Saxmundham is a great base to explore the local wildlife reserves and the heritage coastline, this quiet town has a weekly market and a good range of shops and pubs. Nature lovers will have plenty of trails and reserves to choose from. RSPB Minsmere has a discovery centre and wildlife hides, there are events hosted throughout the year including guided walks, safari tours and nest box making. The Dunwich Heath Coastal Centre is also great for bird watching and home to many rare species, Captain’s Wood is a haven for fallow deer.

At Leiston Abbey are the ruins of a 14th century monastic abbey, and no visit to this area is complete without a trip to Sutton Hoo where a huge Anglo Saxon ship burial is on display, along with the archaeological finds from the site. The National Trust also run events such as guided tours and re-enactments. The Saxstead Green Post Mill is a 13th century corn mill open seasonally to the public, with the machinery still in working order.

There are several seaside resorts within easy reach including Great Yarmouth, Aldeburgh, Southwold and Felixstowe. The Long Shop museum has lots of great hands on activities, industrial exhibits and traction engines.
