  • "Had a lovely week, the cottage is very cosy and has everything you need."

Very quiet location but still only 10 mins walk to the nearest beach. Plenty of dog walks from the door, into the forest behind the cottage or onto the coastal paths. The garden is secure so it was great to let the dog out and not worry about him getting out. Lovely doggy treats left and wine which is a nice touch. Our first trip to the area and will definitely come back in the future as loved it. Wildlife surrounds the cottage bring birdfeed and sit and relax and watch the birds and maybe you'll get lucky and see a red squirrel, we did.

Hi Angela, we are so glad you enjoyed your holiday in Rockliffe staying at our cosy little Barn. It is such a special & peaceful area where you can immerse yourself in nature, & Thank you so much for your generous feedback - we always greatly appreciate it! That way, We know we are still on track. However, I do apologise that you had to buy some feed for the wildlife - we usually leave some for guests (gratis) in the boot locker. Spotless with everything you need with lovely views, the house has been furnished with comfort and style in mind. Little light pollution means that the night sky is spectacular on a clear night. Lovely outside space too. Lots of beaches and forest walks nearby.

So pleased you enjoyed your holiday and that The Barn did not disappoint! Also, you managed to get some clear night skies and see those stars - bonus - from the bed too! Thank you for your lovely feedback Karen. Property Owner

  • "The Barn was everything we were looking for - cosy, welcoming, well equipped, with some lovely dog walks from the doorstep."

Great to have plenty of crockery, cutlery etc - including cafetière, teapot, gravy boat and butter dish! Stove was a lovely feature, with logs included - layout of the property was well designed and worked brilliantly for us and the dog. Enclosed garden brilliant. Only slight let down for me was the bed - smaller than it needed to be in the large room, and very soft. Info beforehand not very clear - but everything was an improvement on expected… there is excellent wifi, free standing fridge freezer and a second under counter fridge (I would have preferred a dishwasher to second fridge!), washing machine, vacuum cleaner etc. All in all a lovely space for a relaxing week’s holiday.

Thank you so much for your lovely feedback! Glad you enjoyed your break at The Barn. We really do listen & are grateful for ALL feedback. Bigger bed is on the list for next year as a few guests have mentioned it, & when the under counter fridge gives up, I think a dishwasher may be on order! Good idea. Property Owner

  • "So glad we booked this cottage."

In an excellent location surrounded by beautiful scenery & well centred for places to visit. The cottage itself was so comfortable & clean with a balcony for sitting out in where you can just admire the view whilst listening to the wildlife & relaxing with a glass of wine or two. Our dog was also very relaxed here. Met Karen the owner, who was very helpful advising of places to go etc. She left some lovely treats for us & our dog. We loved it that much, we have already booked for next year.

It was lovely to meet you both and of course the gorgeous JD! Oh! so glad you all enjoyed this special area and The Barn! It really is great to hear that we are doing something right - my benchmark is 'would I like to stay there/what would I want' so ideas always welcome. We just need the red squirrels back - they really were the icing on the cake! We have had a few reported sightings, but year before last, they were resident around us. Fingers crossed they are back for when you return next year. Hopefully JD will remember me! Property Owner

  • "A lovely property in a beautiful part of the country."

We go to Dumfries and Galloway every year and decided to stay in Rockliffe this year to be nearer the coast. Our only problem (and this is personal) was our dog did not like being in the garden that was upstairs. She likes to go straight out of the door and this was not possible. We didn't anticipate this when we booked.

Oh I’m so sorry that your dog did not enjoy The Barn as much as you! Did she not even like to go in from the gate at ground level? We are dog owners & lovers and understand how this might blight your stay. Thank you for the amazing feedback - considering, and glad you enjoyed this special little area of D&G. • "The property was beautiful, so well designed and resourced."

It felt very spacious yet cosy and because it was so remote our dog settled well. Loved that dog blankets for window seats and bowls and treats were provided too. Our only criticism is that this property is advertised as having a bath so I took bath bombs expecting to relax after a days walking. Also, the pub/hotel at 0.9 miles is now closed. However, overall we loved it.

Hi Michelle, thank you so much for your lovely feedback! I do apologise for this inaccuracy in the listing - I must admit I had not noticed that this part of the description was still there. The bath has been out for nearly 2 years and I notified them earlier this year that the local pub had actually closed and we were not sure if they were re-opening or not, and so requested this to be removed. They have obviously taken it off a part of the description, but not all of it. Im so glad that you managed to enjoy your holiday anyway! - Thank you once again for staying with us and for giving us this important piece of feedback. I will get back in touch with them again so this inaccuracy and disappointment can be avoided in future. Kind Regards Karen www.carrickholidaycottages.co.uk Property Owner

The facilities and maintenance of the Barn were outstanding. The design and decoration were as described and overall more than met our expectations. The only thing we found disappointing was the bed, if you were more than 5 foot 7 the bed would be too short. My partner who is 6ft struggled to fit into the bed I would highly recommend the Barn, we had a fab week, our dog loved sitting out on the balcony, watching the cows and listening to the birds.

