Famous for its iconic cathedral, this city was an important pilgrimage site in the Middle Ages and today much can still be seen of the Roman buildings and medieval cobbled streets. Part of the cathedral experience is the Kings Mile and the ancient ruins of St Augustines Abbey and the St Martins Church. Westgate is the largest surviving gatehouse in England, the on-site museum has historic collections from its past as the city gaol and the Viewpoint looks out across the city. The showpiece gardens are also a starting point for the walk Great Stour Way.

Historic river tours or punting is a great way to view the city and the ghost tours offer a fascinating insight into past legends and tales. Chilham Castle has seasonal open days of the gardens, also tucked within the city are the ruins of a Norman Castle and the Greyfriars Chapel which is the oldest Franciscan building remaining.

Just outside the city is Howletts, an ancient parkland with hundreds of exotic and endangered animals. A great opportunity to view their conservation projects and take part in the feeding. The Heritage Museum and Roman Museums are worth a visit, also the Beaney House of Art & Knowledge. The Marlowe Theatre has a variety of musicals, comedy and plays for children. The Whitefriars Centre is ideal for a shopping day out, and afterwards pop across to the Dane John Gardens for a relaxing walk along the city walls.
