In the other direction just past Kendal there are wonderful historic houses such as Levels Hall which has world class gardens or statuesque Sizergh castle steeped in history with café and gardens and small lake.
Cartmel is also easily accessible and is a very attractive village with the UK's smallest race course which holds meets throughout the year, the ancient 12th century priory and the village has the infamous l'eclume restaurant as well as being home to sticky toffee pudding along with other artisan shops to explore.
