16th Century Borders Tower, Moffat (193)

Step back in time to the 1530s in this sixteenth century tower, where you can be king or queen of your very own Scottish castle for a week or weekend.

Built in 1536, this is a fine example of a 16th century Pele Tower House (a strong house), which sits on small hillock by a loch within 5 acres of private grounds. It measures 37 feet by 27 feet, with the walls over 6 feet thick. Particular castle-like features include the shot-holes, as well as the vaulted room at ground level and the Great Hall on the first floor. The castle is associated with the Johnstone clan.

On entering, is the original white washed stone vaulted section of the castle, which houses the kitchen and dining area. On the first floor, there is the Great Hall, with fine inglenook fireplace with wood-burning stove, comfortable seating, wide-screen TV. The room has exposed stone walls on show which are adorned with antique armoury and suits of armour are also on show. There is a double bedroom, twin bedroom and a family bathroom on the second floor, with a further double bedroom with en-suite shower room on the third floor. A summer house and 6-person hot tub overlooks the pond to the rear. Weddings are currently not allowed, except for groups of 6 who are using the castle on a normal booking basis. One dog is allowed, at ground level only. This is an ideal base to have a family holiday to discover the Dumfries and Galloway area and enjoy being king or queen of this castle.

The kitchen/diner is beautifully designed A new kitchen was installed in 2014 into the original vaulted spaceThe oak dining table seats 6The former 'Great Hall' is now a comfortable sitting roomThe first floor 'Great Hall' is a comfortable and atmospheric sitting roomIt has been lovingly restored by the current ownersThis suit of armour stands guard over the stairs

Living Space

Reception rooms

The Great Hall is located on the first floor and is a large space which is now the sitting room, which provides comfortable seating. It is a blend of old and new, with suits of armour on display and a selection of swords and other items adorned on the stone clad walls, whilst it has full central heating, a wood-burning stove, WIFI and a large 60 inch wide-screen TV with DVD player. So today’s visitor can enjoy the modern comforts whilst witnessing what may have been in the 16th century.

Kitchen / Dining

At ground level is the white washed vaulted room, which houses the kitchen and dining area. A new kitchen was installed in 2014 which makes great use of the ample space. In effect it is a traditional country kitchen with an electric oven, grill and hob for the cooking requirements, with a microwave, large fridge freezer and dishwasher. There is an oak table which can seat up to 6 people comfortably, allowing for fine feasts or simple suppers in some style. In the entrance hall, to the rear is a utility space, where there is a tumble dryer (the washing machine is in the kitchen) and an area where one dog can be kept.

The border county of Dumfriesshire offers a diversity of landscapes, from valley to summit, coast to forest, the range of scenes to explore would suit everyone. In the north of the county, near the historical spa town of Moffat, the Devils Beef Tub is a worth trip for hikers. The deep dramatic hollow, formed at the base of four hills is one of the two sources for the River Annan, which runs south through the county to join the Firth of Solway at the town of Annan. The Ae forest is one of the largest in Britain and is home to one of the 7Stane bike trails, a collection of 7 specially designed mountain biking centres dotted throughout the borders. For those looking to soak up the local heritage, the historical country town of Dumfries is famed for its connections with the bard Robert Burns, and his home and museum are worth a look in. On the English border is Gretna Green, the marriage capital of the UK, historically where young English couples eloped to marry, the town still witnesses thousands of marriages every year! The magnificent stately home at Drumlanrig Castle is a fantastic family day out, the house is an exemplary display of renaissance history, the beautiful garden and grounds must be explored, and the kids will be entertained for hours in the adventure playground. For something a little different for the kids, why not step back in time at Dino Park in Carrutherstown!

Dumfries and Galloway

From shores to hills, Dumfries and Galloway is an area of magnificent landscapes, and natural beauty, and a paradise for walkers and cyclists, thanks to the rolling hills, and verdant forests. 200 miles of coastline offer beautiful beaches and seaside towns, and thanks to the Gulf Stream, a unique climate here, a perfect setting for a beach holiday.

Southern Scotland

Stretching across the border with England, and reaching up to the central belt from Glasgow to Edinburgh, the Southern Scotland region is a popular location for short break holidays. Although you may not find the monumental mountain ranges of the Highlands, don’t think that this region lacks the traditional Scottish landscapes. The famous 7Stanes mountain biking routes can be found across the Border counties and Dumfries and Galloway, as there is an abundance of hills, glens and forests to challenge even experienced bikers. The region has plenty of fishing opportunities too, most popular perhaps is the River Tweed, well known for its salmon, and miles of coastline, ideal for walking and bird spotting. Golf can be found in abundance in this area too. For gentler activities, visit the Four Borders Abbeys, magnificent tributes to the religious history of the area, at Kelso, Jedburgh, Dryburgh and Melrose.

2nd November 2015 Excellent

Overall we really enjoyed our stay at Lochhouse Tower. The weather was maybe not the best, but we did get out and about a little. The Tower has all the facilities you could wish for and the artefacts and history make it a fascinating place to stay. The Hot tub is amazing and was a first for us. The only thing we would change would be to make the mattresses on the beds a lot firmer as we found them too soft for our liking and had difficulty getting a restful sleep. This is of course just a subjective opinion as we realise everyones taste is different.

We loved Moffat and the surrounding area and had dinner with friends on the Saturday evening at the "Beef Tub Comfort Grill" within the Buccleuch Arms Hotel and lunch at "The Rumbling' Tum" one lunchtime.

Service rating : Many thanks for the lovely feedback and great to hear you found our booking process helpful. We would be delighted to assist with your next castle holiday!
