Located in the heart of the West Country, the beautiful county of Somerset offers miles of coastline, dotted with pretty harbour villages and popular seaside resorts, and acres of peaceful countryside abundant with market towns and protected rural wildlife spots. Perhaps best known for the world famous Glastonbury Festival, the county is also a hidden gem of rural tranquillity.
The wilderness of Exmoor can be found in the west where the heather clad moorland and breath taking coastline offers an abundance of wildlife, fabulous scenery, and a smattering of attractive medieval villages. To the north the Mendip Hills are an Area of Natural Beauty, and the limestone ridge is home to numerous ancient monuments and wildlife habitats, as well as Cheddar Gorge and the Wookey Hole Caves, both popular tourist attractions.
Major settlements include the county town of Taunton which blends history with modernity in its attractive retail centre, and is home to the Taunton Heritage Trail; an exhibition of the town’s turbulent history. Weston-Super-Mare is a traditional seaside resort in the north of the county, boasting a fantastic promenade and recently renovated Grand Pier, home to a number of family attractions.
The county is also known for its fabulous cider, and there are a number of cider farms dotted across the county offering visits and tasting!
