  • "This is a very beautiful cottage, very nice decorated."

The garden is nice, must be really good in summer. Stella is very welcoming and the scones were very tasty. The cottage is in Newburgh, a small village with most amenities (bakery, butcher, coop, pub and some small shops). We really enjoyed our week's stay and we recommend spending some time here. Thanks!

Smart TV with Netflix was great. There is a very big park just up the road on the right hand side, and a few shops and 1 pub. We would certainly recommend the wonderland cottage, it was like being in a dream. And Stella the owner was very nice.

Thank you so much for the lovely feedback. So glad you enjoyed Wonderland. Warm wishes Stella Property Owner

  • "We had a great short last minute 2 night stay at Wonderland Cottage."

The cottage was lovely and warm on arrival and very clean. A very nice extra to come in to lovely scones, jam and butter all set on the table for us! The cottage is beautiful inside and out! Enchanting and full of quirky, fun ornaments that I loved. The Christmas decorations were lovely and really made us feel at home while we were there. We had a great sleep and found the bed comfortable, the shower was great and the bathroom was beautiful! Cosy living room with stove and great selection to watch on the TV. The garden was great, secure for our small dog and loved all the garden furniture etc. The village was lovely and we enjoyed some nice walks and a visit to the wee bakery in the morning. Really sweet homes decorated for Christmas. Beautiful sunset over the water. We had a lovely visit to the Village Inn in Bridge of Earn for lunch, a short drive away. Everything we needed was there in the cottage and a lovely message from Stella once we arrived. We would love to come back for a longer stay in the future. Thank you for a lovely, relaxing stay! :)

Sorry for the late response! Thank you so much for the lovely feedback, We will hopefully see you again, you will love the garden in the summer! Very warm wishes Stella Property Owner

Stella our host was excellent and so helpful. We had a small problem with the television on Christmas Eve and she came over with the family ( as they were on their way to a pantomime) and sorted it within 10 minutes. Stella was so apologetic. I would highly recommend wonderland cottage.

Stairs are quite steep – might be an issue for someone with mobility problems. Excellent position: very central for Perthshire or Fife. There is a washing machine, and a line for hanging things out, but with no airer f it was difficult to dry clothes. The Indian room did not have a wardrobe. Plentiful crockery, but not microwave safe. Easy on street parking. Nice touch: they put on the Christmas lights the night we arrived!

  • "Big plus is the host was very friendly and helpful."

But there are many appliances at Wonderland but a distinct lack of instructions which would have been helpful, particularly when trying to operate the TV or the DVD. Also the sofa was extremely uncomfortable, which is the last thing you want to relax on after a long day out. The kitchen has impact , but you will soon realise that worktops need to be decluttered when attempting to prepare a meal. Given most self catering places these days also offer instructions on what to do with waste and how to separate, which is always different from council to council, it again would have helped to have instructions what to do with waste. The only option seemed to put it all together……which we didn’t by the way. But the place is charming in its clutter and own very unique way. And this charm makes for a special holiday. Plus you won’t want for a kinder or friendlier host, so we’re reluctant to be even slightly negative.

There are some lovely and unusual items if you take the time to look, the owner has a real flair that I really wish I have! The bed and sofa were comfortable and the garden was just amazing, a really treat. The owner was lovely and responded immediately if we had any questions. There is a Co-op in the town a short walk away. It is very convenient for site seeing and close to Perth and Dundee if you want a city/town. We visited Glamis and Stirling castle and Falkland Palace all of which we really enjoyed. All in all one of the best cottages we have ever stayed in and we have stayed in a lot!

  • "I was looking forward to my stay at the Cottage as it appeared to have good reviews, the Cottage’s definitely has potential but was let down by a number of factors."

