In the old days hot oil was poured through “murder holes” when unwelcome visitors came to call at the castle. Nowadays everyone is welcome and you could even dress up as a Medieval knight whilst staying in your own castle.
This exceptional fifteenth century keep is a stone clad castle which was constructed as a wedding gift for the eldest daughter of King James II of Scotland. Within the castle building are fascinating original stonework, including Knights Templar marks.
A spiral stone staircase connects all the five floors, which includes the impressive Great Hall, which houses the kitchen, dining and living space. With one bedroom at ground level, the rest of the accommodation is on the second floor and upwards. Whilst this is an authentic medieval castle, it also has modern comforts like surround sound systems and under floor heating and is ideal for family occasions, family holidays, golfing groups and intimate weddings.
Ground floor - Entrance hallway with low ceiling entrance; library, with double bed that folds out from the wall, with en-suite bathroom, with a stone bath; utility galley kitchen in vaulted room with low ceiling; a “pit prison”; spiral stairs to floor above.
First floor - Great Hall, which has the living space, dining area and kitchen. With wood burning stove, plasma TV hidden behind tapestry, dining table for 12 and AGA within kitchen; w.c; spiral stairs.
Second floor - Double room, with king size four poster bed, with “priest hole” and wood burning stove; double room, with king size four poster bed, with “oratory” and wood burning stove; adjoining to both bedrooms – is one wet floor shower room; spiral stairs.
Third floor - Double room, with king size four poster bed, and wood burning stove; double room, with queen size four poster bed; bathroom, with roll top bath and window seat; spiral stairs.
Fourth Floor - Master suite, with super king size four poster bed, and wood burning stove, with en-suite dressing room, en-suite TV room, with TV and sofa-bed, suitable for 2 small children, with en-suite bathroom; spiral stairs.
