  • "Our stay at Sykes Lodge was wonderful!"

The house is exactly as listed, and was immaculately clean on our arrival. The beds were comfortable, temperature was warm. There were plenty of plates, cookwear and glasses for a large group. Living room was comfortable and had plenty of space for a big group to sit together. Alexandra and her husband were great hosts, and gave us a tour when we arrived to show us how to use everything, and gave us a welcome basket. The guide they put together for guests is detailed and helpful. I only had a few (very minor) negatives, flagging more for the hosts benefit - future guests please note neither of these should put you off staying at this wonderful house: - The pipes near the second fridge in the kitchen often smelled quite bad. I did flag this to Alexandra who explained it was due to leaves outside but it was occasionally quite off-putting, especially being so near the kitchen. - The hot tub had a button that shut down the whole thing and required the hosts to come and re-start it. The button looks like a typical menu button, so despite me telling our group about it, it still was accidentally pressed. This meant contacting the hosts to fix the hot tub, and waiting a few hours before they could come an help, interrupting the evening a bit. I'd suggest putting waterproof tape on this button, or a warning sign beside the hot tub, to stop this confusing situation happening in future.

Thank you Kate for your constructive feedback. I'm glad you and your party enjoyed your weekend. You have been fair in your comments and we do appreciate your compliments as well as any constructive criticism. Whilst your suggestion of taping up the button on the jacuzzi spa may indeed prevent accidental operation, unfortunately it would be negligent of us to do so as it is an emergency stop button. Avoidance of accidental operation was explained as part of the introductory demonstration and is further highlighted in our digital guide. We shall place additional signage as a further reminder. As I remember, the jacuzzi was made fully operational within 10 minutes of reporting the accidental pressing of the emergency stop button. Your comment about the smell from the downpipe is fair and was unfortunate and due to the multiple torrential thunderstorms flooding the surface water roadside soakaways causing a build up of roadside vegetation to smell. The Council has cleared the surrounding ditches and soakaways to resolve the issue following our notification. Property Owner

  • "We spent October week in this fantastic house."

Good communication with the owners from the start till the end of the holiday. The rooms were all unique and of a good size. We spent most of our time in the kitchen which was spacious and well laid out. A perfect area to eat, drink , chat and chill. The padock was loved by our two dogs who chased each other around in a safe environment . All in all I would highly recommend Sykes lodge. Perfect position surrounded by beautiful countryside but still only a 5 min drive to Malton and close enough to other towns and villages. The outside are is well maintained and the hottub is perfect for relaxing . The house is quite simply fantastic and made for a perfect holiday for all the family and our two dogs .

Thank you Andrew for your very generous review. It gives every member of our housekeeping and maintenance team a huge morale boost when they know their efforts are so much appreciated and they are part of the process to ensure every family choosing Sykes Lodge for their holiday has a superb experience. All beautifully maintained. The dog enclosure was very useful. A swimming pool would be a great addition. The large circular table accommodated us all comfortably, but had an alarming wobble. A very relaxing stay.

Thank you so much for such complimentary feedback and it is always great to know that our guests have had a relaxing break. Although we are always working on ideas to expand what we offer, your suggestion of a swimming pool will unfortunately have to stay on our wish list for the time being! Following an inspection of the wobble on the dining table it was found a bolt had displaced and has now been tightened. Thank you for drawing this to our attention in your review. Property Owner

  • "What a beautiful weeks stay in such a fabulous house and grounds!"

We certainly made the most of the glorious weather we were so lucky to have by playing all the outdoor games provided in the gorgeous grass paddock along with our two dogs. We did a lot of lounging on the patio and dipped into the hot tub with iced aperyol spritz (plenty of fridge/freezer space for refreshments!!!) Said hello daily to the friendly horse and sheep who made for welcome company during the stay! There’s something rather magical bathing in a hot tub whilst gazing at a beautiful horse shaded under a tree in a sunny green field and then later to the countryside starry nights sky. We definitely made the most of the kitchen facilities of which there were plenty and nibbled most days, cooked most evenings and ventured out to The Stoned Trough (which was delicious) one evening. The bed was insanely comfy and all rooms furnished to such a tasteful and high quality. All the showers were hot, powerful and never fell short despite the number of people staying/using them. We loved mooching about in the robes provided too, how can you not feel relaxed and in holiday mode in a robe!! The local walks we had were all delightful, down at Kirkham Abbey and along a couple of the rivers nearby. The footpath maps (online) are most certainly not a 100% given so we did come across a few fields overgrown over path with nettles/rape seed which we embraced, some more willingly than others! All in all a tremendous holiday, enjoyed by both Hens for the initial weekend and then my family for the remainder of the week. Thank you so much for the hospitality of Alexandra and Michael. Firstly for creating such a wonderful place to stay (we ALL enjoyed looking through the book!) and being so accommodating with our very few needs. All the best.

