  • "Large, comfortable and well equipped."

Fabulous views, lovely garden. The house is in a great position, easy walk to Robin Hood's Bay, excellent facilities in the village (pub, shop, bakery) and on a regular half hourly bus route between Whitby and Scarborough (as a party of 6 with only one car, the bus was really useful). Great walks straight out of the door. The old railway line or Cinder Path runs along the coastal route as well as the Cleveland way so lots of options for circular routes. The house had all that we needed - in the absence of detailed reviews on the Sykes House page I had scoured reviews on other companies and some had said the facilities were lacking, but they weren't at all. The utility room with its stable door had a good washing machine (that played a little tune when it finished), dishwasher and tumble drier, there was a washing line, pegs, ironing board and iron, two vacuum cleaners (one wasn't working but one of my sons fixed it and emptied it so now there are two). Lots of fridge and freezer space, cafetierres and teapots, lovely range cooker, big dining table for dining and games, good telly for watching Wimbledon on, cute summer house in the garden that was very popular with our party. We couldn't work out the recycling and I asked Sykes and they said only one bin, so were saving things and taking them with us looking for recycling centres. Towards the end of our week we found a note under a chopping board saying that the bin contents will all go to be sorted at a recycling centre so it's a shame we didn't see that sign earlier. If you are reading this you will know you can put everything in the bin with a clear conscience. The only thing missing was oven gloves (I have left the ones I brought at the cottage for the next people) and a door mat front and back would have been really useful as we had showery weather. Also maybe a shoe rack and a couple of extra coat hooks for a house that sleeps 10. There's a nice sage patch in the garden if you want herbs for your dinner - it's near the washing line.

  • "We enjoyed our stay in August."

The house was in a beautiful situation with good walks in all directions, we hardly used the car. There was a delightful garden and view from the back of house. A well equipped kitchen and scullery with good washing and washing up machines. The bedrooms were mainly comfortable but throughout the house many of the windows were painted shut with broken sashes which made it rather stuffy on hot days. The window was cracked in the top double room. The sitting room was full of dog hairs and rather dusty.

Good afternoon thank you for taking the time to supply us with some feedback following your stay at Sheen Cottage. We are so glad you enjoyed the garden and the beautiful surroundings of Sheen cottage. We have taken on board your remarks about the cleaning and we have contacted the cleaning company to pass on your comments. Property Owner

  • "The house is a great size for our family of 6 adults and 4 children, plus dog."

Excellent for kids to pair up in double rooms and for parents and grandparents to have space for a few private moments. The hallway and utility provided room for active holiday luggage and was easy to keep clean. The kitchen is well equipped although a knife sharpener would have helped. Plenty of storage for food of all kinds. Wonderful to have a kitchen fridge and fridge freezer in utility room. Good selection and quantity of crockery, cutlery, pots, pans and utensils. Dishwasher and washing machine have eco settings. Garden is lovely with outside table and summerhouse. Love the wild bit at the bottom with compost, separated by a gate. Two bathrooms and a separate toilet were a God-send! One snag, the waste disposal arrangements. Only a grey bin, so no recycling enabled. We found inaccurate and incomplete paper instructions about waste management. We have a mainly plant based diet so food waste went on the compost but had to bring all recycling home! Overall, an excellent place that we all enjoyed. Thank you.

  • "Lovely large house well situated for exploring Robin Hoods Bay, Whitby and the Yorkshire coast."

Lovely garden, lots of walks from the door and lovely views. We arrived in the dark and it was impossible to find the cottage from the directions provided (the picture of the house is of the back of the house and Google maps takes you to another house). After calling the number provided of another holiday company where no-one had actually visited the property, we were promised a call from the cleaner to give us more information. This didn't happen and we had to knock on a number of doors along the street to identify where we were staying. Parking also is difficult and there seems to be some tensions from neighbours (with lots of cones being placed in front of the cottage). Apart from that, we had a lovely stay and would recommend.