First the positives, the location of the cottage was ideal for exploring the surrounding area especially the fife coastal towns. Although the village does not have a lot and what they did have never seemed to be open the local town Cupar is easy to get to in car to pick up any essentials. The house was definitely quirky and unusual as described but I was not prepared for how quirky. In my opinion it was decisively too cluttered with too many pieces that didn’t show the property off to its full potential. We arrived looking forward to the scones many seemed to appreciate only to find the table was set for two with two tea sets and two scones even though the property was clearly booked for three. So after a very long drive we had to share the two between us after having popped to the shop to get some milk. The kitchen bin had not been emptied either and there was lots of fruit flies milling around because of it, so I took the trash bag out- none left as spares to replace so had to go buy some. It was here we found the outside bin was already overflowing with nowhere to put the bin from the kitchen. I contacted the owner who said it should have been emptied a number of days before, said someone would come round to sort it but they never. The bin was still overflowing when we left a week later so whoever is in the property this week will have the same difficulties. The kitchen did not have enough matching cutlery, was a miss match of items that unfortunately had to be washed before use as cups and cutlery were all stained. All the kitchen counters were sticky with jam residue on one, which may account for the flies hanging around which we couldn’t seem to get rid of during our stay they were a nuisance. The oven was abysmal for cooking even on 250 oven chips were not cooked under 45 minutes it just didn’t seem to get up to temperature so be prepared for long cooking time. The house was absolutely full of cobwebs and dead flies, if having as much Knick knacks around at least be prepared to dust things regularly. The beds were pretty comfortable but if you are wanting to store anything in the property be aware most cupboards are full off brick and brack, I could only use a small proportion of the wardrobe in my room and one draw. I do not feel the house is kitted out for 4 grown adults as although it has two double beds there was not enough glasswear for drinks especially if you all wanted wine or a drink in a tall glass. The sofa was terrible uncomfortable and slouchy, and fit two adults with only one other chair i don’t know where the 4th adult would sit. It would also be useful to have a welcome guide for those stopping in the property, there were plenty of books around but nothing contained important information like. Information like wifi passwords which had to be taken off back of router on floor, what to do with recycling, where to put towels when you leave just the basic stuff really. I was also looking forward to exploring the garden so many had gone one about before our visit but the grass and garden was overgrown, with lots of weeds so unfortunately did not get to see the wonderland people have raved about. Despite all the negatives we just got on with it and didn’t let it spoil our trip spending most of the day outdoors exploring local area.

Dear Heather, I was devastated to read your review. After much deliberation on how to respond I have decided it best to simply offer my apologies that you did not like Wonderland. Kind regards Stella I would like also to assure potential guests that read this review that I work extremely hard to create a magical experience for everyone that visits Wonderland and do my very best to address any issues that may arise during a stay. There are several references in this review that are inaccurate but I feel to respond to each point I disagree with would be unpleasant and argumentative. Wonderland is full of quirks and curiosities and I appreciate it is maybe not for everyone but I feel that most of our reviews will give you a good idea of what to expect. On a final note I would like to say albeit I welcome feedback of all kinds it is very difficult not to take it personally and I would urge people to speak to property owners in person. It is important to me that guests have the best possible holiday experience I can provide. Wonderland is not only my passion it is also my business. A bad review hurts on all levels. • "Simply amazing!"

Hands down one of the best properties I've had the pleasure staying in. Strap yourself in because this is going to be a lengthy review. Booking Wonderland Cottage was a simple process, clear instructions given once booked to access the property and the directions were spot on. Plenty of on street parking nearby which was ideal. As soon as you arrive and open the gate the real magic begins. The photographs advertising the property really don't do it justice at all. The cottage has been lovingly decorated with such imagination and creativity. The livingroom is cosy, inviting and has the comfiest sofa ever. Was so good having the use of the wood burning stove to create an even cosier environment. The kitchen is fully pact with all the appliances you could ever need on your stay. The pop of colour from the tiled table and back splash really gives the room a punch of boldness. The kitchen was immaculately clean, actually the entire property was cleaned to a high standard. On entering the kitchen we were greeted by a little basket of goodies for us and a lovely box that contained two homemade lavender scones, which were delicious! Upstairs the two bedrooms are the ideal place to relax after a busy day. The beds are really comfy, plenty of storage space for your belongings in both rooms and so many little touches to make both rooms special in their own way. Everywhere we looked there was something new to discover. Opening little boxes or cupboards you were greeted with hidden gems in tying with the Alice in Wonderland theme. We were still finding little things we had missed 3 days on because there was just so many creative touches its hard to find them all! Fresh towels were there for our arrival in both rooms along with spares in the bathroom. The bathroom is simply gorgeous. The deep rolling bath, the gorgeous bowled sink with all its eye-catching patterns and access to toiletries. I think it was a class act to provide sanitary products for guests, its just another thing to add on top of the other considerate things Stella did for us. Moving onto the garden, well where do I start? Wonderland isn't just within the cottage, it's in the foundations of the beautiful garden. It's clear a lot of effort has gone into the garden, from all the little touches like windchimes, statues and even a bike with a basket full of flowers. As you work your way up the garden widens and there is a cute little area with chairs and an area to relax in. Stella kindly gave us a tour through the special door showing us her wooden hut, the secret den and lots of other amazing features of this property. At night time we were so grateful that Stella set up the fire pit for us and even gave us some marshmallows and sticks to enjoy with the kids. Once dark the garden transforms with all the twinkly lights that wind around the trees and over the path, the solar stake lights that flicker fire and the various lit gems that scatter the garden. Every moment of our 3 night stay was always met with kindness and though fullness. We really felt welcomed and appreciated from the beginning to the very end. It genuinely was a fantastic stay and would highly recommend anyone looking for a break away in a wonderful location then Wonderland Cottage is the place to book. The kids loved it and didn't want to leave, to be fair either did me or my friend! As a side note...if you have got this far...take the bad review that you might spot on here with a pinch of salt. Not entirely sure where they stayed but certainly wasn't the same place we went to. Don't let that review put you off booking because you will not be disappointed. Thanks again Stella for having us and look forward to visiting again ❤️

