  • "Clean, comfortable and warm accommodation everything provided for a excellent holiday in a lovely part of Scotland, as a Photographer I had a wonderful week, and we would both stay again, the owners are very sociable and nothing is to much trouble, It’s a very quiet area with all the facilities in Hawick a few miles away."

  • "Cottage was lovely and clean and very comfortable."

Everything was great in the kitchen, except the constant humming of the water pump. This was not an issue when we closed the kitchen door. It was much closer to other buildings than on the website photos, although we did not see other people possibly because we were out a lot. The drive onto the main road was very very steep - hard to navigate through the gears whilst watching out for fast oncoming traffic turning the corner. The mirror on the opposite side of the road was a godsend. Very central location for all the places we wanted to visit whilst staying in The Borders.

  • "The cottage was just lovely, bigger than expected."

I don't think the photos do it justice. The enclosed garden is perfect for us as we have a dog, although it should be noted that it is not immediately outside the cottage. Not a problem though. Having the acces to the river was wonderful. We enjoyed watching the birds at the feeders. The cottage is about 8 miles outside Hawick so very rural but it is immediately off the A7 so the road links are excellent - best of both worlds. The cottage is clean, comfortable, just perfect. We were provided with everything we needed including milk, tea, washing up liquid - it's good after a long journey to just have these things there and not need to dig through bags of things we had brought with us. Gina popped down to say hello and could not have been more friendly and welcoming. I wish we had been able to stay longer and I thoroughly recommend this cottage to everyone.

  • "The cottage was lovely, beds very comfortable and the shower was hot."

It was lovely to sit on the patio in the sunshine as it’s a lovely sun trap, plenty of places to visit from the cottage there were a few negatives 1) we think the garden furniture could do with a lick of paint also they were covered in cobwebs, I had to dust them all off before sitting on them and there were no cushions. 2) the welcome pack in our eyes wasn’t a welcome pack, toilet roll, washing liquid, milk, & 4 biscuits, we have stayed in quiet a few now and the welcome packs we received were beautiful, let’s say a bit of food from there area, we have had flowers, cake, chocolate, wine, etc at the other cottages that we stayed in. 3) the bedrooms it felt like our clothes were damp, not sure if it’s because there is no daylight in there because there are really big trees right outside the windows and the bedrooms were always cold even though we have had a fantastic week with the sunshine. Apart from those few negative remarks we have throughly enjoyed our stay at the cottage

  • "Lovely cottage but no proper nearby dog walks."

It is possible to walk 400 yards along a small footpath adjacent to the busy A7 single carriageway road to a gravel track which leads to an uneven farmers field, but not somewhere you could properly exercise your dog. You are able to use the gardens attached to the cottage but when your dog needs longer walks it is not really suitable nor is it secure, As a plus 7 miles away, towards Hawick centre, there is a lovely park which is well tended & ideal for the dog walks but you need to commute. I suppose the six million dollar question is would we go back & the answer has to be yes!

Lovely personal welcome gift when we arrived off Gina and she contacted us straight away, to see if we needed anything. Fab shower and the beds were so comfortable. Excellent standard of fixture and fittings. Even a Christmas tree up in the lounge! Only note, if taking dogs the garden is not enclosed and there is access to the road. Thanks for a lovely week.

  • "I feel very badly about writing a bad ‘crit’ for this property because the owners are so friendly and helpful, but really it was not an enjoyable stay – felt somewhat like being in prison because whilst there are lots of good places to go to, it is necessary to take the car (or a bike if you had it there and had an extensive enough cycling range!"

) to get anywhere, and the entrance (or more particularly, exit) is appallingly dangerous, even for a younger and quicker driver than I. I was also puzzled as to why, when I reached home, some 250 miles away, I found an email telling me that I must empty the bins at the cottage and make sure I left it clean and tidy. By that time, presumably, the next residents had discovered the mess and muck you seem to assume I would leave a property. Too late to go back to check/remedy, so why add insult to what was a worrying stay?

We would like to thank you for taking the time to provide feedback and your acknowledgment of the helpful and welcoming environment we offer. We were pleased to hear that you found the list of recommended places to visit very useful, you had the opportunity to experience the variety the local area has to offer, its scenic beauty and you enjoyed sitting in the garden and the local wildlife. We were however saddened to read that you did not enjoy your stay and that none of your issues were raised with us when we met with you or anytime during your stay. The cottage is set in a beautiful, rural location and not within walking distance of amenities. This is clear in our listing and is a perfect base for exploring the surrounding historic Scottish Border towns and English Borderlands. We also have a map on our listing showing the location of the property. With regards to the exit, there is a traffic mirror placed at the top of the driveway to assist. Regarding the email that you are unhappy with: This is an automated email sent out by Sykes to all guests a day before they depart from a property and certainly not a personally directed message indicating you had caused any concerns. It is unfortunate that there was a delay in you reading the email, but the information provided is sent ahead of departure to try and ensure the changeover at properties is as smooth as possible so there is no delay for the incoming guests. As a regular Sykes customer, you would have been sent this email on your previous visits to other Sykes properties. Property Owner

On the website photo it looked like there was a field nearby to take my dogs into, but the field belonged to a neighbour I think. We managed to find a forest walk to take the dogs instead.

