Travelling up to Perthshire last week during the October holidays I was struck by how busy the area was. Not surprising as it is so beautiful here and there is so much to do for all the family. I stopped off at Blair Atholl to take some images of Blair Castle and when I was there I noticed that the Highland cows were being fed carrots by their owner.
With the caravan park nearby and visitors coming to see Blair Castle, this quickly drew a crowd, especially children. Animal lovers really enjoy seeing these resident Highland Cows, but there is other wildlife on the estate, including the native red squirrels, which are often seen scurrying around the grounds and trees.
Whilst Blair Atholl is a quaint village, the real reason people come here is to visit Blair Castle. Dating back to 1269, the castle has been transformed through the ages to become the fine Victorian castle in the baronial style that it is today. It is open to the public April – October each year, with many additional attractions apart from touring the castle itself. Atholl Estates have 145,000 acres of hills, woodlands and open countryside just waiting to be explored. Whether you want to set off on your own adventure on the 40 miles of walking and cycling routes or try one of the Estate activities, there is something for everyone. These include pony trekking, Land Rover safaris and tractor tours for children.
