Large Country House, near Shaftesbury (H804MC)

A stay in King John's House is unlikely to ever be forgotten. Spending any time within the walls of this extraordinary, historic, Grade II* house is an utterly unique experience. Full of atmosphere and character, the principal rooms exude a tremendous sense of history with many fine examples of period features. Set in superb grounds on the edge of the charming village of Tollard Royal, the house is perfect for a special celebration be it a 'milestone' birthday, important wedding anniversary or a large family reunion.

Stepping inside the impressive, oak front door, you'll be completely in awe of the spectacular medieval entrance hall, which provides a wonderful reception area with its huge fireplace, long stone-mullioned window and very unusual small 'loophole' window. You can step straight from the 13th century into the 16th century and dine in style in the Tudor panelled dining room. Despite all the reminders of times past, you will not be deprived of modern comforts including a huge, contemporary kitchen, elegant and luxurious beds and up-to-date showers. With so much to take in, you' probably won't be surprised to hear there is even a sauna in a Japanese pagoda for guests to make the most of! An absolutely unbeatable choice of location when you've got something to celebrate.

Please note: King John's House is also available for groups of 15 guests H102 and 8 guests H803

Outside

The beautifully maintained gardens at King John's House are enchanting. Laid out in a formal manner close to the house, further away they blend seamlessly into the surrounding countryside. A long vista at the rear of the house leads the eye past a series of ascending rectangular pools and a fountain to a folly in the far distance. The long, grass pathways passing through avenues of pleached lime and cypress trees are a wonderful way to explore this imaginatively landscaped outdoor space. One of these walkways leads down to the exotic 'Japanese' garden where a pagoda overlooks a series of ornamental ponds containing koi carp and various aquatic features. This is a perfect place to relax with a drink or enjoy a barbecue. Inside the pagoda there's a shower, sauna and some wet-weather seating. Alternatively enjoy a game of croquet on the 'top lawn' near the entrance to the house - croquet set provided. (NB children must be supervised in the grounds at all times).
