Stunning Holiday House, near Windermere (1405LL)

Is this the most enviable abode in the country? We think so and so did Harriet Martineau in her 1855 works, A complete guide to the English Lakes.

The Property is still today one of the best located properties in the whole of the Lake District. Set on the edge of Windermere village, from its lofty vantage point the vista is one that makes everybody stop dead in their tracks, from the Coniston Fells to the west, Helvellyn and Fairfield to the east and the entire range of the Langdale and Scafell massif in between, all forming a back drop to Lake Windermere and framed beautifully by the landscaped garden, we are sure this is the most enviable abode in the country!

Built as a Victorian Gentleman's residence this spectacular house is built over three floors with the large lounge and dining room being the focus of the home and offering exceptional social space that is then complemented with a cosy snug/reading room, two kitchens and a breakfast dining room. Outside the mature garden is landscaped into the hillside to offer the best views and the terrace outside the dining room is the ideal spot to sit, with a drink, in the evening to watch the sunset over the lake.

From the cottage there is a choice of walks direct from the door into the Troutbeck valley and the fells beyond. The villages of both Windermere and Bowness are both within a mile from The Property and offer a great selection of bars, restaurants, cafes, and local shops along with a great selection of attractions and activities for all the family.


Accommodation in detail

The front door opens to the hallway with the imposing staircase rising ahead and the lounge leading off to the side. From the moment one enters the lounge they will be captivated by the view from the large picture windows that look out across the valley to Lake Windermere and the mountains beyond. Large sumptuous sofas, surround the open fire and complement the period antique furnishings and rich d?cor. The elegant dining room which shares the magnificent view will no doubt play host, as it has done in the past, to many a special family meal or celebration for years to come. The living accommodation is serviced by two kitchens; the main spacious kitchen with an eye catching pink Aga (no we had never seen one before) and the second breakfast kitchen with a second family dining table. The first floor library offers the best view in the house and is the ideal place to relax with a good book.

The six bedrooms are spread over the first and second floor. The two master bedrooms both with king size bed, one with ensuite shower room, enjoy the views across the valley and are located on the first floor along with a bright double bedroom and a king size bedroom both with luxury ensuite shower room and all complemented by a family bathroom with bath, shower cubicle and WC. Two further bedrooms are located on the second floor; one king size doubles with lake views and one with an ensuite shower room and the final pretty bedroom can be made up as either a superking or twin room (please specify when booking) and is located to the rear of the house. These three rooms are complemented by a family shower room.

The beautifully landscaped, enclosed, garden is a delight with well planted, mature shrubs and trees beautifully framing the view, herbaceous borders and sloping lawn and accompanied by the sound of the babbling beck as it cascades down to the pond.

To the rear of the property there is a utility / boot room with washer and drier, a store for mountain bikes and outdoor gear and the driveway offers parking for up to five cars.


This luxury Windermere holiday home is located just off the heart of Windermere and is only a 5 minute walk from the village centre with its local shops, cafes, restaurants and bars. Also within a 15 minute walk is Bowness-on-Windermere the popular Lake District holiday location, nestling on the eastern shore of Lake Windermere and alive with all the boating activities of Bowness Bay. Enjoy sophisticated shops, tempting cafes, excelled Lake District restaurants and cosy traditional pubs, or stroll to the pier to hop on a Windermere Lake Cruise to Ambleside or Lakeside - a lovely way to explore without even using your car.

Couples, families or groups of friends will find plenty of evening venues to explore - from the cost and traditional 'Hole int Wall' to the trendy Bodega & Sol tapas bar. Families can take their pick from a range of attractions in Bowness; mini golf on the Glebe, the famous World of Beatrix Potter Attraction, the Royalty Cinema and the Old Laundry Theatre.

Enjoying the wider Lake District is simple and easy with a self-catering property in Windermere as your starting point. The famously scenic A591 leads from the nearby Windermere village to Ambleside, Rydal Water and historic Grasmere. It's a breeze to branch off and explore Ullswater, via the dramatic Kirkstone Pass, or Langdale, Hawkshead and Coniston Water.

LocationCumbria & The Lake District

The rural county of Cumbria is one of the most attractive in England. It contains the whole of the area known as the Lake District, as well as the northern part of the Pennines mountain range and, somewhat counter-intuitively, a part of the Yorkshire Dales.

The county is replete with attractions for the visitor, its historic heritage ranging from houses and gardens to stone circles and activities ranging from walking and climbing to watersports and fishing. Cumbria's lakes, valleys and fells can loosely be broken down into eight areas.

The North Lakes are the most popular with the serious outdoor enthusiast and the South Lakes draw most of the holidaymakers. The Western Lakes are less busy but still hold some varied attractions and appeal to the walkers as well as families and groups. They are home to England's tallest mountain, known as Scafell Pike.

East Lakes has its quota of mountains too, including the well-known Helvellyn, and is a fairly quiet area. Visit the Eden Valley and North Pennine area for wilderness, castles and rural villages, or perhaps consider North and South Cumbria. In the former we find Hadrian's Wall and the city of Carlisle. In the latter, coastal resorts and the biggest town, Kendal. Finally, the edge of the Yorkshire Dales is a beautiful part of Cumbria with country pubs, easy walking, and a thriving arts scene.
