Castle-esque Retreat , near Rait (151)

Nestled in a woody glen, this quirky holiday house is to be found in a central location in Scotland with easy access for all your holiday activities.

This is the ideal holiday destination offering value for money in Perthshire for a family or group of friends. This holiday house was built in 2005 close to a monastic building using original material, incorporating the dovecot (doocot) design and has a charm of yesteryear.

On entering there is a large living space with open fire, which houses the comfortable sitting room, which has a minstrel’s gallery above. The dining hall can seat up to 14 people, and is opposite the country style kitchen. With a ramp to the front, there is easy access, with one double bedroom with en-suite bathroom and one twin bedroom with private shower room available on the ground floor. Upstairs via the modern turnpike stairs, there is one twin bedroom, a shower room and a double bedroom, with double doors that opens out to the gallery overlooking the sitting room.

Outside there is a designated area with seating, ideal for the summer months, whilst enjoying the landscape to the front. Further seating is available at the top of the hill for those who wish to enjoy a more panoramic view. This is a charming quirky holiday house with a rustic feel, which is perfect for families, wedding guests (with wedding venues like Fingask Castle and Inchyra House nearby) and holiday-makers to get-together.

Living Space

Reception rooms

The large sitting room is an impressive space with a minstrel’s gallery above. Within there is an open fire, a TV, an upright piano (decorative only), a small antiquated pool table and an assorted mix of comfortable furniture. There is wooden flooring throughout with a carpet at the fireside, and this is a room full of character, which comes alive when it is full of people. With a door at the porch and the front, where there is a concrete ramp for less mobile access. On the floor above there is some landing space with a daybed.

Kitchen / Dining

Access into the house takes you to the L-shaped hallway, which also forms part of the dining hall, where there is a long table with benches on either side which can seat up to 12 people if required. Next door there is a kitchen, which is also accessible by the rear, so allowing for easy unloading of food supplies. This is a simple kitchen set-up, with range cooker with double oven, microwave, fridge freezer, dishwasher, sink and work-space. There is a table in here that you can seat 4 people, which might suit those with children to feed them here. This kitchen is country style functional rather than country style stylish.

LocationRait

Raitt is a village located between Dundee and Perth in the Sidlaw Hills. It is most well known these days for an antique centre, where there are a number of different antique shops within the one community. Perth is nearby and has plenty to offer by way shopping and eating, with a range of opportunities located down and around the High Street. There are also two tranquil and large parks to ramble and picnic, the North and South Inch. Dundee is also nearby. Both Glamis Castle and Scone Palace offer historical day trips.

Perthshire

Perthshire is a natural choice for visitors as geographically it is in the very heart of Scotland. Its popularity is no wonder; with the lush lowland pastures of the south meeting the rugged grandeur of the Highlands, this county is beautifully rich in scenery and magnificent landscapes. The old county of Kinross-shire is now generally considered to be part of this region, and the local council area is now called Perth and Kinross. Kinross sits beside the beautiful Loch Leven, with Lochleven Castle nearby. The central point is the city of Perth, the fair city bustles with life, with the river Tay running through it. The impressive Scone Palace is nearby, which was the crowning place for Scottish Kings. Perthshire is also home to the world famous Gleneagles Hotel and leisure complex. This is also Big Tree Country, with the world's highest hedge at Meikleour, Europe's oldest tree, the widest conifer in Britain, the sole survivor from Shakespeare's Birnam Wood and many more fascinating trees. Why not visit Glenshee and take part in some skiing, or try mountain biking through the many hills and glens. Blair Castle is an impressive site, and with expansive grounds and an adventure playground, will entertain the whole family.

Highlands and Islands

This region takes in Inverness-shire, Ross-shire, Sutherland, Caithness and the islands include the Inner and Outer Hebrides as well as Orkney and the Shetland islands. For spectacular scenery the Highlands of Scotland provides some of the best, with a huge expanse of area full of mountains, lochs and glens full of romance, wildlife and scenic beauty. The heritage of this area includes Culloden, taking the ferry to the Isle of Skye or just taking in one of the many castles like Eilean Donan. There is also an immense range of wildlife to be found.

8th April 2015 Excellent

Another fantastic week at Ladywell Doocot!

The house was clean, tidy and warm. It was also nice to see some upgrading since our last visit.

The weather was much nicer than our last visit, so we made full use of the garden and patio facilities.

We can definitely recommend this country house and its stunning location for 'extended family' holidays, especially if you are including members with poorer mobility, as there is an access ramp, two bedrooms (one with en suite), and a shower room on the ground floor.

Sounds like your family had another fantastic stay in this quirky dovecot! It's great to hear the weather was nice for your stay and you were able to enjoy the lovely outdoor space and gardens. Look forward to hearing from you again!
