Description

This luxuriously elegant detached Period Lakeland residence occupies an idyllic setting with simply breathtaking views on the banks of the River Rothay close to the famous 'Stepping Stones', within the hamlet of Rydal at the foot of Loughrigg Fell.  This is truly Lakeland luxury at its very best in one of the most romantic setting within the British Isles.

The Property has its origins in the 18th century, and was extended in the Arts & Crafts style in the late 19th century, when it was occupied by Adelaide Wordsworth, the widow of Wiiliam's grandson.  In 1906 Woodrow Wilson, shortly after to become American President, rented it for the summer and fell in love with it.  His words still describe it perfectly today.

"It is most picturesque and delightfully situated, close by Rothay Stream, and under the shadow of Loughrigg".  Wilson speaks of 'exploring the lovely valleys and mountains and coming back to the cottage for tea by the fire'. And at the end of his time there he said "we have had a little cottage all to ourselves in perhaps the most beautiful spot of all".

Wilson's words capture the magic of this setting on the banks of the river with panoramic views towards Wansfell - here the mountains appear so close you can almost reach out and touch them. This Grade ll listed building was obviously designed and built with the views in mind, a rarity in itself for houses of this era. Step inside and see for yourself how this is a perfect place to relax, rejuvenate and spend precious time together. Every detail is taken care of in The Property with effortless blending of period features alongside twenty first century indulgences, combining the most desirable elements of gracious living, contemporary mood and sophistication.

Rydal is one of the most beautiful scenes in the Lake District National Park and provides an ever-changing vista of contours and colours with each season. A short walk will lead you into either the village of Ambleside or a little further passing Rydal Water into Grasmere. If you are feeling more energetic it is a short climb to the amazing views from the top of Loughrigg. Grasmere and Ambleside are stocked with great eateries, tea rooms and shops and if you like picturesque high and low level walks, this is a walker's paradise. Enchanting The Property has all the wonderful ingredients to provide the perfect Lake District holiday, one you will only want to repeat and with a view you will never forget.

Accommodation in detail

Found at the base of Loughrigg Fell in picturesque surroundings, an access only country lane takes you over a bridge and leads alongside the River Rothay to a driveway leading to The Property with ample parking for 4 right outside.  On one side this property boasts a formal and very attractive entrance porch which is now used to access the garden.  We will lead you in another entrance into a slated entrance hall with underfloor heating to warm the toes after a long walk ? bliss. Off this is a luxurious slate wet room, the fifth bathroom facility in the property, also with underfloor heating. From the hall you also enter the large kitchen, with slate flags and granite work surfaces.

The sociable kitchen opens directly into the formal, yet also sociable dining room, perfect for large gatherings or simply playing games or dozing in the rocking chair by the warming open fire. At the front of the house are two stunning reception rooms:  one is the drawing room, also with beautiful and warming open fire, TV, DVD and Cambridge audio cd/DAB/Bluetooth system.   The other is the TV room, with smart TV, DVD and DVD library. Both living rooms are sumptuously furnished and with magnificent splayed bay windows, complete with luxurious window seating, to gaze out at the breath-taking scenery and relax. Finally on the ground floor is a utility area with washing machine and a dryer, also an ideal drying space.

A staircase leads to the first floor the magical array of 4 bedrooms, two king size with en-suite marble monsoon shower rooms at the front of the house, with window seats for you to admire the stunning views and (if you can tear yourself away from the views)  smart TVs.  A further king-size room has a bay window for admiring the scenery and a smart tv.  The fourth bedroom on this floor is a double bedroom with dual aspect.  On the landing is an extensive library of Lake District books for you to plan your next walk or learn about the history of the Lakes. There is a house luxury marble bathroom also on this level with designer double ended bath and monsoon shower facility over the bath.  Upstairs to the exciting twin loft fifth bedroom with sloping eves (so please bear this in mind for tall people). This is a beautiful top floor bedroom with its very own luxury slate bathroom, complete with slipper free standing bath and shower attachment facility.

Outside the lakeland gardens surround the property and have many vantage points, lighting, private water feature, and a raised terrace area equipped with garden furniture for all 10, as well as its own stone folly.  Look out for red deer at dusk in the woods behind the house. We believe this garden and setting will be hard to leave.

Location

This secluded retreat near lovely little Rydal Water boasts strong connections with the poet William Wordsworth, who was inspired by the stunning surroundings. Walks from the door can take in Dove Cottage and Rydal Mount - two of Wordsworth's family homes. The poet's favourite viewpoint can be reached on the western end of the lake, his grandson's widow once lived in The Property and the tranquil surroundings are truly inspirational - not just to writers!  There are many walks - suitable for all abilities - direct from the house.  The location is also only a short distance from the vibrant village of Ambleside and only 5 minutes from the local inn, the Badger Bar. In Ambleside you'll find an interesting range of local shops, tempting delicatessens, traditional Lakeland pubs and top-class restaurants - even a cinema and live music bar. Lake Windermere can also be enjoyed from Waterhead Pier, where ferries depart regularly to Bowness and Lakeside.
