Description

Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is relax. Nothing more clearly demonstrates this mantra than time spent in this 19th century stone steading located on a 60 acre working farm in the Central Scottish Highlands. Newly renovated in 2018 this luxury five bedroom farmhouse has been designed with consideration for the less able.

The owners, James & Ailsa, wanted to ensure it would be accessible to all and designed their holiday home to be wheelchair friendly throughout which included, amongst other things, building a glass fronted lift providing full access to all upstairs bedrooms. As a physiotherapist, Ailsa, felt there was a lack of accommodation for wheelchair users that had a 'luxury' feel to the rooms modifed for their use. This is why she made sure every rooms in the house felt spacious and luxurious.

Within a half hour’s drive of Perth and fifteen minutes from Crieff, this well-appointed holiday home is very centrally located, making it a fantastic weekend getaway for the whole family, no matter the occasion.

Whilst the farmhouse can accommodate a maximum of 10 guests, there are also a number of cottages on site which if booked all together could take a group of up to 32.  If you wish to book out the entire complex it's advisable to consider doing so 18 months in advance as the cottages let independently and are very popular.

  • Reception Rooms
The owners have maximised space and accessibility downstairs by creating a contemporary open plan space for the kitchen, dining and entertainment areas. A double-sided woodburner provides the illusion of a divide, keeping the whole space warm and cosy in the cooler months. A glass fronted lift provides wheelchair users with access to the four upstairs bedrooms.

Off  the main open plan section is a wide corridor with large glass fronted lift and staircase on your right.  Turn left and you'll find yourself in the downstairs super-king bedroom with ensuite bathroom and double French style doors leading out onto a private enclosed sunny patio.  Turn right and you'll find a good sized utility room (perfect spot to put the dogs to bed for the night) and a downstairs w.c.

A door from the utility room can take you outside to an internal courtyard with ramp access.  This is a communcal area between the four cottages with paved walkways leading up to an afternoon sun-trap.

    Kitchen & Dining
The kitchen is well equipped and designed with height adjustable induction hob and sinks at two levels. It's fitted out with all the mod cons and comes with an oven, microwave, American style fridge freezer with water and ice dispenser and dishwasher. The monastery kitchen table seats 10 comfortably and on warmer days doors from the kitchen open out onto a south facing patio with views over the Strathearn Valley.

The welcome hamper provided on your arrival is produced with everything needed for your first night. Ailsa and James have made sure they’re stocked with all sorts of locally sourced goodies, and also include items like milk, butter, Nespresso capsules, tea and sugar so you can make yourself a hot drink without having to unpack the car first. You’ll also be supplied with fresh farm eggs, bread, a cake or sweet treat, marmalade & jam, chutney and 100ml of summer harvest rapeseed oil.

    Don’t want to cook?
That’s fine, the owners offer a seasonal farm kitchen menu where meals can be cooked for you. Prices vary according to the season & choice of meal, but as a guideline a two course meal per person can range from £10 - £30. To pre-order meals, 48 hours’ notice is required and menus can be provided on request.

For the super-organised who wish to maximise their time whilst on holiday it might be helpful to know that Tesco’s provide an online delivery service. If you’d like your supermarket shop delivered in advance of your arrival please liaise with the owner in advance.

  • This property can accommodate up to 10 guests in 5 bedrooms, all with en-suite bathrooms and/or wet rooms. 4 of the 5 bathrooms are wheelchair accessible with access to the first floor by a glass fronted lift. Bathrooms include full wet rooms to roll-in, roll-out showers.  The fifth bathroom (first floor top right) is more suited to the 'mobility impaired' than being fully wheelchair accessible. This is the room that a carer might use.

The default bedroom configuration is double beds, all of the bedrooms can be made up as twin rooms, please advise the owner if you require twin beds at least 2 weeks prior to arrival (see travel information for contact details).

    Ground Floor:
Bedroom 1: Super-King or twin Zip n’link with ensuite bathroom and roll in, roll out wet room. This room can accommodate a rolling bed & guerney

    First Floor:
Bed 2: Super-King Master Suite Zip n’link with ensuite bathroom and roll top bath
Bed 3: Super-King or twin Zip n’link with ensuite bathroom and roll in, roll out wet room
Bed 4: Super-King or twin Zip n’link with ensuite bathroom and roll in, roll out wet room
Bed 5: Super-King or twin Zip n’link with ensuite bathroom and roll in, roll out wet room
*for full accessibility detail please email the office, advising your specific requirements

Good quality linens, towels and bathrobes are provided in all bedrooms.

    Additional Accommodation
The owners let smaller cottages on the farm ranging from one to three bedrooms, so if your group size increases it may be possible to book an additional cottage as extra in conjunction with the farmhouse depending on availability.

Whilst the farmhouse can accommodate a maximum of 10 guests, the whole complex can welcome up to 32 guests.  If you wish to book out the entire complex it's advisable to consider doing so 18 months in advance as the cottages let independently and are very popular.

  • The farmhouse is located on a 60 acre working farm which means you’ll enjoy views of rare breed sheep and cattle grazing the surrounding paddocks and hills.

An enclosed garden provides guests with privacy and the other cottages are spaced well enough apart to offer each group quiet enjoyment during their time here. Outdoor furniture and a BBQ are provided in the warmer months for those al fresco moments.

A small farm-shop is open 7 days a week and will help supply the bare essentials so you really don’t have to move from your spot if you don’t want to!

There’s plenty of parking around the farmhouse and of course wheelchair access to and from the house has been well considered.

    Location & Activities

The area is steeped in history no matter which way you turn. Crieff is the nearest town and lies on the A85 road between Perth and Crainlarich. It’s become a hub for tourism with the Famous Grouse Experience providing one-hour distillery tours at the old Glenturret Distillery. Comrie Croft Mountain Bike Trails is a great spot to take the family providing purpose built trail grades from ungraded (natural) to black (severe). However if you’re not the biking sort, there are also plenty of walking trails to enjoy; 87+ kilometres of them following the Comrie paths network.

If you wanted to bag a munro whilst on holiday, there are 43 within an hour’s drive, the nearest being Ben Chonzie which is literally right on the doorstep. It’s always important to remember when planning to go hill walking to consider your safety and the safety of others. Having the right clothing and equipment is essential. For beginners we’d recommend you check out the Mountaineering Scotland Guide. It’s got some great tips on hillwalking with family.

The Auchingarrich Wildlife Centre outside Comrie would be a great day out for families with young children. As well as an indoor play barn, mini golf course and tractor circuit it also has a hatching and handling centre which is always a huge favourite. There are lots of interesting outdoor animals and the park is large enough to be of interest yet small enough for young legs to manage. We found the café was always a welcome spot to rest weary legs at the end of the day!

We stayed in the largest cottage, which is wheelchair accessible. There are 5 luxury en-suite double bedrooms, one of which is on the ground floor and has a wet room. There's also a glass lift to the 4 upper bedrooms. My 2 grandchildren loved that!
We had a lovely, relaxing family break. The wood burning stove was lovely and cosy, and the meals cooked by the owners were great. The freshly baked bread and croissants in the morning were delicious. The hens laid beautiful eggs too!
We loved seeing the pigs, sheep, hens, Highland cattle and beautiful shire horses. Winston was definitely the star! He's 19 hands high, but so gentle and friendly, snuggling into your neck and posing for photos!
I would love to go back, and would definitely recommend it.

The owners were so welcoming and helpful.
