Well Appointed Group Retreat, Treharris

Taff Merthyr Lodge is an impressive conversion of the former Managers' Offices of the Taff Merthyr Colliery, set in the valley 18 miles north of Cardiff and about 13 miles from the southern edge of the Brecon Beacons National Park. This lovely house sits on a private lane, with glorious valley views, several footpaths from the grounds and just a short distance from the Taff Trail. This is an excellent location for touring South Wales, the Brecon Beacons and the capital city of Cardiff.

The Lodge is spacious, light and airy, with many original beams, finished to a high specification with quality equipment, all mod cons and a Welcome Hamper of Welsh produce. The entrance hall gives a stunning introduction to this luxurious accommodation. The fully fitted contemporary kitchen includes a large range cooker with gas hob and electric ovens, American style fridge/freezer, microwave and dishwasher, island unit and two bar stools. The adjacent utility room has a washing machine and tumble dryer. The kitchen leads through to the living room, with French doors onto a private patio, dining table and six chairs, two large leather sofas, armchair and footstool, and a dual-sided woodburning stove, between the living room and separate formal dining room seating twelve. The living room is equipped with 50" widescreen TV with basic Sky package, DVD player, CD player, iPod dock and WiFi. A separate Cinema Room has 50" widescreen TV/DVD player with surround sound and two double leather sofas with drinks holders. There is another small sitting room with two leather sofas, books and games. The Games Room has a pool table, dartboard, drinks fridge and bar stools. There is a spacious ground floor double bedroom and stunning en suite bathroom with WC, twin basins, freestanding claw-foot bath with hand shower attachment and wet-room style rainhead shower in one corner. Also on the ground floor is a shower room. Upstairs there are five further bedrooms, one en suite, and a family bathroom. The Master double bedroom is very spacious and an en suite bath/shower room. There are two further double bedrooms, two twin bedrooms and the family bathroom with corner bath and separate shower cubicle. The house has underfloor heating and electric radiatiors, with heating and hot water from geothermal, photovoltaic and solar panels.

Outside, there are two private patio areas, with garden furniture and barbecue, and a separate screened area with 5/6 seater Hot Tub, patio table and chairs, and lovely views down the picturesque valley. The grounds are extensive, including an uncovered pond, small waterfall and a lovely avenue of cherry trees, glorious in springtime. The owners of the property live in a small separate annexe, entirely self-contained, so they are on hand if required but guests retain a very high level of privacy due to the layout of the house and gardens. At the far end of the property are the aviaries where the owner, a renowned falconer, keeps birds of prey, which he is happy to show to guests. The owner's partner is a qualified Spiritual and Energy Healer, and offers healing sessions by arrangement.

The nearby village of Trelewis has a village shop, and there is a pub in Bedlinog, 1.3 miles away; Nelson, 2 miles away has a superarket. There is a visitor centre, Parc Taff Bargoed, 1.5 miles away where fishing can be arranged and walking and cycle routes link up with the Taff Trail. The Summit Centre, with Wales' largest indoor climbing wall, is just half a mile up the valley. Excellent walking throughout the area, pony trekking nearby and the stunning scenery of the Brecon Beacons National Park just a short drive away. The wonderful sights, shops, restaurants, theatres and sporting venues of Wales' capital city are within very easy reach and it is just over 20 miles to the sandy beach and coast path at Penarth. With every luxury, comfort and excellent facilities on site, and so much to see and do in both city and country surroundings, you will be spoilt for choice!

LocationSouth Wales

Although smaller in size than other regions of Wales, this area still has a great selection of historical sites to visit and rolling countryside with a dramatic coastline. Perhaps best known for the impressive Brecon Beacons, this mountain range is very popular for those seeking an activity holiday with something to suit all, from mountain biking and caving to horse riding and star gazing events. The Vale of Glamorgan is worth a visit, with a 9 mile heritage coastal path not to mention the famous Barry Island with its vibrant amusement park which is all only a few miles from Cardiff.

Not just an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the Wye Valley and the Vale of Usk combined can also boast having the most castles per square mile in Britain. In recognition of its revolutionary importance the Blaenavon Industrial Landscape is now a World Heritage Site and has a fascinating collection of ironworks, mines and a national museum.

Cardiff is perfect for a day of shopping and sight-seeing. The varied choice of entertainment ranges from live music venues, guided tours and art events. For a peaceful walk or nature spotting trip then the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal is a beautiful and isolated place to unwind.
