A medieval village originally founded by 12th century monks, with the River Rother flowing through and many shops & pubs to choose from. The pretty gardens at Merriments Nursery are nice for a quiet stroll and spotting the wildlife from the bird hide.
The impressive moated Bodiam Castle is well worth a visit, visitors can explore the ruins with guided talks from the medieval characters on site. There are also a variety of seasonal events such as medieval cookery, dancing and walks through the grounds. Run by the National Trust, Batemans House was the home of Rudyard Kipling and hosts a range of events through the year such as smuggling trails, photography and painting workshops. The 300 acres of grounds are a mix of woodland trails and meadows.
A short drive north is the Bedgebury National Pinetum which is great for walks and picnics. There are a huge range of activities to choose from including mountain biking, archery and the Go Ape tree swings, rope bridges and zip lines. The historic Great Dixter House offers guided tours of the stunning formal gardens and orchard grounds, this is a must for any horticultural enthusiasts and in the Summer there are workshops which can be booked in advance.
