Historic Medieval Castle, near Largs (006)

For a week or weekend you can be king or queen of your very own castle when you book this Medieval castle for the Scottish holiday you have always dreamed of.

This exceptional fifteenth century keep is an ancient stone clad castle, which sits high on a hill, with stunning views over the Firth of Clyde and onto the Isle of Arran. Built in 1442, it fell into disrepair over the centuries and it was restored to its original state in 2001. Furthermore it has been refurbished throughout and it retains an authenticity rarely seen with its stone walls, turnpike stairs and stone flagon floors.

There are very few castles in Scotland that are as authentic as this in structure and in design and anyone booking this castle will know they are getting something completely different. By the very nature of the building due to its age, there are low doorways to encounter and steep stairs, which takes getting used to, but is part of the charm of the castle. If you are a “Game of Thrones” fan or prefer “Wolf Hall”, then this is a venue that takes you back in time. It is an ideal castle to stay in Scotland. For a family holiday with a difference, a golfing group, a special event or an intimate wedding for up to 12 people, this is a castle that everyone will talk about for years to come.

Living Space

Reception rooms

A rustic spiral stone staircase, aged with hundreds of years of use, connects all the five floors. The main reception room is on the first floor, and is the Great Hall, which is the main living space with wood burning stove and seating area, as well as housing the kitchen and dining area. This is a very impressive room with modern touches with the large flat screen TV with cinema sound and under-floor heating. With the fire lit and seating in comfort in one of the leather sofas, you can take in the wooden beamed ceiling, crossed swords on the walls, as well as the hung tapestries. It is like stepping back in time. At ground level, there is a small library, but as it is also a bedroom, it is more likely to be used for accommodation.

Kitchen / Dining

The main reception room is on the first floor, and is the Great Hall, which is the main living space with wood burning stove and seating area, as well as housing the kitchen and dining area. Accessed under a low arch, the kitchen has an AGA with two hobs, two ovens and two warming ovens. A microwave oven and fridge freezer is also available. Stone and slate work space has been created to assist in food preparation. The dining section is in front of the kitchen and there is a pitch pine refectory table, benches and chairs available. This whole room is ideal for hosting medieval banquets and creating amazing atmosphere on any feast that you may wish to have.

The small traditional holiday town of Largs can be found on the west coast of Scotland, overlooking the Firth of Clyde. The town features an attractive Victorian promenade, testament to its historic architectural heritage. To the east of the town you will find the fringes of the Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park, great walking country and abundant with interesting wildlife. The town of Largs is most famous for its dramatic Viking history, and you can learn more on this in the town’s interactive multimedia experience, Vikingar! The site includes swimming facilities and soft play for the tots, so is a real attraction for the whole family. There are two courses in the town for golfers to whet their appetite, and no trip to this neck of the woods would be complete without a visit to the nearby Kelburn Castle and Country Centre. The kids will love the playbarn, secret forest and adventure courses.

Located on the west coast, Ayrshire offers a diversity of landscapes for the discerning traveller. The shores of the Firth of Clyde offer beaches and a range of watersports, and the rolling Galloway Hills to the south offer a haven for nature lovers and walkers. Ayrshire is historically a diverse industrial county, and most famous for its production of the worldwide favourite Scotch Whisky, Johnnie Walker, in the town of Kilmarnock. The namesake town of Ayr is a bustling seaside resort. With its long esplanade and sandy beach it is a popular tourist town. Further north along the coastline the town of Irvine is home to the main site of the Scottish Maritime Museum. Other places of interest in the county include the Ayr suburb of Alloway, birthplace of Scotland’s poet Robert Burns. Ayr Racecourse, which hosts the Scottish Grand National is a great day out. Turnberry Castle claims to be the possible birthplace of Robert the Bruce, and is an interesting historical attraction. Just a ferry trip across the Firth is the Isle of Arran. Boasting geologically diverse High and Lowlands the island has been inhabited since Neolithic times and has a range of attractions with mountain ranges, rolling countryside and sandy beaches, there is a range of things to do here. If you are a golfer, the area offers over 42 courses including three Open Championship links courses at Royal Troon, Prestwick and Turnberry.

Southern Scotland

Stretching across the border with England, and reaching up to the central belt from Glasgow to Edinburgh, the Southern Scotland region is a popular location for short break holidays. Although you may not find the monumental mountain ranges of the Highlands, don’t think that this region lacks the traditional Scottish landscapes. The famous 7Stanes mountain biking routes can be found across the Border counties and Dumfries and Galloway, as there is an abundance of hills, glens and forests to challenge even experienced bikers. The region has plenty of fishing opportunities too, most popular perhaps is the River Tweed, well known for its salmon, and miles of coastline, ideal for walking and bird spotting. Golf can be found in abundance in this area too. For gentler activities, visit the Four Borders Abbeys, magnificent tributes to the religious history of the area, at Kelso, Jedburgh, Dryburgh and Melrose.

we went to Law Castle for a weekend to celebrate a 30th birthday. The property owner was very friendly on our arrival and very helpful. Communication throughout was excellent. The Castle itself was stunning...beautifully and loving restored giving our weekend a great backdrop and really set the scene for our murder mystery night! The property was very clean and tidy with plenty of linen etc and a very well kitted out kitchen and washing facilities - we were only there for a weekend but could have more than comfortably stayed longer. The staircase was a bit tight but that all added to the experience!

We hope we can be of help again in the future, please don't hesitate to contact us again.

17th October 2014 Great

The castle and the landscape was as beautiful as promised. But in the castle there was a couple minor details that was a little inconvenient. There was not a single blankets to use f. ex in the livingroom couch or for that kind of usage. Also no large pieces of pots and pans for cooking for a larger group (12 persons)

Many thanks for your feedback, we try our best to provide a personal yet efficient service here at Scott’s, so we are so pleased that you felt it was excellent.

Sounds like your party had a holiday to remember overall, enjoying the castle and local area. We shall note your comments and pass these on, as any feedback is invaluable to allow room for improvements where possible, to ensure all visitors have the most comfortable stay aswell as an enjoyable one!

We hope to be of help with your plans again in the future.
