Description

Voted one of the ten best castles in Britain by The Independent on Sunday, you won't want to miss the chance to stay at this unique destination.

In the centre of Banffshire, known for its Whisky Distilleries, Fishing, Castles and some of the most outstanding coastline in the world, you will find this charming castle located in 40 acres of grounds and gardens.

The interior of the 16th Century Castle is sympathetically furnished with an eclectic collection of art and antiques throughout. The previous Laird was an Art Dealer and his collection is very much part of what makes the Castle so special. The house is still the main family home, who move to a service wing when guests are staying and are very happy to personally talk through the history of the Castle with anyone who may be interested.

There are plenty of reception rooms for guests to escape to, including the impressive Great Hall, with its distinctive Painted Ceiling, the Drawing Room, the Billiards Room, the Chapel and the Vaulted Dining Room.

There is an infinity pool (unheated) for swimming and an external Pavilion that can be used for games on a wet day or for meetings, events or parties.

The Estate has its own fold of Highland Cows and a small muster of Peacocks.

  • Reception Rooms
The Great Hall is the central reception room with an open fire, panelling, medieval painted ceiling and three window seats looking out to the front Lawns and swimming pool. This is also where you will find the grand piano and there is enough room to dance a Scottish reel. There are sofas and comfy chairs arranged around the fire, and if you prefer to eat upstairs for any of your meals, we can arrange to have a table brought up (to seat 12 guests only) on request at any time of year except the festive period when the Christmas tree is put up. If operating on a tight turnover there may be an additional charge to cover the cost of bringing in additional staff to help move the furniture around. Always best to check at the point of booking.

The Drawing Room gets plenty of morning light through its Georgian windows, it also has a wood burning fire to keep to you warm in the evenings if you want to relax in front of the TV or enjoy some of the board games on offer.

The Library has an extensive collection of Art History Books and is used as a bedroom when there are 14 guests. When catering for fewer guests it can be reverted back to a Library.

    Kitchen & Dining
On the Ground Floor is the Breakfast Room, with an extension table large enough for a group of 16, a Billiard Room with wood burning fire, Vaulted Dining Room (seating 6/8) and Chapel. You will also find a fully equipped shower room on this level.  The Kitchen and Breakfast Room are located on ground level, next door to one another.  You’ll find the kitchen well equipped with a commercial electric hob and oven, dishwasher, freestanding freezer with ice maker, commercial fridge, panini maker, coffee maker, microwave, air fryer and bread maker.  The Breakfast room can seat up to sixteen people around a large refectory table that has an extension leaf.

The Pavilion, a heated external games room is across the North Lawns and can be used for bigger parties, ceilidhs, ping pong and Yoga.

  • There are seven bedrooms and eight bathrooms, five bedrooms with en-suite facilities and two bedrooms have a choice from the remaining three stand-alone bathrooms.

    • 1 Double Bedroom/s With Private Bathroom
    • 1 Twin Bedroom/s With Ensuite Bathroom
    • 1 Twin Bedroom/s With Private Bathroom
    • 2 Double Room/s With Ensuite Bathroom
    • 2 Family Room/s With Double Bed & Two Single Beds & Ensuite Facilities

    FIRST FLOOR

Two of the bedrooms contain a French day bed with a trundle bed beneath, so these can be made up as additional one or two single beds in those rooms, one of these ‘suites’ has a gilded sleigh bed and the other one has a four poster emperor size bed. Both have ensuite bathrooms with bath and walk-in showers.

There is an additional bedroom on this floor with a four poster bed and an en-suite shower room.

All three of the bedrooms above are only accessible by way of a medieval spiral stone staircase so we do not recommend them if you have mobility issues.

    RECEPTION FLOOR

On the reception floor we have one double room and a twin room, plus an en-suite double bedroom with a kingsize brass bed, the en-suite bathroom contains a roll top bath and walk in shower.

And finally the Library, which has an en-suite shower room, can be left as a Library with Sofa and easy chairs or as a twin room or a superKing double bed, depending on the make up of your party.

These last four bedrooms are on the main reception floor, all bedrooms are above ground level and only accessible by stairs.

Note: The stone turnpike staircases all have doors onto them, however the main staircase from the ground floor to the reception floor is over a metre wide and is open at the top and bottom.

  • The Castle sits in 40 acres of its own grounds and there are lawns to the front and the rear of the Castle.  There is also a rose garden, a laburnham avenue, a rhododendron tunnel, a burn, a lochan, an orchard within a walled garden and ancient woodland to explore.

The Pavilion, a heated external games room is across the North Lawns and is perfect for all sorts of celebrations and if you choose to bring in caterers they prefer it too as they have more space to work. The owners do not supply linen, formal dining sets etc. but your caterers can deal with all of this.  It can be used for bigger parties, ceilidhs, ping pong and Yoga.

The gardens are very sheltered and there is plenty of outdoor seating. Croquet and Badminton sets are available.

There is also an unheated infinity pool.

Approximately 1 hour drive from Aberdeen Airport

The castle is excellent. Very spacious for the amount of people staying there. Lots of rooms to explore including quirky ones.
The grounds are beautiful and well maintained and the addition of the amazing pavillion in the grounds is perfect for bad weather days.
The castle is well placed for trips to the coast and surrounding area.
The laird was very helpful too.

I'm sure future guests will find your feedback really helpful when deciding if this is the place for their next family holiday. Thanks for sharing and glad you had a 'five star' holiday!
