Stunning Castle Apartment, near Brechin (024b)

A majestic and historic building lying between the Angus Glens and unspoiled coastline

This outstanding castle apartment sleeps 16 people and can be your home for a group of friends and family for the week or weekend. Set in 1,300 acres of superb landscaped grounds with a deer-park, this impressive castle, built in the 1790s, is a magnificent landmark in the Angus countryside. As castles to stay in Scotland goes, this is a fine example.

This apartment is located on the first and second floor on the west and south facing corner, and is accessed by a separate internal staircase. With a separate dining room and a large sitting room, with an open fire, there is plenty of space for your group. The bedrooms are beautifully furnished, including a four poster bedroom.

The castle has two very spacious apartments (one sleeping 10 and the other sleeping 6) that can be linked together to sleep up to 16 or booked independently to sleep 10 or 6.

A tennis court is available to use, as well as access to areas on this private estate which is not open to the public. This is a wonderful private space and grounds to be based to explore some of the best parts of Scotland within Angus and Aberdeenshire.

Reception rooms

All the rooms are tastefully furnished in keeping with the period of the castle and are brimming with antiques and finery.

There's another smaller open plan sitting room on the floor below connected to a three bedroom apartment which can be closed off to sleep 6, or linked to this main apartment on the second floor to increase numbers to 16.  An internal private stairway connects the two.

The dining room is an elegant room, with a large table that can seat your group in comfort and style, and always looks great in a formal setting with candles. The kitchen is a functional kitchen, with everything you would expect to find, a cooker, microwave, dishwasher and upright fridge freezer. It is adequately equipped and you will a table and chairs in here, so breakfast can be taken in here or less formal dining.

There's a second kitchen attached to the apartment on the first floor which links to this apartment to provide accommodation for 16 guests.  The 3 bedroom apartment on the first floor was rennovated in 2019 and provides modern, comfortable ameneties.

Located in the rural Angus countryside, on the banks of the river South Esk, Brechin once enjoyed city status, thanks to its cathedral. Nowadays it’s recognised as a town, although is often still referred to as a city! The cathedral stands next to a unique and interesting 11th Century round tower, one of only two in Scotland of the style.  The town’s main attraction is its fantastic Caledonian Railway. The heritage steam railway runs a seasonal tourist service from the town’s Victorian Terminal up to the Bridge of Dun. The town has a strong Pictish history, and the Pictavia visitor attraction is an interesting exhibition of this heritage. The centre also has an adventure playground and nature trail for the kids! Golf can be found at the attractive parkland 18 hole Brechin Golf Course.

From pristine sandy beaches, rolling agricultural landscapes and the majestic heather clad hills and lush forests of the Angus Glens, Angus offers a range of breath taking scenery to soak up. Out in the countryside there are many Munros which offer superb walking opportunities or there is some of the best salmon and sea trout fishing in Scotland. The city of Dundee has a vibrant and lively centre; a great family day out, with fantastic shopping facilities! The harbour is home to the Discovery Point Visitor Centre, home to the spectacular ship RRS Discovery. Arbroath is an old fishing port famous the world over for its smoked fish, the Arbroath Smokie. It was here, in the Abbey, that the Declaration of Arbroath was signed in 1320. The coastal town of Montrose offers beautiful sandy beaches, and is home to a large nature reserve known as the Basin, a haven for wildlife, a special favourite for wading birds due to its muddy nature! There are also wonderful beaches at Lunan Bay and St Cyrus. The spectacular Glamis Castle, which was the childhood home of the late Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, is a fantastic family day out, and golfers must pay a visit to the famous Carnoustie championship golf course.

Highlands and Islands

This region takes in Inverness-shire, Ross-shire, Sutherland, Caithness and the islands include the Inner and Outer Hebrides as well as Orkney and the Shetland islands. For spectacular scenery the Highlands of Scotland provides some of the best, with a huge expanse of area full of mountains, lochs and glens full of romance, wildlife and scenic beauty. The heritage of this area includes Culloden, taking the ferry to the Isle of Skye or just taking in one of the many castles like Eilean Donan. There is also an immense range of wildlife to be found.