Thank you Catherine for your very generous review. We know we have a responsibility to deliver the highest hopes and expectations for the important and memorable occasions our guests celebrate at Sykes Lodge. Whilst we do this week after week we know that it is a unique and much looked forward to event for each individual group. With this in mind we put everything we have into preparing the house each time. Our housekeeping team have as much pride in what we have as we do and we hope the house is a reflection of this. I am so glad you enjoyed the whole Sykes Lodge experience to its maximum. The bonus was the incredible Yorkshire weather which allowed such abundant appreciation of the grounds. I met a few of the 'hens' in the park choosing a summer walk over a rounders match or croquet I was truly delighted your parents equally loved the rest of the week sampling everything this incredible area has to offer. Thank you for your appreciation which has been forwarded to every member of housekeeping and maintenance. Property Owner

5 families with young children and everyone was happy. The owners were so nice and welcoming. The hot tub was a hit and it was shame it wasn’t used more but the weather was awful and there was no shelter over it. The place is done out to a high standard. The only negatives are that there is hard flooring throughout and the children slipped over a lot on steps inside etc and hurt themselves on the floor. Could maybe have a big rug in the seating area next to the kitchen and curtains up at the huge door to warm the place up. No phone signal and the WiFi wasn’t any good which didn’t bother my family but was hard for others who needed to speak to family at home (other children etc). We tried to order a takeaway on the Saturday night but not one delivery place would deliver even the one mentioned in the pack at the cottage. Overall a fab place to accommodate a large group and we were more than happy with our stay.

Thank you for your complimentary comments. Feedback is always appreciated. Regarding the possibility of a rug in the kitchen sitting area; I appreciate that in a private home this would be the personal choice of many. However, given that we have a very high visitor turnover and accept pets, public hygiene and allergy considerations are paramount and we have kept soft floor coverings and curtains in public rooms to a minimum choosing stone and wood laminate floor coverings in keeping with the rustic/industrial styling. So sorry about the interruption in our superfast broadband connectivity. Had we known this, it would have been a 20 minute fix. We have since installed a landline connection for use should the Wi fi link go down. Property Owner

The property

A holiday experience in itself, Sykes Lodge is a spectacular conversion of a range of Edwardian farm buildings with an aristocratic heritage.

Whilst standing at the foot of the Yorkshire Wolds, a stone's throw from Castle Howard and only 16.3 miles from the historic City of York, the property sits in a parkland setting in some of Yorkshire's most outstanding and peaceful countryside, only 3.3 miles from the vibrant market town of Malton, itself consistently listed in The Times Best Places to Live guide.

Once part of the Estate of a leading English aristocrat, Sykes Lodge is set in 10 acres of parkland and bears witness to England's agricultural and social heritage.

Whilst embracing the highest standards of modern design and technological standards, the wealth of historic features in the property preserve the integrity of their richly documented past.

The accommodation is aimed particularly at multi-generational family groups, with six well-presented bedrooms to choose from to ensure a flexible sleeping arrangement to suit the needs of your group.

Here, you will find two super-king-size bedrooms with en-suites, a super-king-size bedroom and three twin bedrooms which are serviced by a further two bathrooms.

Spend sociable evenings within the open-plan living room, which boasts an extraordinary vaulted kitchen with a wide range of appliances and equipment including wine and drinks chiller and coffee-making machine, as well a formal dining table and plush sofas.

After dinner, retire to the sitting room where a woodburning stove and TV awaits you, or spend a moment or two within the library which provides a wealth of visitor and historical information and a variety of fiction and non-fiction books for you and your loved ones to enjoy.

Continuing to impress, wherever possible, particular attention has been paid to access for less-able guests, with the provision of wide doorways and easy exterior thresholds, to the wheelchair-friendly courtyard surfaces and interior flooring.

To the outside, look forward to exploring the ample seating areas, with a BBQ for rustling up some summer treats before you dip into a bubbling commercial grade Jacuzzi Spa located within the courtyard.

A short car journey will bring you to Malton, which is a superb destination hub for niche shopping and particularly as a showcase for local produce, ensuring that there's no better place to enjoy a choice of high quality cuisine from country pubs to the best of independent restaurants.

Malton also boasts its own cinema, golf course and mainline railway station with direct links to York, Scarborough and Leeds.

For the nostalgic traveller, hop on the North Yorkshire Moors Steam Railway at the nearby town of Pickering, promising a fabulous way to experience the unsurpassed Yorkshire landscape to the coast.

Sykes Lodge is an outstanding base for a family gathering to this part of Yorkshire.