... is named Exactly that for a reason, because it's full of wonder. It is beautiful, cosy, spotlessly clean, and along with the amazing gardens, was enchanting and magical. We arrived with our hairy wean (it was his pawliday!) Attention to detail in the cottage is fabulous, Stella was on hand at all times when we needed her. She was the most lovely and delightful human being, and nothing was ever a problem when you needed her. She is always on hand and is contactable on the mobile number given. The kitchen felt like it was mine (Stella knew this) I can only imagine the gardens in summer when in full bloom they would be beautiful. Stella was working on them as we were leaving.' Down the rabbit hole!.....WOW! Absolutely fabulous. Make sure you take your groceries before you go, essentials, Fairy Liquid, milk, sugar, bread, Stella provides beautiful lavender scones and oatcakes. There is an array of herbal tea bags, the only supermarket in the village is the Co-op. The towns of Anstruther and St Andrews are both absolutely stunning and suitable for your dog as they both have beaches.Newborough has loads of local walks. I would have no hesitation in returning to Wonderland

  • "Property looks lovely online."

Property looks lovely on first sight but the wardrobes were full of linen so used our cases to keep our clothes in, the cupboards in the kitchen were full with partly used foodstuffs. We only had a light breakfast so didn't need them to store any food. Unfortunately I was looking for a teapot to use to put tea into but of all the teapots on display only one was grease free. The sofa wasn't the one in the picture, it was very low and uncomfortable to sit in, however, the armchair also not in the pictures was comfy. The mattress on the bed in the main bedroom was of poor quality. We could feel the springs through the mattress topper. We used the duvet from the other bed to lie on which fixed the issue. Some of the doors didn't close properly so would have been an issue if there was a fire. The garden will be special in spring, just a bit soggy when we went which can't be helped. I never met Stella, she met my husband and said she'd sent me a message that I never received. All in all it was a good base to explore the area. Needs accurate pictures and some maintenance to sort out the issues mentioned.

Every detail was so thoughtful and authentic; all the surprise compartments, every lovingly selected and customised piece of period furniture and decoration. Everything was immaculately clean and well presented. We have seldom felt so at home. We really needed this escape from reality after a turbulent few years - Stella’s willingness to accommodate us in every way, her welcoming nature (and scones!) and the personal tour of the larger grounds - all of it just brimmed with warmth and kindness. The whole experience has been exactly what we needed and hoped for, and so much more. It is clear that Wonderland Cottage and its gorgeous rambling gardens is so much more than just a business - it emanates warmth, love, creativity and magic. The location itself is very tranquil, set off the main road through a little close, so there is no traffic disturbance which we loved. The garden is enclosed so was dog-safe, and indeed dog-approved. Thank you for making us feel so welcome in this little gem of a cottage, we hope to come back soon x

It's very warm (great in February) and comfortable with good access to a range of shops. Tucked away behind the main street means it is a bit dark, especially downstairs, with no real outlook, only onto the back of some houses and whereas we got parked it may be a problem at busier times on the high street. The garden was a bit untidy, with several projects ongoing, but because it wasn't warm enough to sit out this didn't cause any problems. Overall we felt it was good value for a winter break.