We absolutely loved staying at the castle. The rooms were amazing and the grounds were so beautiful. We loved waking up to see the deer outside - the most lovely views. It was also a super base for touring around Angus and there were two beautiful beaches close by - Lunan Bay and St Cyrus. Would thoroughly recommend a stay here.

Thank you for your great feedback, it's a pleasure to hear you found both the booking process and staff helpful.

Sounds like you all had a great time at the castle and made the most out of your trip .. we hope we can be of help should you ever wish to return!

9th July 2014 Excellent

We were given a very warm welcome from Jan the Castle's housekeeper on arrival. The apartment was huge and wonderful, full of beautiful pieces of furniture. It was like having our very own stately home! Rather a long trek up the stairs but hey it's in a castle and to be expected and proved to be good exercise. The rooms were lovely, the beds comfortable with good quality bedding, the whole apartment was clean and surprisingly warm. It is Scotland and even in summer we did use the open fire on a couple of evenings to take the chill off and for ambience. Boy does that fire pump out the heat, best open fire I have ever experienced. The castle estate grounds are great for a walk and the tennis court fun. We had a great time and will definitely return, but for longer as a week was not long enough! :-)

Thanks so much for your comments. Great to hear that you were pleased with our service throughout and enjoyed your stay at this lovely Castle!

We look forward to hearing from you when you wish re book again in the future. And would be delighted to help again!

2nd June 2014 Excellent

Good facilities, well prepared and maintained. Excellent location.
Missed a close sitting out area, but good walking

Thank you for your feedback and further to our conversation, I’m sorry you found our requirement to bank a security bond unreasonable. Should you wish to return to MacDuff again, we’d be happy to ask the owner if she’d consider offering to waive or receive the bond from you herself.

We prefer not to receive the bond any more than 7 days up to the holiday start date. We offer this service for the benefit of owners and clients for FREE with a guaranteed 7 day return for online debit/credit payments. Cheque & bank transfers are accepted but take longer to return which we advise in our literature. Most agencies letting large holiday houses of this nature require a security bond, generally payable to the owners direct. We feel holding it ourselves provides a measure of security guests may otherwise not enjoy.

9th October 2013 Great

The ambience of the castle environment was fine with lots of space inside and out. A few thoughts though;

1 the heating didn't seem to come on so whilst the open fire kept the lounge warm on an evening it was on the cool side in the mornings especially the bathrooms

2 The 60 steps up to the level of the apartment were an issue especially when unloading/loading the car. I think I climbed 2500 feet in the week. A small mountain! Just need to make this clear in any advertising etc

3 a small issue was that only one of the two bedrooms was available initially, rectified on request to the housekeeper.

4 kitchen was nicely equipped with everything needed

Thank you for your positive comments and review. Having inspected this wonderful apartment many times and stayed here in the past, I have tried to make everyone aware that it is on the second floor and have mentioned this five times in the advertising text, including a warning that it may be unsuitable for the less able. I am glad to hear that the housekeeper rectified any other minor issue and we recommend that these are dealt with directly to ensure you have the type of holiday that you envisaged. We look forward to helping with any future plans to visit Scotland, and don’t forget we offer a loyalty discount to returning guests.

Kinnard Castle is a majestic castle tucked away in beautiful woodlands - a haven for wildlife. The castle, its décor and the grounds speak for itself - an amazing place of beauty. The extensive gardens and woodlands can be seen from the apartment where you can watch deer, pheasants, squirrels and rabbits - just magical. From the moment we arrived at the gatehouse and started the drive to the castle we were in awe.

Kinnard Castle is a very special place offering a sense of royalty. Entrance via the romantic courtyard leads you to the stairs of the apartment. All rooms have impressive period detail, they are comfortable, cosy and have the most amazing fireplaces. You have to see it to believe it.

We can't wait to return.