The property

Colterscleuch Cottage is a fine stone cottage, formerly an old farm building, that has been converted into a spacious, bright and airy two-bedroom cottage.

Whilst still maintaining the traditional cottage feel with tone walls and wood burner, it has an inviting and warm homely feel. Set amidst rural farmland in the beautiful Scottish Borders' Teviot Valley, it provides a perfect base for exploring the surrounding historic Scottish border towns and English Borderlands.

There is an abundance of wildlife surrounding the cottage and it’s easy to spend an hour or so just watching the many birds come and go, including pheasants. Colterscleuch Cottage is a delightful property suited for a family or group of five but also not too big for couples looking for a quiet retreat.

The cottage enjoys a fairly secluded spot but is only a short drive away from amenities. Step into this all ground floor home and come to the kitchen/diner where an exposed stone wall features on one side, blending well with the soft cream and grey hues throughout the room, home to a fabulous range of appliances including an electric oven and hob, so you can get creative in the kitchen and produce some tasty meals to serve at the dining table. Take three steps up into the sitting room where you can sink into one of the two comfy sofas after lighting the woodburning stove and feeling the warmth on a winter evening, then browse the selection of games, books and DVDs and decide what the evening will hold; watch a film on the TV or curl up with a good book on the sofa. Open up the patio doors in summer which lead out from this room and delight in sitting on the patio with a refreshing drink out in the sun on the table and chairs. Step out beyond the patio to a secluded area, ‘The River Garden’, where you can sit and enjoy the views of the farmlands and listen to the babbling river and birdsong from the extensive wild bird population or venture further down for a dip in the River Teviot that runs at the bottom of the garden. During the long warm summer evenings you can enjoy a campfire, sitting round the firepit and watch the sunset over the farm fields with a view and sound of the river below.

Or for a late afternoon or evening retreat, why not have a BBQ over the firepit which has a large BBQ grill fitted and a picnic bench and table to enjoy your meal in the outdoors under the trees. Continue on when evening falls and find two bedrooms where you can rest your head, choosing from the king-size bedroom, or the triple room which holds three single beds, with quality furnishings for storage and pleasant, thoughtful decor creating a tranquil spot to wind down in. Completing the interior is the vibrant bathroom with teal painted walls, home to a bath as well as a separate walk-in shower. Golfers can enjoy exploring the variety of scenic golf courses in the surrounding Border towns each unique and providing spectacular views. Fishing enthusiasts can enjoy salmon, trout and grayling fishing in the various lochs in and around Hawick and further afield along the River Teviot and the River Tweed. Mountain bikers and cyclists can experience wonderful cycle routes, including the Southern Borders Loop (choosing between either 50 mile circuit or 75 mile loop on virtually traffic free roads through some of the wildest countryside to Newcastleton and Hawick); the Abbey Cycle Route (55 miles passing through 4 historic towns with wonderful Abbeys or local cycling trails around Hawick and Jedburgh and best of all for off roaders) and the Justice Trail (over 40 miles of great cycling in the hills around nearby Jedburgh). Those wanting to get back to nature can revel in the nearby Forestry at Craik in the heart of the Southern Uplands.

There are walks and cycle routes to suit all abilities and naturalists will love spotting red squirrel from the hides. Newcastleton Forest area is steeped in the history of the Rivers and cross-border raiding, crossing the border into England where it meets with Kielder Forest, making it part of the largest forest in Britain.

The 7 Stanes cycle route runs through here, and this vast forest is used by walkers, cyclists and horses. Travel up North to discover the historic town of Hawick, internationally known for its fine quality cashmere and knitwear as well as being rich in history, you will love browsing the great selection of outlets with quality knitwear, maybe even making a few purchases along the way to add to your wardrobe.

There are working mills in Hawick and Selkirk producing the best quality cashmere and knitwear in the world.

As well as outlets and museums, mill tours are also available to discover the rich and fascinating history of the Border towns. Over in Jedburgh, learn of the town's position as a frontier town in the midst of many a battle, and visit the house where Mary Queen of Scots stayed in 1566 learning of her tragic history. Colterscleuch Cottage is a fabulous retreat, perfect for making everlasting memories in the Scottish Borders.
