Through the ages this was disputed land between England and Wales, today the region is a recognised Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty with stunning scenery along the River Clwyd and the Clwydian Range. Tourism is largely the main industry with foodie enthusiasts being spoilt for choice along the Clwydian Range Food Trail which is a fantastic opportunity to visit delis and meet local producers.
The landscape is mostly heather clad hills and moorland, with ancient churches and ruined medieval castles. The area is rich in sites of historical importance, in particular the North Wales Pilgrimage Way which takes in many abbeys, holy wells and shrines. An impressive castle of the area is Rhuddlan overlooking the River Clwyd and the pretty city of St Asaph has the smallest cathedral in Britain.
The long distance trail Offa’s Dyke passes through Clyyd, this is a great opportunity to take in the changing landscapes and the numerous roman sites. Market towns not to be missed include Denbigh, Conwy, Ruthin and the lovely resort of Llandudno. As well as featuring many collectables and vintage gits, the Afonwen Craft and Antique Centre also has a packed calendar of artistic events and workshops to get involved in. Bodelwyddan Castle has a portrait gallery and museum on site, the woodland walks and deer park are also nice for a stroll with the younger ones.
