Welcoming Group Retreat, near Lakeside (1314LL)

An adorable group of four Lakeland properties that are all set within a pretty courtyard amongst two acres of grounds, including a natural woodland and ponds in this picturesque and sleepy setting between Coniston Water and Lake Windermere, circumscribed by glorious open countryside.

There are many public footpaths from the door including to the White Hart pub in Bouth and the the Motor Museum/Cafe Ambio at Backbarrow.

Steeped in history this once cobbled courtyard row of cottages, has links to a nearby monastery. The secluded setting and tranquillity is immediately apparent on arrival. Scenic walks are in abundance straight from your doorstep, for the more adventurous is nearby Grizedale Forest, set in the heart of the lakes and a must for all mountain bikers! Wildlife frequent the grounds of Abbots Reading and the beautiful deer are almost becoming tame. A host of great pubs and eateries are close by serving great food and real ales to temp you out.

The group is made up of four individual properties (The Cottage, Mews 1, Mews 2 and The Suite). They offer great accommodation that is ideal if you are travelling to the Lake District with friends or extended family but you are still looking for your own space and privacy. The properties are spacious, quirky and all renovated to a high standard and offer contemporary accommodation throughout whilst retain some period features

The Property are laid out as follows:

The Cottage: Enter into the spacious vaulted kitchen / dining room, which is a lovely room with pretty outlook. A few steps leads up to the living room, again with vaulted ceiling and old oak beams. On this level is the third bathroom facility complete with designer free-standing bath. A staircase leads down to the two bedrooms one of which has a 5'2" wide bed which can be separated into two (2'6") single beds (ideal for children) should you require - so please state when booking. Each bedroom with glazed door to the courtyard and each with en-suite power shower room.

Mews 1: Entrance at the top floor and into the living space; what a relaxing space with vaulted ceiling and original oak beams, leather sofas and views over the courtyard to the countryside beyond. Separate kitchen / dining area also enjoying the beautiful outlook. Downstairs to the two bedrooms and glazed entrance porch leading to the courtyard. One double with en-suite power shower room and one bedroom with a 5'2" wide bed which can be separated into two (2'6") single beds (ideal for children) should you require - so please state when booking. This room also boasts an en-suite power shower room.

Mews 2: Entrance at the top floor and into the living space; with vaulted ceiling and original oak beams, leather sofa and views over the courtyard to the countryside beyond. The kitchen is open plan to the living / dining area and has all you may need. Downstairs there is a romantic double bedroom with glazed door to the courtyard and en-suite power shower over bath.

The Suite: Wander through the courtyard to Abbots Reading Suite with private seating area right outside. Entrance into the living space complete with open plan neat kitchen and seating combining the dining facility. There is the separate double bedroom and power shower room.

Within the courtyard there is parking for up to seven cars. Wifi is available in all the properties except The Suite.


In over an acre of grounds surrounded by blissful scenery you could easily describe the setting here as secluded, yet only a few miles and you are at the very southern tip of Lake Windermere, close to the small hamlet of Lakeside and another wonderfully peaceful setting with both the Lakeside and Swan Hotels serving tempting distractions together with superb leisure club facilities. Lush green countryside, scattered with pretty tarns and embracing all the elegance of the lake and river shores.

Windermere Lake Cruises depart regularly from Lakeside Pier, ferrying passengers the full length of the lake with stops at Bowness and Ambleside - two popular Lake District holiday destinations that you'll love to explore during your stay. Each has a wide range of shops and attractions, so why not do your shopping trip by boat?

Lakeside is home to two fantastic Lake District attractions; the freshwater Lakes Aquarium and one end of the Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway - take a short trip on a traditional steam train. Historic sites such as Scott Park Bobbin Mill, Sizergh Castle, Levens Hall and Holker Hall & Gardens are all within easy reach by car, with no need to navigate through busy tourist areas.

To your north west, you'll approach the landscapes that famously inspired the children's author Beatrix Potter via peaceful country lanes. Her former home can be visited at Hill Top, in the small village of Near Sawrey. Only a mile or so further, and you'll reach the enchanting village of Hawkshead - a wonderful place to while away a day, exploring quaint cobbled streets and a blissfully car-free village centre.

LocationCumbria & The Lake District

The rural county of Cumbria is one of the most attractive in England. It contains the whole of the area known as the Lake District, as well as the northern part of the Pennines mountain range and, somewhat counter-intuitively, a part of the Yorkshire Dales.

The county is replete with attractions for the visitor, its historic heritage ranging from houses and gardens to stone circles and activities ranging from walking and climbing to watersports and fishing. Cumbria's lakes, valleys and fells can loosely be broken down into eight areas.

The North Lakes are the most popular with the serious outdoor enthusiast and the South Lakes draw most of the holidaymakers. The Western Lakes are less busy but still hold some varied attractions and appeal to the walkers as well as families and groups. They are home to England's tallest mountain, known as Scafell Pike.

East Lakes has its quota of mountains too, including the well-known Helvellyn, and is a fairly quiet area. Visit the Eden Valley and North Pennine area for wilderness, castles and rural villages, or perhaps consider North and South Cumbria. In the former we find Hadrian's Wall and the city of Carlisle. In the latter, coastal resorts and the biggest town, Kendal. Finally, the edge of the Yorkshire Dales is a beautiful part of Cumbria with country pubs, easy walking, and a thriving arts scene.
