Inviting Big Cottage, near Caersws (FL042WA)

This beautiful 17th century historic house is Grade II* listed and regarded as one of the best examples of an oak timber frame house in the whole of Mid Wales.

The Property is a stunning cottage bursting with character and original features yet with some modern aspects, such as a newly fitted bathroom with large walk-in shower, roll top baths (three of them!), WiFi and flatscreen TVs. Furnished and decorated with a tasteful combination of antiques and stylish furnishings, the cottage sleeps eight guests in four bedrooms.

The large welcoming kitchen has an oil-fired Aga in the inglenook fireplace (operational in the winter only). Please note the AGA cooker is vintage 1952 and not thermostatically controlled. This means it may not get as hot as a modern oven and may be more suited to an experienced AGA user than a novice. The kitchen is fitted with bespoke oak units, fridge, electric cooker, dishwasher, microwave, Welsh dresser and a breakfast table and chairs for six. A separate utility room houses a washing machine and freezer. The magnificent triple aspect drawing room has a flatscreen TV, DVD player, antique furniture, original beams and a large open fire. There is a separate library with sofas, armchairs, a log burning stove in the inglenook fireplace, flatscreen TV and plenty of books. The atmospheric dining room has a dining table and chairs to seat eight.

Upstairs are four large bedrooms and three bathrooms, two of which are en suite. On the first floor is a master bedroom with a king size bed, sofa and some antique furniture; the en suite bathroom has oak panelling, rolltop bath, basin and WC. Also on the first floor is a family suite: a double bedroom and a twin bedroom; these are separate rooms, but have an interconnecting door if required by families with small children. The newly-fitted family bathroom has a rolltop bath, large walk-in shower, basin and WC. The fourth bedroom is on the second floor - a double bedroom with some restricted headroom and oak door leading to an en suite bathroom with bath, washbasin and WC.

The property is set in generous grounds, which are fully enclosed, comprising a large gravelled courtyard with plenty of off-road parking, a large lawn with flower borders and a separate cottage garden packed with colour in the summer months. To the front of the property is an authentic knot garden, which provides a perfect setting for the house. There are two barbecues for guests to use (bring your own charcoal) and garden furniture. Guests at The Property can also enjoy use of a separate garden room located across the courtyard from the main house. This has sofas, seating, a TV for video and DVDs only, and a dart board. This room is not heated and is intended for summer use. The Property is on the corner of two quiet lanes: both are no-through roads, with little passing traffic. The village of Trefeglwys, with its pretty church and a pub which serves food, is within easy walking distance.

LocationCaersws

This small village is located on the River Severn making it an ideal base for picking up one of the many walking routes available locally or enjoying the nearby fishing opportunities. Home to the Mid Wales Arts Centre, this features a large sculpture park and gallery with interesting workshops and various exhibitions. There were two roman forts in the town, sadly today only the remains can be seen however there are extensive ruins to explore at Dolforwyn Castle which has been excavated to reveal the original layout of the keep. Henblas Farm has several mountain biking tracks to choose from and for visitors wishing to practise their swing; the Mid Wales Golf Centre is within walking distance of the town.

For a larger selection of amenities the larger town of Newtown is only 5 miles away, and the Caersws railway is also useful for exploring the wider area of Powys. Points of interest are the nearby Textile Museum and the Robert Owen Museum. The nature reserve at Gregynog Hall is also worth a visit, this ancient parkland is home to a variety of wildlife with marked foot paths across the 750 acre estate.

Mid Wales

This is the go to place for outdoor enthusiasts to make the most of the fantastic walking, riding & cycling opportunities, especially in the Cambrian Mountains National Park. The Ceredigion Coastal Path features numerous trails to choose from depending on how far you wish to travel. Whether for a full walking holiday or just a stroll along the cliffs to a village pub, this unspoilt route is perfect and has views out across the famous Cardigan Bay which is home to the UKs largest pod of dolphins.

Dotted along the Wales-West England border are lots of lovely market towns, many of which have their own castle. This disputed ground has a large number of Roman and Norman medieval fortresses, today some are only ruins or just the earthen works remain however there are plenty which have restored to their former glory and are open to visitors.

Mid Wales also just touches on the edge of the Brecon Beacons, a popular mountain range for exploring caves, forest activities and other more extreme outdoor sports such as rock climbing and abseiling. A number of historic railways mean other regions of Wales are easily accessible for a day trip, and make for an enjoyable way to travel and take in the sights.
