffs from car to kitchen.

We stayed in the Castle and loved it. The castle is very old but well equipped, warm and comfortable and the owners were very welcoming. There was the odd technical issue in such an old buiIdling but this did not stop us from having an enjoyable weekend. They are dog friendly which is also fantastic. Would highly recommend this venue to anyone wanting a special stay in a real castle!

So glad to hear you enjoyed your 'castle experience'. The owners are super helpful and are always as accommodating as they can be. They're hoping you'll return for another visit!

Have used Scotts Castles before and would do so again. Staff are responsive and helpful, and we have always been offered a property that suits us. We are a large group that travels with several dogs and have built up a reputation for treating properties well and the staff at Scott Castles are aware of this and are very helpful in asking owners to accommodate a larger than usual group of dogs. We are delighted with the service we receive, thank you.

Thank you for your lovely comments. It means a lot to the team that their hard work is rewarded with good customer feedback. It goes without saying they're looking forward to helping you with the next trip!

Had this Castle in Arbroath for a three day weekend and what a great experience. Built in the 1500s and now tastefully renovated and fully equipped for large groups, the castle is a unique and great experience and caters for around 16 people so great for a family get together or a big weekend with friends. Beds were super comfortable and the gardens and surrounds are just lovely. A short drive into Arbroath for nice cafes and restaurants and lots to see and do in the nearby areas. Highly recommended and would love to return.

Ticket all the boxes - was brilliant for family gathering ages 6 to 70 well equipped - owners explained everything and took time and effort to show us round - shame couldn't move the castle round country as like to go somewhere different each year

Great to hear this authentic castle ticked all of the boxes for your family gathering! We hope to be of help with future trips, please don't hesitate to get back in touch.

Overall service was good paperwork & contact was very efficient - only reason didn't give 5 stars was good house keeping deposit was due to be returned in 7 days and it was nearer 14

Great to hear you found our service efficient. Sorry if you missed this information on your paperwork but we do notify all guests that when a Good Housekeeping deposit is paid by cheque, this sometimes may take longer to return. We do offer card payment methods which allow for immediate return which may be helpful for future reference.

The establishment was well excited with a friendly welding feel. As we had previously communicated with the owners handover was simple and straight forward.

So glad to hear you enjoyed your holiday at this beautiful castle, and that you had a friendly welcome from the owners. If we can help with any future plans for another get together please don't hesitate to get back in touch with us!

Didn't find that they were able to answer questions timeously. Felt it was a struggle to get an answer to a basic question or request for information. This has no reflection on the venu we visited.

Many thanks for your feedback, for any additional information above what is listed on the website, we are always very happy to help where we can as between our property department and the sales team we have all either visited or stayed in our properties. However for questions relating to a specific facility at the property we may sometimes just need to contact the owner on your behalf to clarify as they are often on site themselves so best placed to answer any details!

John and sue were really friendly and welcoming. The castle was very homely. Surprisingly warm for such a large place. Kids and our dog lived running around outside. Would definitely go back in the future.