Thanks for the fabulous feedback! Sorry about the regular double bed, I hope he managed some sleep! A couple of guests have mentioned that now, so I think a king size is definitely on the improvements list! Regards Karen Property Owner

  • "The property is nicely decorated and in a peaceful location with plenty of good walks locally."

The woods that are meant to be accessible from the door were not suitable for walking due to forestry work blocking the route. Unfortunately the bed was very uncomfortable, far too soft and the pillows far too big. The bed is a double with a foot board and as such my partner (6'3") couldn't sleep in it. After a night of repeatedly hitting his head and feet, over the next few nights he ended up trying to sleep on the sofa, pull out bed and floor. I ended up having to buy a pillow. He also couldn't fit under the shower at its maximum height. Although I appreciate he is tall, he isn't exceptionally so and I would strongly suggest the owners consider changing the bed. The listing also needs updating to reflect the fact there is no bath. There are another two properties next door and no enclosed area to let dogs out. Due to an error on my part we arrived a day early. When I spoke to the owner he was abrupt and unhelpful. Thankfully, the current residents were very kind to us and all the local B&Bs I called were very keen to help and eventually we found somewhere to stay for the extra night. Although this was my fault, a little warmth from the owner wouldn't have gone amiss. The next day, the female owner offered to prepare the property early and we gained access about an hour early although she did make a point of telling us she was sweating as a result of her efforts. Will definitely not return.

With pre -booking required at many attractions now because of covid the lack of wifi is difficult. We phoned the owner prior to departure for details of key collection : we also had some questions but she was too busy to speak. She said she'd phone back but didn't. We have two dogs and needed a comfortable cottage away from roads where we could let the dogs out in the morning without worrying. It was situated along a track near a pretty bay with woods to explore behind us. We do know the area which is rural and beautiful especially in the autumn. The barn itself was really dog friendly with wooden floors and no carpets - really important when you have muddy dogs!! Very well equipped and clean. Would’ve liked WiFi but that’s the only downside. • "The Barn is down a track which I think would've been tricky in snow/ice - just something to think about for winter visitors!"

No problem in a 4x4 though. The owners talked a lot about cleanliness due to the coronavirus, and although it was clean, it could definitely have been cleaner. I think a dishwasher would be a good investment, particularly now we're in the post-Covid era! Also the bedding was a bit synthetic and hot, and the bath was teeny tiny. And we could defo tell that the place is dog-friendly as there were a fair few hairs/doggy smells around! And the 'basket of firewood' contained a lot of totally unburnable twigs and an old drawer, complete with metal brackets!! Defo bring your own logs if you're hoping to get the woodburner going on your first night. BUT there was lots of good stuff too - particularly the red squirrels - we bought food from the Spar down the road, and after a couple of days, hey presto, there were Ginger and Blondie, regularly visiting. It was heavenly. We also saw a woodpecker doing his/her thing in the trees outside. And it really is lovely and peaceful.

About the location

ROCKCLIFFE

Kippford 4.1 miles, Dalbeattie 6.7 miles, Castle Douglas 12.5 miles

Rockcliffe is one of a number of small seaside villages along the stretch of the north shore of the Solway Firth known as the Colvend Coast. Rockcliffe is an extremely pretty place. An arc of largely white-painted houses and cottages stand on the landward side of the road, looking out over the beach. The village stands on the east side of the mouth of Rough Firth, the estuary of the Urr Water. Two islands are visible offshore; the more distant is Hestan Island, complete with its lighthouse and cottages, and closer in, a third of a mile from Rockcliffe, is Rough Island. This is accessible on foot at low tide, either via a causeway of sorts from the north, or directly across the sand from Rockcliffe. Anyone intending to visit should first find out how long they have before the incoming tide cuts the island off once more: and the island should be avoided in May and June to allow nesting seabirds to breed in peace. The beach at Rockcliffe attracts many visitors, though it has two very different aspects, depending on the state of the tide. Visit at high tide and the sea can be within a few yards of the sloping wall beside the road. At low tide, on the other hand, the nearest open water can be the better part of a mile away, beyond the beaches and the craggy rocks that punctuate them, beyond Rough Island, and beyond the mudflats in the estuary. There is very little commercial activity in Rockcliffe. A cafe stands on the seaward side of the road near the south east end of the village. And on the hillside North of Rockcliffe is the Baron's Craig Hotel. Outside the village itself, much of the land in the area is owned by the National Trust for Scotland. This includes parts of the coastal strip South to Castlehill Point, which marks the true entrance to Rough Firth, and Rough Island. Apart from the coastal land North West of Rockcliffe, a footpath leads to Kippford, a mile away and en route you pass the Mote of Mark. This dark age hillfort overlooks the Urr Estuary and is thought to have been occupied for up to 300 years until being destroyed by fire in the 700s. It is said to be named after Mark, King of Dumnonia, and links have been made with the story of Tristan and Isolde and with the legends of King Arthur.
