Kits House, near Fowey

This property is not available for 2017

This lovely old waterside house was built around 1805 and is in a south facing position beside Mixtow Pill which is about half a mile upstream from Bodinnick village, on the east bank of the River Fowey. Ideal for boating enthusiasts, the house has its own pontoon and many guests bring or hire a small boat during their holiday. The nearest place to eat is The Old Ferry Inn at Bodinnick, where you can also catch the ferry across to Fowey with its many independent shops, cafes and restaurants. The beautiful coves of Lantic and Lansallos Bays are around 2 miles away. The house has literary connections and was made famous by author Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch. Kenneth Grahame who wrote "The Wind in the WiIlows" was also a frequent visitor. And of course Daphne du Maurier lived nearby and was inspired to write by the beautiful natural scenery.

The house is very spacious and has lovely views of the water from all the main rooms. It provides very comfortable and relaxed accommodation for eight people and a baby. There is a large sitting room with a cosy wood-burner and a snug reading corner. French windows lead from the sitting room to the veranda and terrace overlooking the water. On the terrace there is a table for eight and room to barbecue, and steps lead to the house's own pontoon. A spacious and well-equipped open plan kitchen/dining room is ideal for family meals together. There are four bedrooms, many with lovely views and some with pretty glass windows which reflect a myriad of colour.

Perfect for coastal walks along the South of Cornwall, and within easy reach of many idyllic coves including Polkerris, Polridmouth beach and Readymoney Cove. There are larger sandy beaches at Par and Carlyon Bay, and there is a small 16th century fort St Catherine’s’ Castle at the entrance to Fowey harbour. Other local points of interest include the Gribbin head light and two 14th century blockhouses on either side of the estuary opening which were built to protect the village from unwanted ships.

A fantastic range of traditional pubs and bistros are available throughout the town, and a ferry operates crossings from Fowey to both Polruan and Boddinick. The harbour museum and Fowey Maritime Centre offer an insight into the ports history and there are many galleries to choose from. Beside the River Fowey is the 13th century keep of Restormel Castle, where there are fantastic views and a picnic area.

The town is a popular destination for sailing and kayaking, there are plenty of waterside activities available and boat hire which is ideal for a trip up the river. Just two miles from Fowey is Pont, surrounded by picturesque countryside and woodland walks.

Cornwall is the most western part of the South West of England and is a very popular holiday destination with its array of golden sand beaches and dramatic cliff top scenery. The Cornish peninsular is bordered by sea, north, south and west with just one (land based) entrance and exit route over the eastern border to Devon. Traditionally fishing, mining and agriculture were the mainstays of the local economy but tourism has since replaced these. Cornwall boasts thousands of acres of un-spoilt moorland protected as an area of outstanding natural beauty. All year round, the 630 miles of coastal walks (preserved in part by the National Trust and Duchy of Cornwall), are enjoyed by walkers of all ages. Cornwall is known for its mild climate giving rise to the plethora of botanical & specialist gardens like the Eden project, Trelissick and the Lost Gardens of Heligan. By escaping to Cornwall you can thoroughly immerse yourself in the many contrasts that draw visitors year after year. From the picturesque fishing villages steeped in history to the iconic Eden Project, looking to the future. Survey the changing landscape from moorland to the dramatic & varied Cornish coastline. Sample the freshest gourmet offerings from the abundance of local produce or simply find a quiet spot and unwind with a Cornish clotted cream ice-cream! Wherever you choose to hang up your boots, you will never be far from the sea.

South West

England’s peninsula incorporates the counties of Cornwall and Devon, Dorset, Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Bristol. This region is mostly rural so is perfect to escape the everyday hustle and bustle, whether relaxing with the family by the seaside or exploring the wild moors and rugged coastline. The area boasts hundreds of beautiful sandy bays to choose from and fantastic surfing opportunities. The historic cities of Exeter, Bath and Gloucester are definitely worth a visit, and with transport links all the way down to Penzance even the famous Lands End and remote Isles of Scilly can be reached.