We have a German shepherd, Caucasian shepherd mix so he's very big and guarding but Baloo was so calm and comfortable here. Loved the wooden and cool floors when us humans needed the fire or heating on! The only thing I had a bit of a struggle with was the shower door, it could do with a latch so stay shut and keep the water in and the garden isn't secure for big dogs/escapees but we are used to that! Highly recommend the distillery tour at the edge of the town! Places of interest are all around and easily visited in a day. Plenty of walking paths and the Fife Coastal Path was great with beautiful views along the river Tay. There is a well stocked shop for food supplies however, places to eat locally were not in evidence. Lovely welcoming touches like milk in the fridge and a box of eat me treats. Garden is slightly overgrown but adds to the character of the cottage. Wonderland themed bedroom was particularly lovely, and the bathroom. Comfortable and spacious. Packed cleaning products following previous bad experience with self-catering cottage elsewhere (also different management company - not sykes) Packed all back into the car unused as the cottage was spotless! No terrestrial tv at the cottage - not a problem if you are happy with smart tv/ fire stick then it’s ok. Could also log in to personal netflix etc accounts. Wifi signal good. Mobile signal with our provider patchy. Parking could be an issue but we had no problem during our stay. Managed to park outside. If there is a problem 5 minute walk - public car park no parking fee at the top of the hill on the way into the village (fife coastal path route) Good location for exploring locally no further than 45 mins or so from any ‘tourist’ destination. Felt like a home from home. 2 pubs within walking distance. Didn’t sample either though. Chinese takeaway very friendly - decent food. Newburgh a ‘normal’ village rather than one geared to tourists. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Would recommend the cottage - lovely place to stay.

  • "So, first of all, the cottage is lovely, exactly what what you see in the photographs."

We used all of the facilities with no problems, heating, cooking, wi-fi all great. Maybe a basic Freeview box for the TV would help if your not OK with a smart TV. The garden could do with a little TLC although just a bit of a tidy really. Communication with the owner again, great, there was a fault with the key safe but all sorted by the time we got there. There were a few issues we thought we need to highlight as it did impact on our stay. Parking, and local facilities. There is no dedicated parking and its pretty much first come first served outside the cottage, otherwise, its street parking. And with the street parking, there are local time restrictions so you need to be on your toes to be aware of them. More than once, we did end up parking 500 yards down the main street just to get an overnight space. The other issue is local facilities in Newburgh itself. This is a small working town not really set up for tourists or visitors. There is 1 takeaway shop, 1 small bar (to be fair, we didn't go in as it looked very small and we were conscious of the local COVID-19 rules), and 1 hotel (not open for accommodation, not doing food, cash only, and the rear beer garden is nothing more than the drayman's delivery yard). There is small local (Co-Op) which does have everything you need for self entertaining. All in all, the cottage is lovely, its just the local facilities that let it down slightly.

About the location

NEWBURGH, FIFE

St. Andrews 20.1 miles; Cupar 10.5 miles

The royal burgh and parish of Fife is an agricultural community positioned alongside the salmon fishing waters of the River Tay, overlooking the marshy Mugdrum Island. To the east lies the ancient Lindores Abbey, a historical and overgrown ruin left to be uncovered. There are plenty of attractions nearby such as, the Lindores Abbey Distillery for whisky lovers, the National Trust's Balmerino Abbey with its atmospheric 13th-century ruins and the Backhouse Rossie Estate, an RHS Partner Garden with rare plants, woodland walking and children's trails. The Tentsmuir National Nature Reserve at Morton Lochs offers something for everyone, an ever changing landscape with seals hauling themselves out of the water, hungry birds looking for food and a rich variety of nature's wonders. Though the village of Newburgh may be small, there are many treasures drawing in visitors; the remains of Macduff's Cross are a historical landmark to discover, Newburgh Sailing Club and Laing Museum featuring antiquarian artefacts of Newburgh's Alexander Laing. This delightful location is one for adventurous visitors seeking a rejuvenating break to the Fife countryside.
